If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Ehlers is very fast, we're not a fast team...I think if the price is like 7x7 for example, I have interest. I would frontload the F out of it with signing bonuses to catch his interest.

His playoff production is not strong though so I would struggle to move beyond the 7M price.

$7.5 is the AFP Analytics expected, so you aren't far off... unless the rise in cap causes ridiculous bidding up of salaries.

I guess I should preface this by saying that I don't expect Ehlers to come in at anything under 8-9 Million per. He is currently making 6, with his production and cap increases, he could easily be looking at 9 on the open market. Now is Ehlers at 9 and another player at 4-5 million (which would eliminate Boeser in my mind) a forward move? For arguments sake, when the expected Marner deal is between 13-14 million.

If you threw a few 10M years at the front of the contract with signing bonuses at like 9.1M and then see the AAV start to drop towards the end of the deal...you're putting a lot of cash into someone's pocket fast.

If they let down this spring again, my ideal is letting Marner walk, if he can't be brought back at reasonable terms, replacing him with Kane on a 1 year deal at 4-6 million even, add a solid defender (thinking Fabbro) and then sign one of Duchene/Tavares for the 2 C, whoever is more reasonable.

I also can't stand Benoit though, so that's my priority 1, shoring up the defense.

I know they won't all make it to FA, but the year after has Mcdavid, Connor, Kaprizov, Eichel, Panarin, Necas, Kempe, etc.

Ehlers is a walmart version of Marner, hard pass.

Chychrun would be my ideal target, assuming we can dump Reilly somewhere. Im done with Reilly.

Chychrun would be great, but I think he'll extend with Washington... that's a good spot for him.

On Ehlers, is your preference just to keep Marner?

Chychrun is someone the Leafs should have pursued a lot harder before and if he makes to UFA they should be all over him. He's going to be hard to sign though and likely will get at least 8-9M, if not over 10M. I'd be shocked if he doesn't re-sign with the Caps anyway.

Ekblad is obviously an interesting gamble and a RHD. After that, it's not a great crop of dynamic defensemen on the UFA market.
I agree with that. Puzzled that we didn't bring him in earlier, especially given the cheap price! Would have fit perfectly.

It's already been stated that his agent is in contract talks with Washington, so I highly doubt he's going to be available.

Why we didn't pursue him.... he's been fairly poor defensively for a few years now, not physical... like -30 with Ottawa last year, and poor on a number of other metrics. I just don't think that's what Berube was looking for, particularly on a team that already had a Left Handed version of that.

Now he's found a spot and system that works for him, and a D partner he has chemistry with, and his game has come alive.

What’s everyone’s best possible bottom 6 lineup, assuming that all of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Knies and McMann are in the top 6

If Chychrun is most likely re-signing in Washington (probably what’s best for him), I really hope we can trade Rielly and than sign Provorov and Perbix.

Ideal Rielly trade for me would be,

To Toronto: EJ Emery + 2nd Rounder
To Rangers: Morgan Rielly

Provorov - Carlo
McCabe - Tanev
Ekman Larsson - Perbix
Myers

What a transformation of the blueline that would be. We’re also set in goal with Stolarz and Woll.

That's tough... even with a massively rising cap, there isn't much money left over.

Steeves 900k Duchene $3mil Cowan $904k
Lorentz $1.2 Laughton $1.5 mil Jeannot $1.8 mil.

I have Marner at $13.5 Knies at $5.5

I'm $900k from the cap, with a 20 man roster.... I doubt Duchene signs here though... but it's a try.

From 32 thoughts, basically confirming Leafs are going to be in on Luke Haymes whom we've been linked to a few times already.

I'd look at bringing back Lorentz and Steeves. Laughton will likely be back as well. I also don't think Domi will be gone, but we'll see. I'd also expect Holmberg back, the coach likes him.

I would target Mason Appleton, Eric Robinson, Luke Kunin, Connor Brown (im biased), B. Tanev, Jeannot, Brazeau, Bjugstad and Dvorak. In our price range. Obviously cap prices will vary player to player but I think picking up a couple of these players would be solid work depending on the cap situation and other trades/moves. There are obviously always a few min league players that could work to fill depth, similar to the Lorentz pick up.

Could be KHL/Europe related. I'd take a shot at Shabanov. He's small but very skilled and and a great skater. He's apparently signing with an NHL team in the next few weeks. He plays on the same team as ex-Leafs prospect SDA.

From the NCAA, Karsen Dorwart is probably the top prize.

Honestly, I’d be open to giving Josh Leivo a PTO.

Dude is tearing it up in the KHL.

31 years old
6’1, 190 lbs
Right hand shot and can score.

League minimum, I don’t see a downside.

Quinn Hutson looks like he’s having a very good year, a d attended Leaf camp.

Love that we are in on NCAA free agents. Need to scoop up some prospects. A number of good centres this year. Bring them all in Bradley.

I’m a big fan of McMann and he’s worked pretty well with Nylander, but ideally he slots on your third line in a perfect world.

I’d also be shocked if Cowan started the year off with the Maple Leafs next season but it would be nice to have a Jarvis or Mercer type impact.

Jeannot would be a nice add to the bottom six, huge physical presence that can actually play in the lineup.

I think a bottom six something like this would be nice. Only downfall, no right handed shooters…

McMann - Laughton - Cowan
Lorentz - Holmberg - Jeannot

Good call on Jeannot. Probably someone the Leafs would love to bring to replace Reaves' role.

Good scenario comparison here.

I remember distinctly being disappointed we didn’t get Murphy instead of McCabe at the time.

Now I am fully in the camp of being disappointed we didn’t get Murphy AND McCabe……. ;)
Just curious…

Which Maple Leaf player with the last name McCabe do you prefer more?

Jake or Bryan ?

The Bryan of 20 years ago or the Jake of 20 years later ( so right now) ?
