If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I guess my only counter to that is that the extra $700K might be needed? Also, if the cap goes up to $104M, percentage wise it is the equivalent to $390K in 25/26 dollars.

Burying him in the AHL counts less against the cap in both year 1 and year 2 than a buyout would.

If he is bought out, its 450k on the cap both years (900k savings in year 1, 450k extra in year 2)

If he is buried is its 200k on the cap this year and 0 next year (1.15M savings in year 1, no extra in year 2)

Ah. Got it, thanks.

Thoughts on this as a start?

Knies - Matthews - xxxx
Laughton - Bennett - Nylander
Mcmann - Tavares- Domi
Xxxx Eyssimont xxxx

Eyssimont is / was an analytics darling that never really panned out with TBL. He's still a solid grinder though. I could see a decent amount of interest in him. I don't think he's a center either. He'd be the kind of forward that Carolina or Florida adds and he looks super good in that kind of setting.

DB has him as a C, elite and PP as C/W. But you're right. Didn't take very many faceoffs at all.

Expect more of the bigger names in the Toronto media group to start putting out this sentiment.

It's either sincere from Marner's camp or a negotiation tool to try to leverage other free agency offers. But we're going to be bombarded with it for the next month

I mean. The second doesn’t make sense?
Others can’t offer him until he gets to UFA.

I thought that Vegas last year or la made the most sense. Now I don’t know. I am starting to lean to him coming back.

He was emotional. I remember when I left my job I really didn’t want to. I had been there for 10 years. Fear of the unknown. Losing security and friends. Wife had friends and didn’t want to move.

I had no choice because my job didn’t have the position I wanted and trained for. I still really wavered at the end.

I get he’s frustrated. I get he’s burned out. I get he feels unfairly criticized (and he will never own up to his camps part in that)

But really. Leaving your team. Endorsements. Linemates. Signing bonuses. The 8th year. Family support and a chance at the record book.

The 7th all time scorer doesn’t get a banner. It would be so odd for him to leave. When the dust settles and the rubber meets the road I bet he stays.

I would honestly sign him and trade Willy if I had to make a change.

Get something back for Willy.

I think this might be a good time to try Tanner Jeannot as a reclamation project. UFA who has had a number of down years but would till add a lot of personality in a bottom 6 role with some scoring pedigree (not much). We wouldn't be adding him at a crazy cost like Tampa did, so he'll just be a guy.

Jeannot could go well with a Laughton, or maybe you slot him higher on a potential Bennett type personality line.

I’ve had the same thought myself. Even if he never finds that offensive game from his peak days in Nashville he’d make for a strong forechecker, a physical presence, and play the enforcer role Reaves can no longer do.

They can't officially make offers but his agent has probably been taking with teams for weeks at this point.

I honestly have no idea what's going to happen though. It definitely won't be that surprising if he extends, I'll say that much

The most I’d be willing to spend on Bennett is a contract with an AAV of $7.5 million. It’s the percentage of cap Hyman got when he signed with Edmonton for 7 years plus extra accounting for Sam’s position and his proven playoff scoring prowess. If Ferris that shit-heel agent of his wants more then forget it. Take our chances trading for an undervalued centre and/or waiting for 2026 free agency.

Hate the prick but can’t deny he’d be an upgrade at centre for us and plays the way Craig and Brad want. Need to heavily stress to him though that all the dirty shit he’s pulled over his career won’t fly here. It would be peak NHL to never suspend the guy for anything he’s done against the Leafs only to have him suspended with him on the team.

I would happily replace Lorentz with Jeannot in the lineup. Jeannot - Laughton - Holmberg would be a pretty good 4th line.

Yep. Who knows if he goes. He may. Especially if his feelings are hurt….. when you don’t chase after someone who breaks up with you so they just don’t come back.

I think he was mad the whole year and was thinking about leaving. But again just like a break up. Then you start looking at where am I going to live. I won’t see my friends. I don’t want to split custody etc.

I bet he’s going through the lists of teams.
Who am I playing with? Hertl? Danault? How are there medical staff.
Are my parents moving? What happens to my foundation?

Can LA beat Edmonton? Etc. I think it’s all fun and games to fantasize about leaving but when the reality sets in.

I think it’s already starting. I think he’s going to waver like JT. Who leaves a top franchise when you have a chance to be an all time great when they want to keep you.

7.5M would be a lot more digestible for a physical 50 point pest with playoff pedigree. He's not even a good center in terms of faceoffs or great 2-way play, hell he doesn't even PK for the Panthers. But he does hit and he does get involved. Tough to argue that he has an impact in an area the Leafs need to get better at but it's a very risky one to get done.

I'd be shocked if he left them for that cap hit but maybe they have a set number and would prefer to replace him with a cheaper alternative moving forward, and then promote players like Lundell for more minutes.

Why are they bridging Knies if they are walking away from Marner's $11M? How much are you thinking Bennett could get?
Bennett gets over 8 for sure, maybe 9. That would leave too little money left to sign 2 top-9 wingers and 2 3rd line wingers.

I'd much rather focus on a long-term deal for Knies and have someone that can be on a potential great deal towards the 2nd half of that deal. I don't want another top dollar deal in 3 years if he explodes into a 40 goal power forward, which is pretty likely. Maybe that means they don't sign a ~2-3M player this off-season but so be it.

Adding Sam Bennett wouldn't just be a one man plug and play strategy. I think you would have to add a couple of running mates for him, like a Brad Marchand maybe, like a Tanner Jeannot maybe and build a little club pack of assholes, give Scott Laughton different marching orders and top 6 time. Maybe Max Domi is more empowered to play a snot based game, maybe Matthew Knies is drawn into the battle more. The whole emotional temperature and physicality of the team will have to change a lot.
