Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

People are actually in favour of giving Marchand 3-4 years at +$8M?
Fans are desperate, giving out long term contracts & money to mediocre players to plug holes because you have cap space is a good way to make you an average team, fast.

In saying that though, there's going to be a fine line.. On the Leaf Report though, Mirtle seems to think contracts are going to be nutty with the rising cap to 113m in 2027-2028. The new 7m player is going to be 9m-9.5m in 2 years. The league is sort of going through a change in player valuation for $.

I hate how bad the UFA center options are. If we cant get Bennett, we pretty much need Tavares to be 2C again next year. And there aren't really many good 3C/4C options either. There are some interesting trade options but I dont think we have the assets to get anyone good.

Matthews
Tavares
Laughton
XXX

Is that going to get us past the 2nd round?

An all geriatrics team of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Max Pacioretty, Brad Marchand and Corey Perry would and Jamie Benn would be pretty funny. Imagine Marchand would make a lot of money, and Kane would still make good coin, but that would be funniest lower nine ever.

I like Bozak because he played to his ability.

I do blame him for being injured in game 7 though ... all they needed was someone who could win a fricken face-off.
also would've been nice if Freddy didn't diarrhea all over himself in game 7s lol

So I guess everyone is wired differently so regardless of what one person says, someone else will be different but...you listen to radio shows etc like Overdrive and a lot of other professional athletes have just kind of said "The team didn't want me, so I didn't want to stay"

So maybe Rielly digs in but if Tree came up to him and just said the fit isn't there for us and you anymore, we want to move on from you, where can we send you? Sometimes that is all that it takes.

I know NYR has just been used in this thread but we've seen other times like Philly where they've taken the gloves off too or told guys they wanna move on.
That's a likely outcome - people move on when they aren't wanted. Even if that's not the outcome, mgmt should be able to out maneuver the middle aged middle class asset.

Certainly not bulletproof though.

It requires significant factors for an organization to make such a move, but I think most players realize that an NMC is very valuable, and contractual, but in practice, not infallible.

That depends on the rest of the team. We had those centers and Domi and pushed it pretty good. I think Treliving can do more than just that via trades, but it will take some creative deals and probably some good scouting or whatever.

so the 2 time cup winning cancer survivor who was an integral part to the penguins championships wasnt a hard worker? ok
He's absolutely not a hard worker lmao. Have you heard about the stories of him in the weight room? Dudes an athletic freak but could not care less about workouts

so are we talking about hard workers on the ice or in the gym? because people around the team attest to tavares, Nylander and matthews work in the gym.

Ideally, they get the best center available.

There is nothing wrong with getting the best available player/forward regardless of position.

Talent can adjust.

If those guys sign plus JT resigning.
It will be like this
Knies-AM-Benn
Marchand-JT-Kane
McMann-Domi-Willie
Laughton-Toews -Perry
Max and Lorentz

speed might be a problem, lol

Would love to see it but damn if that isn’t a lineup that’s going to take 7 hooking/tripping/interference calls a night without any penalty killers.

What are the cap increases in the next few years?

I read a post saying that it will be something like 113 million in two years and three years from now it will hit 120M. Is this accurate?

Would definitely change the perception of some of these contracts (cap hit number wise) we're about to see in Free agency.

Rangers are kinda James Dolan crazy but I think there’s a middle ground where you can make hard decisions, uncomfortable conversations and turf comfortable multimillionaires when the time is right.
Don’t know who James Dolan is, but at least they identify that gheir team isn’t working and have the stones to make hard decisions…….

Or, world war three eill ramp up and ghe league could shut down, ir maybe just another virus is unleashed against the world. Nothing’s certain but death snd taxes…….

The league and the Players’ Association on Friday released the cap numbers for the next three seasons:
$95.5 million in 2025-26,
$104 million in ’26-27
$113.5 million in ’27-28.

Top 12 UFAs.

Bye Mitch (he's definitely gone).
Tavares (sign for reasonable).

What to do with the extra cap space ?
Not alot of options that would come here.
I think Marner is heading for a pay day for a GM that wants more regular season wins.

Teams that locked in their core pieces for longterm before these increases will have an advantage. Buffalo has a lot of guys locked in

Now if they get their sh*t together they can build a winning team with Dahlin, Power etc all signed for longterm

However one of their top forwards is a UFA next summer. 6’4” and has good offensive numbers. He may be the prized trade deadline add this year

Also Florida continues to show why they are the smartest team. They have their big core guys locked in for 4-5+ years at very good cap hits

Barkov
Tkachuk
Reinhart
Verhaeghe
Forsling
Jones

They are going to be a great team for many years but I expect some off years here and there as Bobrovsky is aging
