Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios needs to prioritize acquiring a right-shot defenceman

The Senators will likely pursue another right-shot defenceman after Postmedia reported that veteran blueliner Nick Jensen had surgery on Monday on a lower-body injury.

League executives also suggested the Senators could try to see if they can find a fit with the Philadelphia Flyers for right-shot blueliner Rasmus Ristolainen, who has two years left at $5.1 million per season.

But it should be noted that the Toronto Maple Leafs tried desperately to get Ristolainen at the trade deadline in March, and were rebuffed.

People in media have actually went as far as saying both Knies and Bennett could get up to 10 million or ask for it. Both 20-30 goal guys who get 40-50 points. Both good players who every team needs to help you win but this is getting crazy even with the cap going up. I think I'd give both guys 7 mil maybe 7.5 max. Kadri got 8% of the cap on his deal as a FA which would be 7.6 mil next season and he produced around the same as they did even a little better but also had a 87 point season which they haven't done. This is getting crazy now. Bennett will probably sign in back in Florida for like 6.5 or something and Marchand will return as well while Ekblad walks.

A few Fourth line options, discussed... happy to add players for us to look at.

Brazeau - ~ 20 points, Hits 140, well below average speed, BIG, UFA
Jeannott - 14 points, hits 200+, slightly above average speed Good size, physical, will fight, UFA
Sherwood - 40 points in 14:53 ice time, 462 hits!!!!!!! slight above average speed, Average size 6' 195lbs (trade)
Krebs - 28 points in 13:56, 136 hits.... only true C option listed, 6' 186lbs 67% skater, so brings speed to the table (trade... even Robertson might work)
Laughton - below average speed, 31 points, 178 hits. Better Winger than C... didn't gel with anyone here yet.
McBain - average skating speed, 27 points, 291, C.. could be a 3C... Big, physical, can fight... Probably not available... would be a trade.
Brandon Tanev - 22 points, 168 hits, winger, 88th percentile speed... so it would make us faster. 6' 190lbs.

I’m really interested in the speed data.

You can't blame the coaches for Rielly, sorry. It's been how many years that we've tried to find him a partner? We literally got Tanev for him who's top 5 in next defensive defensemen in the game, and even Tanev couldn't save Rielly. He's had 1 great year and has been on the down swing the last 3 years.

Since he stayed. Vegas will need to dump salary probably. 9 million. So I suggested Marner gets the 8th year and we get something back. Like karlson who fills a need.


Yesterday Dreger who was marners biggest mouthpiece and obviously connected said basically exactly what people guessed

1.) Marner wants Vegas (if he leaves)
2.) Marner would sign the 8th year.
3.) the sign and trade would allow the leafs to get something back.

They will want to keep his aav low because of Eichel.

now it’s a legit rumour due to dregers connections.

I would guess it would be taking back karlson who we could use and get rid of the salary. Who knows. Maybe Peteo wants to come home.

Lizotte makes 1.85, Kampf makes 2.4. I'm not going to gripe about the difference.

But as it stands, isn't Laughton the 4th C in Berube's eyes?

Fourth line got third line minutes. I actually liked that bit of coaching by Berube- allowed the only favourable matchup for the Leafa - the other third line v FLA’s fourth.
Though a puck carrier/play creator would have been nice there.

I know I'm likely in the minority, but I'd just keep Kampf there. He and the 4th line in general will be greatly helped by not having Reeves strapped to him.

It’s a decent idea.
I think there’s a perception that the Leafs euros aren’t physical enough for a fourth line, but both Kampf and Holmberg battle hard, Jarnkrok too.
I kinda wondered how a fourth line of Holmberg-Kampf-Kunin would look.
Kunin scores at a decent clip and likes to hit. He and Homberg could move up a line or two in a pinch and he can take some right side draws.

Karlsson was never mentioned by Dreger. I’m the person who brought him up when I speculated this scenario a month ago and then connected the dots on Dreger’s overdrive hit this week.
