Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

It's bad every July 1st. If anything, right now, it's pretty solid if it stays the same. You rarely ever see a Marner hit free agency for one. But for the Leafs, there are plenty of options to fill out depth and needs. Using free agency is always like playing russian roulette but Treliving has done well to not have bad misses.

It can change quite a bit in a few weeks so we'll see.

I'm tired of Marner as much as anyone but yeah Brad is gonna have to make a franchise altering decision this off-season.

Bennett and Marchand are first choice of course.

Boeser and Ehlers are interesting but they've had their own playoff demons, are 50 point guys and not entirely different from Mitch style wise. If I could guarantee I'm signing both for less than Mithc would I do it? Probably, yes but free agency is a huge risk, you never know who is gonna get what. I'd love to be an NHL GM, but not sure I'd want to be Brad right now lol

Tbh if I was Chicago I'd try and sign Boeser and Mitch, think they would pair nicely together lol

More or less agree. I think you can easily bring back JT if he's willing to go 5M and under. Even in a few years if the Leafs need to rebuild, being able to trade him to a contender for a high price will be well worth it. He's a good player still and many teams would love to get him for a playoff run even as he gets older.

I wouldn't trade every prospect either, especially Cowan who could be a cheap effective player for the Leafs as early as next season, but everything should be considered for the right player.
Tavares is a 40-50 pt player in the playoffs that is slow, can't play defense, has poor intangibles.

He fits maybe at 2M as a guy chasing a cup in a vet role with some personal bonuses for teams playoff success. He doesn't fit in a top 6 role with PP1 time.

He has 31 pts in 51 playoff games as a pure offensive center. Disastrous and not worth 5M when he'll be 35+ on his next deal

He should be moved to the wing while still taking faceoffs. Hes outstanding around the net, especially on the pp.

How much money does Benn want? He likely can’t get much in Dallas.

Dallas has Johnston’s, Rantanen’s, and Ottinger’s contracts kicking in next year.
He’s made over 100 sheets and has 16 years with the team that drafted him, perennially strong.
I wouldn’t expect him to move.

He was the least of the problems, but I probably wouldn't bring Lorentz back. I would like the 4th line to be tough as nails, in your face and a nightmare to play against and Lorentz wasn't that. Of course, Jarnkrok gone as well.

Tanev - Laughton - Jeannot
These playoffs indicated to me that the bottom six might need a significant overhaul because too much of it offered too little in terms of both offence and defence (Jarnkrok being more of a liability compared to Lorentz, relative to expectations/contract).

Yep. Every forward outside of potentially those four can and should be replaced.

The D is fine.

See if another team would value Woll and then pull the trigger

Worst defensive results for the team in a long time.

Is the D fine? They are pretty old.

Do you give up on Woll in favour of a guy who will be a UFA soon and also had bad numbers?

Sounds like they'd be able to get a pretty team friendly deal if they want him back. And the need for centres likely means they will

Mirtle said earlier in the winter the team has some talks about an extension. I'd assume they'll circle back

They can try but he may say no. And the team doesn't have much to trade with.

Doesn't mean they can't move on from JT, but it's tight. Maybe Bennet?
Well, you need a GM who can find Reinhart and Bennett-type deals. Giving up not much, and getting something quite good back.

I don't think Treliving is that guy, though

Nobody wants to hear this but: This UFA class is absolute dogshit and unless we sign Bennett + Marchand with the money we would give Mitch, we probably need to bring him back, but for gods sake dont give him an NMC.

I'd wager that Marchand and Bennett both resign in Florida and we're stuck with what we got tho.

Ideal off-season assuming that:

-Find someone to take Mo, who thinks he still has some game left.
-Resign JT for some insane team friendly deal
-Cowan is more NHL ready than we think (doubtful)
-Revamp our PP with a real PP QB and someone with a one timer (i'd love Tolvanen, he also hits a ton)
-Add some dog on bone players who have f***ing passion. Florida goon'd it up in the first 4 games and we just took it.
Sign Bennett, Ekblad and Marchand and just let MM walks.
I know the cap is going up but a lot of teams can’t afford to use their full cap due to not having enough revenue.

Ideally that would be great. At least two of the three are staying in FLA tho. Let's be serious.

I'm trying to be realistic.
