Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Anyone get the feeling that nobody here really has faith in Tre pulling off anything special?
There are very limited options and the amount of cap space we have scares me a bit as we have the opportunity to do something mega dumb.

That being said I do have some faith as most have his moves have been relatively good so far.

I think he's been dealt a bit of a difficult hand, some of it is courtesy of Dubas and some of it is an error like trading a 1st like Laughton.

A lot of us on here can theorize about options or what to do with the roster but it's completely different for Tree I imagine. He hears about guys that might be available via trade etc, probably a few where we'd say on these message boards "No way X is available"

I personally have kind of mentally decided to judge the roster around July 10th, trades and signings etc are most likely sorted out by then for the most part.

Apparently Knies and the leafs are far apart with the contract... unfortunately every single player is going to keep doing this to us until we completely reset and get rid of all the core players. The team needs a complete overhaul from ownership to management to players.

He doesn't have arbitration rights so we can negotiate him hard and tell him that "This is the offer - let us know when you're ready to sign it" - he can sit otherwise.

I think some team is going to give Knies an offer sheet comes July 1st.

Knies needs to stop playing tennis with Matthews because its rubbing off on him

He's not a #1 D. He has too many flaws to be a #1D. There are like 10 #1 D in the league
We're talking about a 25 year old that was 8th in Norris voting last year.

If we're going by your arbitrary claim that there are 10 #1D in the league than I agree he isn't a top 10D today. I do fully believe he is a top 20D in the league though.

He's probably closer to 10 than he is 20 tbh.

Dobson asking for 10-11m scares the shit out of me, maybe it's because he doesn't want to be in Long Island. But if I could get it down to the 9-10 range. I'd feel comfortable doing Knies for him.

However Dobson is one of my favourite players in hockey.

It’s not the expectation that 4 forwards score all the goals, it’s that when 4 forwards take up more than half the cap it leaves little money left to improve the rest of the team. This is exemplified every spring when the high priced talent disappears. The Leafs don’t need shiny tempermental sports cars, they need heavy duty work trucks like Knies, Florida keeps showing this is the template for success………
Another excuse for players that aren't the core4. Everyone needs to step up in the playoffs -- McMann 20g in regular season, Laughton 15g, Lortenz 8g, Holmberg 7g, I'd expect through 2 rounds, just one of them can score a goal.

FLA plays a simple game, puck in deep, forecheck, limit teams time and space, rinse and repeat. FLA 3rd line was the difference maker in most series.

I like how you changed your tune from him not being good enough to help and now he's too good for Tampa to let go.

I think Tampa can get themselves in a spot where they can't match 2.34M.
I never changed anything, i said 2,34 M will not be good enough to get him with an offer sheet...

2,34 M in Toronto is what 1,8 or 1,9M in Florida?

Toronto benefits when teams like Utah offer huge contracts to guys like Ekblad or Bennett. Get them out of the east

Sign Marchand just because he’s been our daddy long enough. He will be a fan favourite here

Tre has given no impression that he he’s not in on everything.

He locked up Matthews
He signed for Tanev’s rights
He was in on Markstrom
He was in on Rantanen
He acquired Carlo and Laughton

He will have a seat at the table wherever there is any opportunity.

Apart from signing any of our own free agents such as Tavares/Knies there's not much to do right now. And quite frankly, unless Tavares is taking less money, there's no point in resigning him for market value.

People are just impatient. He's going to build a majority of the team in FA.. I would have bet though Marchment was going to be someone he traded for, but I guess he has different targets in mind.

Resigning Matthews isn't really something impressive. He couldn't even get him to sign for 8 years.

Being in on players and losing is like taking pride in taking the cup champs to 7games and losing. It's cool but if you don't get it done, it means nothing.

The offseason just started but the busy time is now and the next 2 weeks. He has to get busy and get top priorities done. So far more of the same.... Nothing

Not sure why we were trying to get Toews. He was done 3 years ago. Feel good story but there's nothing in him left

I am also very ok not going after Marchment. Slow and lethargic. Doesn't use his size enough. Glorified Bobby McMann

There is plenty to do. Signing your key free agents is huge. Recent reports of them being far apart is our latest. Leafs also need to shed and dump players, or at least they should. Trades can happen at anytime.

There is time for sure so we will see how it shapes up. But the next 2 weeks are crucial and it's off to a sleepy start.

I mean I guess some people want the DNA change, anyone find it slightly concerning there's been no Tavares announcement?

I saw someone compare it to the Stamkos situation of last year, I wonder if it's getting to that point now.
How hilarious would it be for JT to say how he wants to play for the Leafs all the way up to July 1st and then sign somewhere else? Exactly what he did with the Islanders.
