Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

We'll see.

But if folks want tangible change, you actually have to change something. I think we're past the point of sentimentality.
Sentimentality may have ceased to exist with the captaincy removed and the lack of a new contract (again, from the perspective of both team and player).

Try to get Bennett, trade Robertson, don’t bring back JT/Marner, and only sign guys to 1-year deals. Reload in 2026.

Robertson + 2nd for Marchment
8x$7.5 mill for Knies
7x$7 mill for Bennett
1x$4 mill for Kane
1x$1 mill for Perry
1x$5 mill Donato

Knies-Matthews-Kane
Marchment-Bennett-Nylander
McMann-Donato-Domi
Lorentz-Laughton-Perry

It’s a step back in the regular season but the Leafs will be harder to play against.

I think one of the plays here is you trade Reilly to his home town for Quinn Hughes.

He wants out of Vancouver, Hughes grew up in TO and is a Leaf fan.

Add whatever you need to make it work, but Vancouver is desperate to get a Quinn Hughes replacement.
There isn't enough marijuana in British Columbia that will compel the Canucks to do that.

For people freaking out after Game 7 that want to trade Matthews:

to Los Angeles
Matthews (3 year contract)
Robertson ( RFA this summer )

to Toronto
Byfield (4 year contract)
Fiala (4 year contract)

For people look for cap hits... this trade is totally cap-neutral if Robertson signs for $0.9m. If you assume that he's signing for more than that, than any dollars beyond $0.9m are dollars that the Leafs are opening up in cap space with this trade.

Fiala - Byfield - ( Marner ? )
Knies - ( Tavares ? ) - Nylander
McMann - Domi - ( Pacioretty ? )
Holmberg - Laughton - Jarnkrok
13F - Kampf
14F - ( Reaves / UFA )
callup = Easton Cowan

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo
Benoit - OEL
7D - Myers

Why?

Matthews too old?

Matthews not signed long term enough to give up Byfield?

You think the value is bad for Kings? Matthews is going to be in the Hockey Hall Of Fame when he retires.
First you’re fast and loose with the Kings players with multiple teams trade threads. The Kings aren’t going to gut their young core for one player (Kings have zero use for Robertson). Byfield is an absolute non-starter, he is the 1C for this team. Leafs are better off trying to trade with other teams. Seriously, why would the Leafs trade Matthews (they won’t) he’s going to be a Hall of Famer.

Toronto probably going to retool at the cost of Marner to fill out the depth of the roster... Problem is with lack of tradeable assets, building your forward group through free agency is going to age horribly for the team.

I believe Tavares will be back, at a cheap deal, there's no way Toronto retains him without getting a sweetheart deal. No point in paying market value for something that hasn't worked, but if they can get a 2C/3C for under market value, they will be happy to run it back with him.

Toronto essentially has to fill out via free agency: 2RW, 2LW, 2C/3C

Who do you pay in FA to fill those holes? Donato/Bennett/Boeser/Ehlers/Saad/Mantha/Olofsson/Mangiapane/Mantha? The free agency list isn't exactly very good and appealing to throw tons of money at...

The players like Jarnkrok/Kampf/Robertson (Berube causality)/Domi (Not sure where Domi fits on this team, can't play center, too much of a liability to be a 3rd liner and not good enough for top 6 mins).

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
XXX - XXX - XXX
XXX -Tavares - Cowan (I think Toronto needs to find talent value in their ELC contracts. Like Dallas did & FLA)
Lorentz - Laughton - McMann

Haha, nah.

But I think you're kidding yourself if you think Holland would turn down what is basically Matthews for Byfield.
I think your kidding yourself if you think Brad is going to trade Matthews. Kings are better off sticking with Byfield at half the price.

Time to start building out the next gen of talent before they all bail for nothing or age out.

Matthews to LA
for
Liam Greentree (RW)
Brandt Clarke (RD)
2026 1st

(1) There's a salary cap
(2) This has Toronto with too many D and a huge hole at center, and LA with too many centers and a huge hole at D. Even if the cap worked, it doesn't help both teams build a roster. You'd probably need to include a Leafs D too (Rielly? Benoit?) and a Kings center too (Danault probably, Kopitar if he hypothetically was okay not retiring a King).

This UFA Market is Garbage, we have no picks & prospects, and no assets to trade for those.

We're in for a rough retool... At this point Marner still has to go.
