Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Marchand is at that age where im pretty sure he wants to finish his career in Florida and in a warm climate. He asked to be traded to Florida for a reason.

He'd be nice in the top 6 though

I won't be surprised if that happens.

But also depends if they're willing to pay. I can easily see him wanting about 12 mil spread over 2 years of term. Will the Panthers have the space for a 6 mil aav?

I almost feel he'd be intrigued to sign here for the absurdity of it all given his personality

To old and his career and points totals are starting to fall off

Dallas look like there going to be in tough cap wise, what about taking Marchment off there hands?

29, 4.5M cap hit, big bodied LW, probably get you 45-55 points, only a year or two left on his deal, 2nd or 3rd line

Might be a good buy low opportunity

Can we trade Reilly for him lol

Marchment strikes me as a guy Tre would have interest in. Has a bit more of a scoring touch than a guy like McMann too

I think they'd be better off trying to trade Matthews for a top pairing dman and re-signing Marner than keeping Matthews and letting Marner walk.

Matthews is not dangerous at all, Marner can at least make offensive plays.

1) Sign Knies to either $7.5M x 8 or $5M x 2. Assume it's the latter ($25M left)
2) RFAs: Re-sign Robertson to a $1.1M x 2, Holmberg to $1M x 1 ($22.9M left)
3) Own UFAs: Re-sign Lorentz to $1M ($21.8M left), and let Marner, Tavares, and Pacioretty hit the open market ($21.9M left)

Knies Matthews __________
McMann _______ Nylander
Jarnkrok Domi Robertson
Holmberg Laughton Lorentz
Extras: Kampf

McCabe Tanev
Rielly Carlo
Benoit/OEL/Myers

Woll
Stolarz

- Throw Quillan, Cowan into the mix as the 13th forward (or causes one of the above to sub out from the starting roster). But neither of whom would occupy a blank. Ideally it'd be Quillan unless Cowan cracks the Top 9.
- Evaluate Niemala or Kokkonen for depth as 6th defenceman

- Assume that a max of 2 out of 4 would make the roster, which gets you to 21 + 2 blanks.

4) UFA Signings
- Bring back Tavares on $5M x 3 or $8.5M x 1. I'd prefer the latter, but I assume he'll take the former. If Tavares signs elsewhere, I'd offer $4.0M x 3 or $6.0M X 1 to Matt Duchene.
- Sign Patrick Kane to $5M x 1
- Sign Vladislav Gavrikov to $6.5M X 6 ($2M left)

2025-2026 Lineup

Knies Matthews Kane
McMann Tavares/Duchene Nylander
Cowan Domi Robertson
Holmberg Laughton Jarnkrok

Extra: Kampf (rotated in, which works with $2M left in capspace)

McCabe Gavrikov
Rielly Carlo
OEL Tanev

Extras: Benoit, Myers

Stolarz
Woll

I think with the lineup, that's at minimum a wildcard or 3rd in division team next season. Competitive enough to do some damage next season with a bit of upside due to an improved defensive corps, growth from Knies, Cowan, and Woll. More importantly, it preserves cap space for next summer. Currently, there's $43M of 2026-2027 cap space. The above gets you to about $28M available to spend when someone like McDavid could somehow become available lol. If not McDavid, it's still a stronger UFA class to spend your money on if you do intend to stay competitive with Matthew and Nylander in their primes.

At least one or two of Panarin, Eichel, Kaprizov, Makar, Connor, and Kempe will likely hit UFA along with a number of secondary role players to round out the team.

Not sure about keeping Robertson. He is kind of a tweener on the Leafs so I think he'd be better off elsewhere and they can easily sign someone better to replace him.

I agree with everyone saying bring Patches back. As I've said in other threads here, he wasn't signed for Tuesday night games in Columbus in February, he was signed for the playoffs - and he has earned every cent of his salary.

Tavares has looked very ineffective for most of this series.

If he wants to sign some bargain contract with us sure but doubt that's going to happen and I'd just not resign him and move on.

I think there’s a lot of mental demons affecting Matthew’s Marner Tavares nylander and Rielly. They have been here for all 10 years.

I think you consider Marner and Tavares walking and looking at moving the other 3. Trading the other 3 doesn’t mean rebuild but a whole retool. You still can get roster players that can play. Doesn’t mean trade them for picks and prospects.

At least money hungry mitch wont be signing here no matter how much they pay him.

Last 20 minutes of the worst core in sports history. THANK GOD!
