Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Walk away from JT and make a trade for Kadri.
I would love Marchand as well but I have a feeling he will stay in Florida.
Evander Kane is a good buy low guy right now.
Cody Glass may be a decent addition
-sign Jeannot
-sign Tanev

Knies Matthews Nylander
Kane Kadri Cowan(Marchand if possible)
McMann Glass Domi
Jeannot Laughton Tanev

That's a greasy physical forward lineup.
If we could get Marchand it would be even better.

I'd try swapping Kane and Knies.

Knies and Kadri as a 2nd. line?
Kane the dirtbag with Matthews and Nylander.

Both lines would have someone DOPS would chat with.

Oceans are great to live by / on.

Have lived both coasts, and on a destination island, that isn't part of US or Canada.

Beaches are nice, but no when you live "on the ocean" you don't go the the beach every day. LOL.
I have family property in an ocean town, definitely not an every day thing but being able to enjoy it is better than the alternative.

All that is to say - I fully believe Nylander would waive to play in Tampa.

So you must laugh when you hear the comments about "beach every day."

In 30 months on an island with world class beaches, not those Florida beaches (vacationed St. Petes twice, Key West once) which are no better than Grand Bend, and probably went to the beach 60-80 times.

Being able to go fishing on the ocean is nice though.

Friedman said Vegas is #1 on Marner's wishlist, followed by LA.

Vegas needs to clear cap, and I think they would rather move Barbashev over Karlsson. Leafs should be all over Barbashev

Hell we could take both and sort it out internally after. Karlsson is also a C which would lessen the need to drag Tavares back into the fold.

If he didn't fall down so much and look so unable to do anything against good players I might be more optimistic but for me personally I've seen enough to believe he will never be a contributor for a cup winning team.
I feel that narrative (falling down) is based more on his early years rather than his more recent play.
I’m not sure how you can draw that conclusion, seeing how it’s a tremendous confluence of factors that make any cup winning team, but it’s possible he never contributes to one.
I think there’s a very good chance that he’s better than last year, tho, and can lengthen the lineup. Probably at a better cap hit and likely improving his value.

Given our dearth of assets our cap space might be the best asset we can offer to teams trying to dump a contract they may not want. The Capitals were able to get PLD for Keumper's shorter contract. A lot of the names have been mentioned already:

Zibanejad (32) 8.5M x 5 years
Timo Meier (28) 8.8M x 6 years
Horvat (30) 8.5M x 6 years
Barzal (28) 9.15M x 6 years
Kadri (34) 7M x 4 years
Skjei (31) 7M x 6 years
Karlsson (35) 11.5M x 2 years
Couturier (32) 7.75M x 5 years
Lindholm (30) 7.75M x 6 years
Wilson (31) 6.5M x 6 years
Stephenson (31) 6.25M x 6 years

We can send Domi or Jarnkrok's smaller cap hits the other way.

Give me Meier, Kadri, and/or Wilson please.

Highly doubt any of those guys are available though.

This is actually a good situation to really see what you got

Shitty ufa market so dont go stupid with a contract that you are settling for

Get some under market grit and compete players

Go into the season with the expectation of seeing what you can fight for in ranking

Play some kids

Dont settle for something just cause.. let everyone blow their cap space

PLD was 25/26 years old when the trade happened and you just listed a bunch of guys over 30 as potential similar options... the 2 guys under 30 would be expensive to acquire even if they are available.

Adding a potential boat anchor contract is extremely risky and not a good use of capspace. Only way we get better as a team is by efficiently using our capspace, not by acquiring players not worth their capspace. Washington took that risk because they weren't in a contending window and the gamble paid off... but thats easier said than done.

I honestly believe there's currently 8+ 2026 UFAs that would be great adds and 4 players that would drastically improve our contention window so I think it's worth overspending on 1 year UFA deals (like Bertuzzi and Domi in 2023/24) this year to field a competitive team and then hope that multiple UFAs from the 2026 crop actually hit free agency (McDavid, Makar, Eichel, Kaprizov, Kempe, Kyle Connor, Andersson, and Tuch would all be great adds).

Cale Makar isn’t a UFA until the summer of 2027.

You can say the same thing for Rielly.

Also this "Reilly wont wave" is hilarious because none of us knows shit. Players waive all the time. Its extremely common for players to waive and accept a trade
Sure because of all the recent examples of guys waiving to leave Toronto over the last 20 years, we haven't ******* had one

In fact our guys do everything they can so we can't move them, Marner and Kadri ring a bell?
