Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

They'll target an upper level free agent in the likes of Ehlers, Granlund and Bennett, but yeah unlikely they go hard like that. It's going to take some creative bargaining not to kill the cap with term for average/meh players. Treliving has been good at it so far, but his Calgary days showed some bad times.

Leafs can get creative on the trade front. The one that can be solid is the Robertson trade. He has value. It's finding the right fit.
Obviously so early, but the two paths forward I see look like stacking the top line (MK-AM-WN) or keeping AM and WN separated.
If separated, I’d look into Pius Suter to pair with Willy, but I think Nick Ehlers would make a good running mate.
If stacked, then a goal scorer like Boeser (buddy with AM) would be a smart second line add. Assuming JT comes back.
I think you make a good point about NickRob. Guy was close to .5ppg last year, and hasn’t really been deployed with talent to maximize his skills.
Heading into the off-season, Max *looks* like an important guy (1rw? 2LW?3c/lw) until other players are added. And there are reports the teams not too fussed.
Could go so many ways….hard to speculate….and hard to imagine sweeping forward changes given the teams actually made small incremental improvements this year (winning the division and first round).

I can't shake the feeling of Marner ending up in Vegas and signing just above the Rantanen deal on a sign and trade. His agent will have Dreger tweeting that 12.5M in a no-tax state is the highest take home money in the league. Vegas can't help themselves anytime a star becomes available.

Marner signed to 12.5Mx8 to VGK for Karlsson makes sense. That's probably the best piece the Leafs could pull in a sign and trade for a UFA and Karlsson solves a short-term need for the Leafs. VGK would need to clear cap space which is why I think they'd move off Karlsson.

This has been my thought for a year. I thought he would have went there for Theodore last draft. Pushing the rantanen thing out of ones head.

Vegas
best case scenario is Marner decides to go to a cash strapped team like Vegas, were we actually have to do a S&T but I'll assume that won't happen.

Vegas is in desperate need of elite wingers, especially with Stone being injured. Something like Wild Bill + another piece could work.

Yes they would need to get rid of about 9 million in salary to sign Hague and Marner.
I would have wanted Hague and Karlson but honestly the way Benoit is playing.

Barbarshev. Eichel. Marner
Dorofev. Hertl. Stone
Howden. Roy.

And filler.

We would end up with

Knies. Matthews. Domi
Tavares. Nylander.
Laughton. Karlson.

Knies-Matthews-Ehlers
Marchand-JT-88

Or go full Florida

Knies-Matthews-Ehlers
Marchand-Bennett-88

Personally, I found that JT-88 don't have natural chemistry, they're just good players that happen to play on the same line.

I tend to agree.
In a way 88 reminds me of the Mats days where he never really had a running mate.
I can’t quite come around on Bennett.
If it happens….great, I guess, I’ll try to support it….but I’m not sure he leaves FLA anyway.
Marchand…..just can’t see it either for some reason.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Ehlers - Granlund/Tavares/Bennett - Nylander
Marchand/McMann - Laughton - Cowan
Lorentz - IDK - Tanev?

Laughton takes PK1, your 4th line C takes PK2. Marchand/Knies the wingers on the PK.

Marner 21 minutes, Nylander Benched LOL
Maybe not necessarily benched really. More like Marner was doing alot of PK and of course Nylander doesn't do alot of that. Even strength time on ice Marner had about 4 minutes more and some of that was at the end of the game trying to protect the lead.

If Marchand walks, Tre might as well offer him an aggressive offer on a 2-3 year deal.

Let's at least get some entertaining players if they're going to struggle
Marchand is at that age where im pretty sure he wants to finish his career in Florida and in a warm climate. He asked to be traded to Florida for a reason.

He'd be nice in the top 6 though

Split Marner's money into Brock Boeser and Sam Bennett maybe?

Knies - Mathews - Boeser
Bennett - Tavares - Nylander
Mcmann - Domi - Cowan
Lorentz - Laughton - Jeannot
Holmberg

I think both those players combined will make more than Marner

I'd put Marner around 13M and I could see those other two getting 8M each

I wonder if Marner walks if you would be better off going Dvorak plus Ehlers, fill a top 6 hole and 3C in one go or Bennett plus Grandlund, Marchand plus Bennett

Something like that

That was supposed to be Laughton.

Suter is the guy I'd go for as FA, though.

Well it isn’t Laughton. He can be an elite #4.

Suter isn’t what wins at playoff time and he isn’t what Bérubé would want.

If Tavares signs for 5, he’s an easy resign. After that, you probably have to get creative.

Perhaps a bridge solution like Pageau from NYI. He’s got just 1 year left, and is a 40 point guy who’s elite in a matchup shut down role.

The bar for most was win two rounds... if they manage to pull this off tonight, are we on the run it back, because they have proven to be winners? What's the bar now?

They’ve already shown enough this season to run it back.

No. This is where make the final tweaks like taking an expensive soft perimeter player making 11m and getting a couple gutsy players with a history of playoff performances. Look a Laughton. He has actually stabilized us quite a bit.

If they hit the finals sure. Convincing ECF, maybe

Let's see how today goes. For me, it was getting to the 3rd round and being competitive, not necessarily winning that round.

Also, bringing them back still has economic/cap implications, irrespective of the result.
