Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Lol we dont have picks until the sun swallows the Earth
Thanks for saying this.

I see so many pie in the sky wishful thinking names on this list and I have no idea how any of these things happen.

We have literally no picks left and our prospect pool is shallow.

Are other teams really going to give us much for our cast-offs?

If the Marner to Vegas stuff had legs, that is an opportunity to get some value, and I would be hoping for Korczak to be a part of it for us.

I don’t see why I’m not hearing more about Ryan Donato for us.

He is a legitimate 2C option for us and is a UFA who could likely be had for similar to Domi’s contract.

Yes he had a banner year last season on a bad Buffalo team, but he is very much a gamble I would take over some of the reclamation projects being bounced around here.

My addition wish list:

Boeser
Mangiapane
Donato
Connor Brown
Korczak

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Mangiapane-Donato-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Boeser
Lorentz-Laughton-Brown

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-Korczak
Benoit

Still a lot of pie in the sky on my part, but in the absence of trading pieces and keeping what we already have, I can at least see how they could be added.

……. Or maybe I just need to go back to sleep.

Cheers.

I’m really interested in the speed data.
Where are you finding it?
Some players that interest me specifically:
Internally:
Max Domi
Pontus Holmberg
Externally/
Mangiapane
Suter
Gaudette
Kunin

I’d also be curious to hear data for Easton Cowan and Jacob Quillan? Though I don’t imagine that’s readily available.
NHL Edge has that data.

I will say that while the Leafs don't have 1st round picks and they don't have many valued prospects, it's not the only way to make a trade and it's not the only way to add. Does it help? Sure of course. It makes things a lot easier but it's definitely not impossible to make additions by using 2nds or later draft picks or even going through and making changes without those things. Leafs added a bunch of players for those assets and they are still here.

I hate using the Caps as an example but they made 4 off-season trades last year and they didn't use a single 1st round pick. They really just need Treliving to get off his ass and get creative. Treliving put himself in this situation and he needs to figure out how to push it forward.

With the KHL and most European leagues now over, and the World Championships almost over, I wonder if we start hearing about some players making the move to the AHL/NHL?

Atro Leppänen, Danil Aimurzin, Grigori Kuzmin and Maxim Shabanov all had some very good numbers in their respective leagues. The latter 3 are all under 24 years old, so potential there and I've seen a lot of interest for Shabanov. Leppanen is 26 but had a huge season. Late bloomer with great skating.

Oskar Steen is 27 years old but also had a pretty big year in the SHL after years in the Bruins org.

Fine signing Oskar Steen as long as we don't trade him for Stempniak

Rumours of Shanahan moving on to NYI..
&
He might take Marner with him to long Island.

How about Leafs offer Matthews to the NYI in trade to keep Auston and Mitch together?

Auston Matthews to NYI for Matty Barzal C ($9.15 mil ) + Noah Dobson Dman (RFA) + 1st (which is 1st overall)

Former #1 overall for a future #1OA.

The additions of Dobson and also future stud #1 Schaefer are a huge upgrade to the defense.

Would NYI's make this trade and would Leaf fans like this trade?

With Mathieu Darche hired there, apparently Shanahan and Islanders are not going to link up. They've only talked but sounds like it's not gonna happen.

I'm going to be a Debbie Downer with the Byfield trade ideas. If we ever trade Matthews, we 100% need a 1C back. 1Cs are near impossible to find! The 1C can be an up-and-comer with some risk attached (e.g., Carlsson) or a slightly worse 1C than Matthews but with other stuff attached (like Mess mentioned, Barzal and Dobson).

For those reasons, I'm out.

With so much cap space, our best bet to acquire the best players is to bring in contracts from teams that are looking to make cap room.

Dallas needs to make room and Mason Marchment likely gets moved out.

If Vegas wants to sign a big name, they’ll have to make room, and William Karlsson is the likely mover.

Utah may want to use Lawson Crouse’s money on a more dynamic player.

I think both Marchment and Crouse would be good targets. At 4.5 and 4.3, they seem overpaid, but I think they’ll look pretty fair after this UFA crop.

If the Marner to Vegas stuff had legs, that is an opportunity to get some value, and I would be hoping for Korczak to be a part of it for us.

To bring in Marner, they’d need shed salary, and that means they have to keep their cheap players. Korczak needs to stay so they can let more expensive guys walk.

Soft. Small. Bad defensively. Terrible on faceoffs. That isn’t a legitimate 2C.

I like all those moves but I struggle to see why Utah would ever do that, unless of course they were able to sign huge UFAs like Bennett and like maybe Boeser or something.

I would love to buy low on Crouse though. His TOI/G was slashed by 3 minutes and only had 12 goals and 18 points. This is how you get good players on the cheap. It's a risk but I think he'd be very good. McBain makes a lot of sense and I'm surprised the Leafs didn't go harder after him when he was available years ago... but Utah need more centers so I don't see why they'd pawn him off like that.

Utah doesn’t seem to like McBain. They keep jamming him on the 4th line. Cooley and Hayton are their 1/2 at center. Then they used Stenlund, Kerfoot, and Bjugstad just as much as McBain after that.

It's a team that should and probably will be very aggressive this summer. So maybe they flip a few players for cheaper depth and target expensive more prominent players. We'll see. I still think they can do better than what's given here. Obviously the Leafs should be entirely all over either or both if they are available. Toronto players that are a bit younger and a lot cheaper than any alternative.

If McBain and/or Crouse are traded this summer and it wasn't for a huge deal, I'll be pretty pissed off to say the least.
