Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

The sun will rise tomorrow...

Just reset with Matthews, Nylander and Knies upfront. Pressure JT into taking a discount if he wants to stay. Dump the majority of the forward depth. Get aggressive to find a competent offensive defenseman.

And then... uh... let Treliving pull off some magic I guess.

Is Tre doing all this?

At least we can look forward to a re tool possibly. Was all for bringing Tavares back but I think I'm only ok with that ow if he takes a huge discount and not the 7 mil he's projected to get. Might be time to move on from Rielly as well.

After the way Toronto's fanbase reacted all playoffs long at home, I don't understand why anybody in their right mind would want to play there.

Marner gone. Tavares gone. Ask Rielly if he'd consider a trade.

Opens up nearly 30 million in cap space. Sign Knies on a bridge and spend that ~25M best you can.

Trade every propsect and pick for the next 3 years. If it doesn't happen in three years, blow it up and start over again with a full rebuild.

It's sad, but this is the most efficient way to do this and nobody can change my mind.

More or less agree. I think you can easily bring back JT if he's willing to go 5M and under. Even in a few years if the Leafs need to rebuild, being able to trade him to a contender for a high price will be well worth it. He's a good player still and many teams would love to get him for a playoff run even as he gets older.

I wouldn't trade every prospect either, especially Cowan who could be a cheap effective player for the Leafs as early as next season, but everything should be considered for the right player.

For people freaking out after Game 7 that want to trade Matthews:

to Los Angeles
Matthews (3 year contract)
Robertson ( RFA this summer )

to Toronto

Byfield (4 year contract)
Fiala (4 year contract)

For people look for cap hits... this trade is totally cap-neutral if Robertson signs for $0.9m. If you assume that he's signing for more than that, than any dollars beyond $0.9m are dollars that the Leafs are opening up in cap space with this trade.

Fiala - Byfield - ( Marner ? )
Knies - ( Tavares ? ) - Nylander
McMann - Domi - ( Pacioretty ? )
Holmberg - Laughton - Jarnkrok
13F - Kampf
14F - ( Reaves / UFA )
callup = Easton Cowan

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo
Benoit - OEL
7D - Myers

if you resign Tavares it's for $5 mil or less and it's for 3rd C with PP time. You find a younger #2 C to rebuild the 2nd line around.

Just buy him out if he digs in his heels.

He's not THAT bad. Maybe next off-season if he regresses further... but his buyout right now would be 1.6M next year, which is not bad, but jumps up to 3.6M until 2030, then 2M until 2035... 10 years of dead cap space? No thanks.

There's no way to me that's an option. You either talk to him about a trade if something comes up, if not you hope he can bounce back. Many players have done so.

Let Marner walk, re sign Tavares cheap at depth, shop Matthews and try and get a 1st line 2way or power forward and proper OFD, seriously look at drafting higher potential goaltenders, shop Cowan (Marner 2.0), ask Rielly to consider being moved and move him. Build around Knies, keep Domi, keep Tanev, build a bottom 6 with grit and physicality not tier 2 forecheckers. This team has never had a chance, they’ve been built wrong since Dubas failed to recognize the difference between an OHL roster and an NHL club. Time for changes. FIRE SHANNAHAN.

We'll have a very good idea how good and serious Treliving is at his job. This team needs to get busy well before July 1st. They can't sit on their hands again.

I also wonder if the Leafs will push out Shanahan, promote Treliving as President to oversee the hockey operations, and then get a new GM. Similar to how a lot of teams have their setup (Vegas, Colorado, MTL, etc).
