If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Unlikely but it fits and definitely changes the DNA of this team IMO…

if we are comparing effort, compare it in the D-zome where McDavid is poor compared to Matthews.
'effort' will not separate you from a double team, only elite will do that.
Yes, this WAS Matthews 1st year on his new contract ...next season will be #2
why cant any player play close to McDavids level?
there is a reason he is 'generational'

McDavid has really played well defensively
He’s a UFA next summer.

Exactly. Leading up to the deadline. A great opportunity to get back some draft capital

There’s a difference between a ‘choker’ and a depth guy performing like a depth guy.

A couple goals and a physical presence I seems like a decent contribution from a 3rd liner.
I would agree with you but a slow skater who is legitimately not good in the playoffs doesnt seem like a good fit?

He's fine in the play-offs. Not great, not terrible. He's a depth player.
depth players shouldn't be on our second line thought like people are penciling him in as and also should bring value over their 4.3m contract. For example the player I'd want to take this guys role in our line up would be Lawson Crouse due to his ability to skate.

Interesting post.

Bennett res8gn in Florida ... use of the '8' for years in the contract. Tell me that wasn't accidental?

Cowan on the 3rd. line, with no experience.

Just pulling your leg!!

1-nobody know what Bennett want

2- No sure Florida will have any interest to give a 8th year with a cap hit high whrn bennett will be at 36 with his style...If they do its to reduce the cap hit and nothing else

3- If they don't resign there, Toronto no d9ubt for me are in front of his personnal list

4- I put Cowan in a 3rd, not a 1st line. It's a pretty good spot for an NHL ready prospect to step in alongside a veteran like JT, i don't know if you can really have something better for a young prospect..

Domi on the first line, is kind of one of those... if we really improve and spend big money for depth... ok, I can live with it... but that didn't happen here.

Laughton isn't a second line player. Our season will be pretty terrible if that's the case. We need someone far better there, though I agree he's best off on the wing... hopefully on the fourth line.

I can live with;

Knies Matthews xxx
xxx Bennett Nylander
McMann Tavares Cowan..

But I want different xxx's.

1-The best player are not necessairly the best teammate. Pascal Dupuis was not a 1st line player but he was bringing exactly what Crosby needed. What Nylander need is guy who will bring what he's not bring to be complementary player... work, Grit, physical play, defensive play... keep thing simple and that's exactly what laughton bring. So no alone Laughton is not a top 6 player but i can easily see him like a pretty good complementary guy to play with Nylander. You add Bennett, you got 2 player who will do the hard work and bring the puck back on Nylander stick, that's what you want especially in playoff.

2- If matthews can't play with knies and Domi, he doesn't deserve his salary. He will already play with a 8M guy( maybe more). Domi still a pretty good playmaker to play with ans his D will not hurt as much as a winger

Kreider for 2nd line LW. Marchand to be on a line with Tavares - Cowan would be ideal and nearly the perfect offseason imo for what can be done.

Knies - Matthews - Domi/Kane
Kreider - Bennett/Pageau/Karlsson - Nylander

should be our top 6 after this offseason, if not FIRE EVERYONE

Yeah, 3rd. line with a 2nd. line center, who is responsible and plays a heavier game.

I agree that Mason Marchment should not be on our second line. He'd be a good fit with Tavares on a 3rd line.

Lawson Crouse is a player I've wanted for years. He's an excellent complimentary player who can really play anywhere from line 1 to 4. I would much prefer him over Marchment.

Kreider wont be a smart add at his AAV imo

He is older, less physical and on a clear decline

His game was heavily PP reliant for his prime year goal scoring.

Knies is already in the front of the net role. Matthews and Nylander are there.

Then Rielly, Tavares, any new additions with more puck carrying and shooting skills would be a higher priority.

I'd avoid Kreider and aim for a younger player

Curious if Tre circles back to some of his older players. Andrew Mangiapane could be an interesting add the Leafs need a guy to drive offense for the third line.

This is someone you probably take a long look at. I would assume the Hawks and Ducks will be all over him though.

I'd be very interested. But not sure what the Leafs could offer. Cowan + (not sure what the + would be). I'd imagine other teams got that offer beat.

Is Laughton’s value really at its highest right now after he came to a playoff team and was determined to be a 4C and proceeded to put up no offense and got caved in defensively?

He was playing in the 3rd line and was not determined to be a 4c.

sportsnet graphics don’t determine the line up.

I feel the leafs need to get younger on D. Wonder why the rangers have him on the block? I wouldn’t classify him as a buy low candidate that other teams seems to hit on. I would imagine his value is still high.

We don’t have assets to trade for elite young players.

The UFA pool is weak this year, and with the cap rising, contracts are going to explode.

Our best bet is acquiring guys who had down seasons and bet that they can rebound.

Acquiring Kreider for almost nothing would be a genius move. He was on pace for 27 goals last season. The fact that that’s a huge down season for him says a lot.

He's also entering his 34 year season, makes 6M+ and had 8 assists in 68 games

He is a waste of cap space over a younger UFA with higher offensive potential.

The leafs still have assets of value

Woll
FLO 2nd
Robertson
Cowan
Danford
Carlo/OEL/Benoit

Leafs should be creative and see if a younger player with less risk is available.

The upside of Kreider is reduced by him not being on PP1 next year.
