Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

You can't blame the coaches for Rielly, sorry. It's been how many years that we've tried to find him a partner? We literally got Tanev for him who's top 5 in next defensive defensemen in the game, and even Tanev couldn't save Rielly. He's had 1 great year and has been on the down swing the last 3 years.

I'd be all for moving on from Rielly.

His $7.5mm is just 27th. for defenders, it is hard watching how he struggles to defend today.

Just move him to forward, and see if he can pull a Red Kelly and win a face-off.

Bennett, Marchand, Marchment and Tanev that's all you need for next season.

Knies Matthews Nylander
Marchand Bennett Cowan
Marchment Tavares Domi
Lorentz Laughton Tanev

You probably have 2 or 3 legitimate options for the FA's to play 2nd line center.. Duchane (34 & probably not coming here), Bennett (whose probably going to command way to much money), Nelson (33 years old). There all older players that you probably shouldn't be throwing term & money at, and in Bennett case $. I'd stay away from the one hit wonders of the world like Donato & Suter.

Toronto is truly not in a good spot to be replacing important roster players in FA this year. Especially when you traded all your draft capital away. They have a 2nd round pick in 2025 & a 2nd round pick in 2027, Danforth & Cowan as trade chips..

Granlund as well.

I think Rielly ends up being bought out next offseason. Unless Vancouver does us a solid I don't think he's tradeable considering the NMC.

Tavares probably comes back on a short-term deal. Matthews and Nylander unlikely to move unless they ask out.

If I were a betting man it would be us losing Marner for nothing and the already confirmed departure of Shanahan as the major subtractions. Could be worse I guess? At least Shanahan is gone.

For Vancouver, we have to hope they decide to move Hughes to NJD, so that he can have his wish and play with his brothers... Honestly, I can't see why they really want to keep him, and then let him walk for nothing in Free Agency. They aren't likely going to compete any time soon, so might as well move him and retool, rebuild.

Rielly fills that position for them, even if it's nowhere near as good, and the cost wouldn't be much for them.

Otherwise, I think we are stuck with him.

I hope that the talk of re-signing him is more out of politeness and respect, but Tavares has to go as well, even more so than Rielly IMO. One of them is actually a noticeably better performer in the playoffs, which is the real issue.

Also, I shudder to think of the defence without its most mobile/productive player, faults and all.
Yeah we need another puck-mover if Rielly is moved.

I can absolutely imagine Vancouver being stupid enough to walk Hughes straight to UFA in vain pursuit of a round of two of playoff revenue. Aquillini is stupid and selfish enough to mandate something like that. There's no chance Hughes re-signs in Vancouver, there's nothing they can do about it, and letting him walk for nothing would actually be far worse than the Leafs letting Marner walk for nothing (which is already dreadful on its own.) If I'm running Vancouver I am starting trade talks for him yesterday.

Rielly would be the kind of player they'd try to sell to their fanbase, and obviously no one with a brain thinks you can replace a player of Hughes' caliber at all, and certainly not so with a declining Rielly, but again Vancouver has one of the worst ownership situations in North America and there's no hope in sight for them. They're like a less shitty Buffalo Sabres but located in a far better city. Both teams are hopeless.
According to PuckEmpire -> Bruce Garrioch; the Toronto Maple Leafs tried to trade for Rasmus Ristolainen of the Philadelphia Flyers, but they were rejected.

Thank god for that.
I just threw up in my mouth.

Or do they want to save that cap space for Marner?

You think that Florida looks at Marner, and thinks that's the guy who delivers us to the next cup?

Besides, they'd need to walk from Bennett AND Ekblad to make that happen and have the cap space.... I don't think that's going to happen... who would you rather have in the playoffs, Bennett and Ekblad, or Marner for the same approximate money?

LeBrun was just talking about this on overdrive and yeah I do think they look at him and say - you don’t have to be the main guy here. You can be the 4th or 5th guy but you need to take the salary we offer you. Better taxes and lifestyle here and out of the spotlight. Very attractive for both sides

I would be absolutely shocked, if Marner signs for less money anywhere, for any reason. Especially if his Dad is involved... too much Hockey God ego there.

What about Jonathan Toews?

He's allegedly working hard on a comeback. On a one year deal, as a 3C maybe? He's they type of guy who has the reputation of being a winner. He was a Captain, who lead his team to the Cup. We could use that type of voice with this group... a winner, and leader, who knows what it takes.

If by some miracle McDavid becomes available this is the guy that can help this team more than anyone. Not just because he is skilled but because he has that killer mentality to win

If the Oilers had consistent goaltending they probably already win a cup or two with McDavid. But for some reason that organization has no clue how to get that goalie piece figured out. A lot like Dubas here

4C targets

Toews
Lizotte (Rielly deal?)
Kuraly
Faksa
Quillan

Lizotte is a really good PKer
Toews is a box of chocolates
Quillan is inexperienced
Faksa/Kuraly have durability concerns

Lizotte/Quillan are my top choices, I would like to get younger but Lizotte doesn't have a lot of draw back.

Leafs always find themselves with a vet reclamation project. Leafs apparently are/were interested. World class medical staff could be useful for him.

His hometown province seems more likely but the Leafs could be very intriguing.

Lizotte makes 1.85, Kampf makes 2.4. I'm not going to gripe about the difference.

But as it stands, isn't Laughton the 4th C in Berube's eyes?

Knies. Matthews. Nylander
Marchment. Bennett. Marchand
Mcmann Tavares Domi
Jeannot Laughton. Tanev

Out
Marner, Rielly, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Holmberg, Robertson

In
Bennett, Marchment, Tanev, Marchand, Jeannot

That's a tough, skilled and morally flexible forward core.
