Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I think they might handshake it for now while they work out other things like Dumba just because it would be smart to cover their bases in case an offer sheet comes through for Bourque.
I'm pretty sure I saw someone say during the playoffs that Benn basically said "go figure out the cap situation, sign others and then come back to me"

Nthat is the Tavares template but got to factor in on tax state so it would be $5 million. If JT got the same contract in Toronto the difference in taxes would be 2.9 million.

Didn't he win his case with the CRA? If that's a precedent-setting decision, then Toronto can load every player with signing bonuses, which would make our taxes lower than Florida, right?

Both. Pagnotta said the Marchment is a player the leafs will take a look at. And now with Duchene signed, and Jamie Benn close to re-signing....Marchment is out the door soon.

Robertson for Marchment 1 for 1 makes sense. Saves the Stars some salary and also gets back a young player with upside. And his brother happens to play on the team
but why does this trade make sense for the leafs other than actively making them slower and worse in the playoffs?

They get bigger and harder to play against.

It also does not make them worse in the playoffs. Just because his production drops of slightly in the playoffs doesn't mean that isn't better than what he's replacing here.

Re-sign Tavares

Re-sign Lorentz

Re-sign Holmberg

Extend Knies

Trade for Zibandejab

Trade for Bertuzzi

Sign Mangiapane

Sign Tanev

Sign Brazeau

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Tavares-Zibandejad-Nylander
Bertuzzi-Laughton-Mangiapane
Lorentz-Tanev-Brazeau
Holmberg

Zibanejad isn't moving from the Rangers.

Isn’t it just for the first year? I thought the argument was that he was a US tax resident on July 1 when he got the first bonus. The other 6 are taxed as usual no?

he's not very hard to play against... I watched stars fans bemoan how easy he was to play against. this to me seems like leaf fans thinking someone is something they are not because they never watch them. he had 1 f***ing goal in the playoffs in 18 games lol

He had 22 goals and 47 points. Compared to the guy who was scratched most of the playoffs. It's a no brainer
he had 1 goal in 18 playoff games Robertson matched his goal scoring in 15 less games.

he was absolutely trash in the playoffs, he cant skate why are we trying to get slower didnt we get enough of being skated into dust by a fast florida team?

You think FLA speed was the reason why Toronto lost? Toronto lost due to FLA aggressive strong forecheck. No time and space to make a play. Not because FLA was "fast"..

You can be a fast team, but if you can't forecheck or are heavy on pucks, it doesn't matter.

Is Towes signs in Colorado, I see the leafs/avs as ideal trade partners.

Either Charlie Coyle or Ross Colton
If I were a team, I wouldn't be making space for Toews. That's PTO and then league minimum at best until it's confirmed he can actually still play hockey.

I hope Tre is talking to SJ, Wennberg could be a C option to play with Willie, Ferraro as more of a puck moving D and Kostin as a young winger with upside for the bottom 6. All could be more affordable options, and with their cap space maybe the likes of Rielly, McCabe, Jarnkrok etc would be of use to them

They can do that anyway, and they have, albeit not very successfully...

Matthews' contract is and was structured the same, the issue with JT was that the first Leaf signing bonus was deposited in his NY account, and the assumption by the CRA was that he likely spent enough time in Ontario (given he's also a resident prior to signing here) that year that it should been taxed here at our rates rather than New York.

My opinion on those types of contracts is very mixed, though.

Yes, they can make contract offers more competitive, but in terms of the spirit of them, I don't like it on two fronts. First, you end up giving them way too much money too soon, and secondly, they are still mainly structured to avoid taxation, which, on a greater level than hockey, irks me.

Benoit for Pospisil
McMann or Laughton for Coyle
Woll+Cowan for Tippett+Hathaway
Holmberg+4th for Kastelic
Robertson+Benning+3rd for Eberle
Jarnkrok to PIT for future considerations
Kampf to LAK for future considerations

UFA:
Perbix 2.75Mx4
Vladar 1.5Mx2
Tavares 4.5Mx6

RFA:
Knies 6.5Mx3

Domi-Matthews-Tippett
Knies-Coyle-Nylander
Laughton/McMann-Tavares-Eberle
Pospisil-Kastelic-Hathaway

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-Perbix

Stolarz
Vladar

Cap space: 2.25-2.4M

That 4th line would be so much fun. All 3 players were in the top 10 in hits/60 this season.
