There is plenty to do. Signing your key free agents is huge. Recent reports of them being far apart is our latest. Leafs also need to shed and dump players, or at least they should. Trades can happen at anytime.

There is time for sure so we will see how it shapes up. But the next 2 weeks are crucial and it's off to a sleepy start.
Knies negotiation isn't a rush, so not a big deal there -- everyone has said the right things regarding that. Tavares shouldn't be brought back on a market deal. Doesn't make sense to bring him back unless he's giving us a discount.

I don't think players like Reaves/Kampf/Jarnkork etc or whoever they want to dump is going to happen until after July 1st when they get paid their bonuses for the year. Only been a handful of trades league wide, 1 being Kreider who has all the say, other being Marchment.

I just think Toronto and Treliving are going to build the team in FA. But we should get some Leafs related stuff in the next 2 weeks which is nice.

I wouldn’t give JT a penny more than 5.5 million per. If he wants more, I’m perfectly fine letting him walk as well.

Maybe it's because i'm delusional but I've started talking myself into Evander Kane.

He is an absolute wild card, but he's productive and it's technically a contract year for him and it will be his last chance to get any significant money in the NHL and we know how much that guy loves money!
To add to this thought. Marchand kinda seems like this years Tanev for Brad. Where he will get him at all costs. If you can get Kane. Kane/Knies/Marchand makes for a pretty interesting winger combination.

It's a rush to know what you can and can't do. There are also risks of offer sheets. It's hugely important to get it done ASAP.

If Treliving can't get his roster shaped up entering free agency, he's in a world of hurt and he will be keeping the same roster minus Marner and maybe even JT.

Berube connection here but what about Brandon Saad if they can get him under 3 million for a short term show me deal. Toronto is a great place for vets to showcase their talents to springboard into a larger contract after their stint in Toronto

Saad on the 3rd line would be decent.

Punt Jarnkror at 2.1 and Kampf at 2.4 then Saad takes 2.4 kampf money and is better value on the current roster

Pushes Bobby Mac to the 4th line. Still need a better 2lw

I mean, Treliving has a ball park idea what it's going to take to resign Knies, that goes into his decision making in everything when it comes to the cap. If he get's offer sheeted, that's solely on Knies, he's got to accept it first to get offer sheeted.

Toronto has really 1 player they need to resign before July 1st and that's Tavares, if not then oh well. Other then that, the roster is already shaped up before free agency. We will see what the draft brings us next Friday.

Yeah. Realistically Brad should have a Knies extension, a decision on Tavares made before FA.

I understand not getting rid of Jarnkrok/Kampf because they may have more value after bonuses have been paid or FAs have been signed.

I think Boeser could find his game here again. He’s someone who can get to the right spots, shoot first mentality, and has a sneaky physical streak (anyone who watched his playoffs run with the Nucks know this). It’s a matter of making sure he’s engaged - alongside Matthews on a potential cup contender, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be.

Knies-Matthews-Boeser could be a solid top line. All 3 can pot 30G+, nice change from pass only Marner. Right handed shot as well

I’m really worried about this potential Marchand contract.
I hope they go down the route of signing bonuses, given he's over 35.

If the AVV is only, say, $7m, but with very achievable bonuses that get him to around 9, they can kick the overages down the road as the cap increases.

I've just assumed with the lack of rumours he would be signing with the Wild. But I wonder if having Matthews + Knies could sway him. He did seem interested in staying in Vancouver.

Robinson re-signs in Carolina. 1.7 million per, pretty solid deal again.
I wonder what is going on there. They now have all 12 forwards locked in, 5/6 D and both G's. Their only hole is at 1RD and they have 25M in cap space. I thought for sure Ehlers was signing there, and he still might, but now they have an excess of bottom 6 forwards making decent money.

I think Knies extension is important because it can avoid offer sheet and also allow Brad to know what he has left to work with.

Tavares is different. I think Brad can give Tavares the Stamkos treatment and give him a final offer and let him see what is out there and he doesnt like it come back. For me the Duchene deal is the barometer. I would come up slightly to offset taxes but I think it is in the 4 years x $5.5 million range. If Tavares REALLY wanted to retire a Leaf I would do 6 years at $4 million which would give Tavares $1 million at age 39 and 40 and probably reasonable.

Tavares can probably get more money somewhere else so it really comes down to how badly he wants to stay in Toronto. He may not like the teams offering him the money and he may not want to uproot his wife and kids.

If I was a betting man I would bet Tavares is willing to take a 6 year deal in the $4-5 million range and retire a leaf. I didnt like him as a captain and I dont think he is the answer to our problems but I think he is a good guy and genuinely did what he can for the Leafs. Matthews, Marner, and Nylander in contrast I find pretty douchey. I dont clump Tavares (and Rielly) in with them in that regard.

I would take Jankowski off their hands. Would allow Laughton to slide to the LW and have Jankowski center the 4th line.

If we don't sign Tavares we need to get 2 centers

Tough ask since most of them re-signed. Who's even left besides Bennet who is definitely staying in Florida?

Granlund? He might have chemistry with Nylander, I never found JT-88 did have chemistry, just 2 good players playing together.
