If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Ppl want Marner to walk but then sign a weaker, worse, glass version in Ehlers?!

Makes no sense.

(This team needs Marchand, and I hate saying that, but I want him now even near eight mil)
Why not? If Marner walks we get zero. Assets never recovered.
If Ehlers signs with a limited NTC, we can move the asset if it doesn’t work out.

1- I think Suter salary for next season will be higher than what you expecting, i'm not that sure he will be a cheap option.

2- i dont see him as a fit for leafs need and identity treliving and Berube try to bring in

but yeah im agree kerfoot was not the problem but doesn't mean he wqs the right guy

Did Suter bring more grit/ physical presence in front the net? no
Did he bring more offensive? no
Did he bring better defensive game ? no

Where he should be more effective

For me it's a classic " grass looking greener on the other side"
No its not - suter doesnt fit where the leafs need to go so i dont care what color the grass is

no one's going to pay the money being talked about for either Bennett or the Rat, yes they'll get significant raises and maybe term, but it's media hype that these guys are hitting the lottery with the idiotic numbers being discussed.........

People want $13.5M to walk, it just happens to be Marner :) I like Ehlers but I am a bit on the fence as well. I don't know how his injuries tie together. However 63 pts in 69 games on just 15:48 TOI with 50pt Perfetti as his primary center. How do you think he could have produced with JT and Nylander this year and 18:30 TOI? The chances he has another gear seem pretty good.

For a 37 year old player you want to pay $8mm?
For that particular one absolutely. Not 8x8 but he adds exactly what this team needs, even being older and slower and worse, he's still a difference maker, and again, in the ways this team needs. On and off the ice.

Has this team learned nothing from it's past? -- If he isn't play at a beast level, which could be at any point of the contract, then what? Did we forget about Patrick Marleau? who we had to trade a 1st to trade away?

Just because we have some cap space, doesn't mean spend it stupudly.. 8m and any term for a 37 year old is a stupid way to spend money.

That's a rather big "if", and the chances it doesn't work out for what he's about to make are huge.

We already know what Points are going to accomplish, if that's what's important nobody is better or going to get more than Marner.

I don't want him at 13+ either but replacing him with an overpaid, guaranteed to be injured and ineffective in playoffs Ehlers is going backwards.

It's not an indefinite contract, if you can get him short term, as is being discussed, it's a no brainer add. Getting stuck on 37 is narrow minded at best.

He's very clearly still there extremely effective, the chances that disappears next season or the following are pretty low, then ltir or robidas island as many others have said before.

With no draft picks and assets walking we are going to have to get creative.
What if Matthews walks in 3 years after Marner?

Ehlers is the least creative option available.

Idk what you're implying with the second sentence, if they both walk it rebuild city..

(There's an argument many Leafs fans don't want to hear for signing Marner and moving Nylander, asset and team composition wise.)

I hope Marhews foes walk in 3 years, barring him waiving for a trade were stuck with Captain Arrogant……..

That’s when we rebuild.

We did that 10 years ago. It landed us Rielly, Kadri, Nylander, Marner, and Matthews along with many other assets that we traded away. Had we built around that core better, we may have won.

Once Matthews walks, we start over and try again.

Probably a better argument for trading Matthews, who can walk in 3 seasons.

The opinion of him as a 69 goal scorer is still fresh.
I don't think there's any argument to be made for trading a 1C, who averages 45goals per season. This fanbase is very spoiled and forgets how every team wants a big 1C who plays great in his own end as well.
