If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

He's at the age where he's probably looking to start a family and him and his wife are from Toronto. There's an allure to raising your kids around their grandparents.
I imagine they are pretty entrenched in their community there.
Team is successful, seems like a pretty close group.
Players start families away from home all the time.

It could certainly happen but I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn't re-sign before the next season starts.

The team is successful because of him. It’s easy to argue that if you put him on 10 other teams throughout the league he would have won by now.

Guys, I'm going to post something. It maybe a little unrealistic but have it.

Essentially I did McMann + Holmberg for Kreider. They could probably sign holmberg for 1m< which would give them two plays for 2.4m, plus 4.1m of extra cap space for Kreider.

I did the highly talked about Robertson for Marchment.

At present I'd wager he's going to test free agency, even if he intends on extending.

I dont think there is a reason for McDavid to "test" free agency. I think he will 99% extend in Edmonton, if he did want to go somewhere else I feel like Toronto would be high on his list. I dont get the impression with him it is all about money, geography, climate, taxes, etc. If by some random chance he wants to leave Edmonton it is to go home, I dont think he needs to leave to get huge money. He is the complete opposite of what we have with the boys in Toronto currently (Matthews, Marner, Nylander)

On a different note, regarding this year, I really think Brad moves on from Tavares. I know it sounds like Tavares is willing to work with Brad to find a way to stay, but there is an opportunity to change 40% of the DNA (2/5 of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly) just by not resigning them.

I always found it odd that Tavares was so gracious about handing over the "C" to Matthews. I know publically Tavares will always be a team guy but behind close doors one would have to think it was extremely insulting. Especially since it isnt like Matthew's screams captain material. If Tavares does care, there is likely some sort of animosity in the room, if he doesn't, I am not sure we need a player who doesn't care about these types of things and is part of the dna problem.

I think there is enough of a mix of solid vets and 50-60 point players that Brad can potentially reshape the team on July 1. He has some trade pieces (Rielly, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Robertson) and some cap space to work with for once. Outside of locking up Knies, I think most of the fellas are signed.

Kreider is likely a cap dump. No need to include McMann.

Also be wary of Suter. He’s Jarnkrok 2.0.

It's probably pretty unrealistic. But you could do a couple things with this. You could just trade McMann for picks and sign Marchand to Kreiders deal.

You could keep Kampf and put Laughton on the third line. You could put Cowan on rw3 and potentially upgrade Suter or Kreider to someone else with the extra cap.

His production relative to his inability (unwillingness) to defend makes him a borderline replacement level player.

It really doesn’t.

His defensive issues are magnified when he’s forced to play out of position and out of role. He’s not a center, and he’s not a bottom 6er. He is a top-6 complimentary player.

Put him on the wing where defensive responsibilities are minimal, and put him with a goalscorer to make use of him creative playmaking.

If Kreider is a cap dump, could you turn around and use McMann + something else for Pageau?

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Kreider - Pageau - Nylander
Marchment - Tavares - Laughton/FA/Cowan?

You don't really take on any crippling contracts with Pageau/Marchment a FA at the end of the year. Kreider would have 1 year left.

We've seen the upside for 20 games at the end of 23-24.

What we saw last season was a disaster, what we saw for the first 60 games 2 seasons ago was a disaster. Forgive me for believing in the the larger sample.

I expect McDavid to re-sign this summer.
I am opposite, he has earned the right to choose where he finishes out his career. In a perfect world for Leaf fans he wins a cup or two with the Oilers then comes home to win one with the Leafs.

If that’s Bennett’s ask, I could come around to it.
7@7 is a pretty easy yes. If he wants to come home a hero, a decent deal is a good way to do it.
7@8 isn’t horrible.
Climb any higher and probably naw.

If we can find a way to fit both Kreider and Bennet in the line-up - now you're talking. Those are some tough characters who can play. Kreider is fast too.

Fill out the rest of the lineup with good bang-for-your-buck guys like Comtois, C. Brown, Steen, Raddysh, Cowan, Tanev and L. Reichel (maybe). Speedy, untapped talent, or gritty.

Leave the D and goaltending alone for now.
