Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Marchment is also a late bloomer though. They both are what they are. Marchment isn’t a minor bump in production. He’s produced an additional 21 points/82 GP over the last 2 seasons.

Why not go with Marchessault and Roslovic though? Staple the worse player to Matthews and let him earn that 13.25M.

Compared to Marchment? Marchment has had 4 full seasons in the NHL and 162 more NHL games to his belt with only being a year older. McMann just finished his 2nd. His first season he was definitely not used in a meaningful way and only finished the season with 11 min TOI/G with barely any PP. And then he missed the last bit of season and playoffs with an injury. I really don't see the appeal at all for that kind of move, it's basically going sideways at best for more cap used.

I'm just not a big fan of Roslovic and would prefer someone with PK ability, physicality and overall fits into a lower end role. I just think we can do better imo. I might be very wrong with that one.

Kampf + Jarnkrok --> Krebs
Rielly --> Vancouver (assuming they traded Hughes to NJD) for Sherwood + 1st (15th OA)
Matthews -> LA Kings, Byfield + Clarke + Greentree + 1st (27th OA)
Carlo --> Edmonton -> Evander Kane
Reaves --> To whomever, for whatever

Sign
Knies 8 x $7.22
Tavares 4 x $4.5
Bennett 5 x $6.6
Ehlers 6 x $8.1
Provorov 6 x $7 mil
Ekblad 5 x $7.8

Knies Byfield Nylander
Ehlers Bennett Kane
McMann Tavares Domi
Sherwood Krebs Laughton

Provorov Ekblad
McCabe Tanev
OEL Clarke
Benoit

Bigger, faster, more physical... better??? Well, it's different.. a lot of moving pieces.
I like your optimism.

It'll get boston a top pick in 2027.is what that does sadly

If you want to retool a year then that's fine

But you gave Kane + Nelson + Marchand t 4 years is killing our chances to win

Oh I wasn’t paying attention to term. I made it for jt then I just filled in a bunch of ufas.

I think realistically we keep

Knies. Matthews. Nylander

Laughton. Tavares. Domi.

If Tavares comes in at 5. Then we have probably 20 million for 2 new forwards.

I think Mcmann/robbie/kampf/Jarnkrok are all gone.

Could try to get a Kane/duchene/benn/marchand etc on short deals.

I wonder what Buffalo would want for McLeod. Fast 2 way C who is getting better every year at faceoffs. Realistically he's probably the perfect complimentary C for Nylander and he's probably only gonna get like 5-6 mil on his next deal or even less depending on term which will be a steal because he's just 25. Idk what Buffalo would want for him though but he is a RFA. Like damn, would they take Rielly, Robertson and Kampf lol.

Edit: Forgot to add Bowen from Buffalo.

Oh crap! Nobody's talking about Pius Suter here (except us) so I thought he had 1 more year left. That's great that he's an UFA. He's a solid 3C/2C to go after. He would fit well rotating with JT.

Yeah, a Rielly trade to Vancouver could be interesting. Fogelhund brought up Sherwood and 15OA. I wouldn't mind that. Or Sherwood, Joshua and a later pick.
No way you are getting 15OA for Rielly and his remaining 5 years.

As others have mentioned, you can't really replace Marner... so you probably shouldn't bother trying.

They've got Max Domi, who is far from an ideal #3C, and was a liability in that position at times in both the playoffs and regular season. In my view, he's an ideal right winger on an Auston Matthews line.

You look at the group Florida ran, and they absolutely need to be deeper in the middle of the ice, while getting a player who can also take tough matchups like Anton Lundell did.

I have no idea where that centre is going to come from, as they don't have much in the way of trade bait.... Robertson, Holmberg, Kampf, Jarnkrok? Sure they all have probably have a bit of value, but they're not needle-movers.

They moved the only guy in their system with the upside to do that (Fraser Minten), and I don't get the sense that Brock Nelson is interested in playing in Canada or that Sam Bennett is a good idea. Maybe Matt Duchene?

As for theoretical lines...

Knies-Matthews-Domi
McMann-Duchene-Nylander
UFA-Tavares-Cowan
Lorentz-Laughton-Jarnkrok

It probably still leaves you shopping for that ideal #3C at the deadline, but certainly enough depth to get you through the regular season, and leaves you with a decent amount of depth if a guy like Tavares or Duchene end up shifting over come playoff time.

I think we need to find a speedy and skilled 2C to play with Nylander

Rielly for a 1st (Nucks 15th?)

15th + Cowan for Barzal

That gives you the below top 6

Knies - Matthews - XXX
XXX - Barzal - Nylander

You can place Domi on L1 and see how that line fares. That is what I would like to do

LW2 target another shooter. Ryan Donato at 5M would be a good option

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Donato - Barzal - Nylander

In what world is Rielly returning a 1st? Maybe if the Leafs retained 50%.

If VAN deal Hughes they could be in the market for a PMD.

Id retained him down to 5.5M but not more than that.

We probably will run the same team with tier 2/3 UFAs like you proposed earlier

I could see Roslovic, Tanev JR (he's a UFA if I'm not mistaken), being targets + maybe Granlund.

Don't think much will change on tbe roster besides marner replaced with 3 UFAs upfront

If VAN deal Hughes they probably go in a rebuild. He most likely goes to NJD if dealt and the best roster player coming back would be Mercer. At that point they probably just deal Pettersson and burn it down. I highly doubt they use their 1st to bring in an aging D.

I’d love to see Rielly moved but his value is probably close to Trouba.

I do think Tavares comes back on a short-term deal. I think Marner is done, from both sides, and that Shanahan won't be renewed.
Its sad but I've always felt that in return for giving up the captaincy JT gets a long term contract. Good luck selling this to the fan base after that performance.

Just think if we kept Kadri we could be signing McDavid and Tavares after next season and have McDavid-Matthews-Kadri-Tavares as our 4 centers while having Jarvis too. :sarcasm:

What a dynasty we could've been.
