I don't think we need to move Lucic to fit Tank if he's retained 50%. Flames are sitting on 1.3 mil in cap space and it's accruing. This isn't including Kylington on LTIR for a personal reason (2.5 mil). Flames and Blues could theoretically consummate a deal with pure prospects and picks.

But if Calgary is looking to win, why would they want Lucic taking up 5+ million of their cap space as they head into the playoffs?

I'll be quite surprised if he isn't traded this season

he's useful enough in the bottom 6 and unless we make another deal and want his cap (not required for a 4-5AAV rental I believe), what's the point of paying to move him and then paying more to add a rental? Might as well just keep him.

You're not paying to move him, he would be the outgoing player/salary in a deal for that rental

What's going on with RoR this year? I haven't had the opportunity to watch the Blues play, but 1 point in 9 games and minus 12.

Err... I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's necessary. If it made sense to move Lucic as part of the deal though, sure.

It makes sense not to have 5 million tied up on Lucic heading into the playoffs when that cap hit could go to a more productive player

Agreed. If the price of acquisition is right.

I still disagree that it won't cost extra assets to include Lucic as part of the trade, and that's not including his right to exercise his NMC.

Why would a team who's selling at the deadline care about taking on Lucic's contract for 2 months to end the season?

He's being paid just 1 million in actual dollars this season, so they'd have to pay him what, 200k?

Because they'd have to put in the effort or wait for Treliving to sort out the NMC as part of the trade and potentially see their trade fall through (and miss out on assets) instead of being consummated?

Would NYR be interested in Tarasenko? If they pick up a weapon for the top 6 and a veteran bottom pairing D man at the deadline, they'd be hard to pick against in the playoffs
This is the one to me that makes absolute sense. Tarasenko and Panarin playing Russian hockey at its finest on their off wings, with a responsible centre, would give the Rangers the 2 scoring lines they need. Tarasenko on the PP, with Panarin, Zibanajed, Kreider and Fox, probably puts them in the upper echelon.

Rangers are not falling back of the pack, but they do have to be concerned about the teams in front of them. Having that extra 1st comes in handy, and then pick your young player to head over, and I think that addresses St. Louis's need to get something for a player they have to trade if they are not in contention.
