Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If we don't sign Tavares we need to get 2 centers

Tough ask since most of them re-signed. Who's even left besides Bennet who is definitely staying in Florida?
Granlund and Dvorak basically lol. I think we’re going to need to explore the trade market. Sillinger would be a good target IMO. My dream would be McLeod.

I wonder what is going on there. They now have all 12 forwards locked in, 5/6 D and both G's. Their only hole is at 1RD and they have 25M in cap space. I thought for sure Ehlers was signing there, and he still might, but now they have an excess of bottom 6 forwards making decent money.
Would/should someone take a chance on Kotkaniemi?

A lot has been talked about Florida reclamation guys like Bennett, Reinhart, and now Jones, who were high picks.

I would take Jankowski off their hands. Would allow Laughton to slide to the LW and have Jankowski center the 4th line.
I proposed trading for Jankowski for 4C every single day leading up to the deadline. He was such a good target and they got him for a 5th. Crazy work by them. I doubt they move him though because their C depth is poor.

I doubt they move him at this point. They have so much cap space they can play him at 4C or 4LW if they bring in a 2C.
Yes, but if they or anyone wants to get value out of his nearly $5m contract, he's got to play higher in the lineup.

They are also one of the teams that should be looking at a goalie as well.

I don't get why they re-signed Andersen.

Do they move Kochetkov?

If I were to predict I'd say they make a play for Severson, Mittelstadt and Gibson and sign Ehlers. They also trade Svechnikov for Lafreniere.

Granlund is intriguing because I just don't see how Dallas brings him back unless it's a huge discount.

He can also play wing if needed, which I like. It leaves us flexible next offseason as well, assuming it's a 3-4 year deal

We didn't. Treliving did.

There wasn't one person on this board who said "the Leafs should trade a 1st+top 5 prospect for Laughton".

I hated that trade the moment it was made. Then to make it worse Marchand goes to Florida for a 2nd. Laughton couldn’t even lace Marchand’s skates

The real winner is Briere who fleeced Tre big time

Just to right a wrong I would trade Laughton at the deadline for as much as possible. I’d give him time with the top guys to inflate his numbers.

How hilarious would it be for JT to say how he wants to play for the Leafs all the way up to July 1st and then sign somewhere else? Exactly what he did with the Islanders.
Considering half the people don’t want him back anyway, it wouldn’t be the same level of disgust Islander fans went through.
A bigger slap in the face would be Marner signing with Carolina if he refused a trade for Rantanen.

I don't think I can respect anyone who doesn't get why Marner would want to refuse a trade (his wife was going to give birth any day). You're just a shit human if you get mad about a guy wanting to be there for the birth of their firstborn.

But it was still management that asked him to waive not the fans no?
I’m sure if Tre had come out and said we aren’t going to trade him at this time for the reasons of: 1. The birth of his first child, 2. We want him for the playoffs, most would have understood. But Tre asked him to waive, no?

Interesting.

I think Gibson is the one Edmonton will go for, but it's plausible. But I'm sure what the last trade does for them, TBH.
Svechnikov is a glass tiger analytically. Lareniere's advanced numbers are very strong. I can see them buying low on Lafreniere and I can see Drury jumping on Svech. It would be such a Carolina move.

Also russian's prefer playing on their off side. NYR need RW, Carolina are loaded at RW with Blake, Stankoven, Jarvis playing 1-3RW. Lafreniere is a natural LW who has been forced by Panarin and Kreider to play RW in New York.

I don't get what you're getting at here. Fans are pissed he didn't waive. That's what I'm talking about.

Yes, Tre asked him to waive. Not sure what that has to do with fans frothing at the mouth and issuing death threats over it.

My point is management put the idea of Marner refusing to waive for Rantanen. They should have left it alone if all the things you said in your first post about family, baby and moving were important at that time.
If I was GM I would have asked him to waive at the start of the year and then left it alone.

Management has a job to do. I don't fault them for trying. They had the right to ask and Marner had the right to say no.

Yes he gave him the choice and probably didn't expect him to go. Treliving wouldn't make the decision for him.
This is such a nothing thing, rivals the not being announced to the 1st 6 for Team Canada

Hey, looks logical.

But I wonder now that Krieder is gone, it could open up more of an opportunity for him on that side now.

Assuming Marchand is coming:

To PHI: Cowan, Woll
To TOR: Tippett, Hathaway

To CGY: Benoit
To TOR: Pospisil

To COL: Laughton
To TOR: Coyle

To BOS: Holmberg, 2026 3rd
To TOR: Kastelic

All of Robertson, Jarnkrok, Kampf moved.

UFA:
Marchand 6Mx4
Perbix 2.75Mx4
Vladar 1.5Mx2
Tavares 4.5Mx6

RFA:
Knies 6.5Mx3

Knies-Matthews-Domi (recreation of Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi)
Marchand-Coyle-Nylander (recreation of Marchand-Coyle-Pastrnak)
McMann-Tavares-Tippett (Tavares gets 2 of the fastest wingers in the league)
Pospisil-Kastelic-Hathaway (hits, fights, speed, analytics darlings)

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-Perbix
Myers

Stolarz
Vladar

Cap hit: 95.3M

For the record I hate that Marchand contract but I'm accepting fate. If he comes in at 8Mx3 I would trade Domi, move Tippett to 1RW and sign Raddysh for 3RW.
