This is what happens when you base your rebuild off of acquiring 3rd-4th-and 5th round draft picks. MTL has not properly rebuilt like the other teams who do so by loading up on first and second round prospects to acquire elite talent.

Our talent is very middle of the pack, lots of good depth players but no elite skill or talent, except on the back end. Our offensive will continue to struggle for the next decade it appears. And unfortunately we don’t have Carey Price to cover all of our weaknesses.
HuGo have added 1st and 2nd round picks where they could. You have to have something to trade though. They traded the assets they had for 1sts and 2nds and prospects and traded a low 1st and 2nd for a mid first asset. Most of the veterans MB left were worthless in the trade market.

The result of this game was pretty much predictable in advance, Buffalo might have the best prospect team in the NHL right now...saw some good things, but also some limitations, all expected.

Savoie, Benson, Kulich and Rosen are all superior to our forwards (maybe a debate Rosen vs. Mesar, but Rosen seems to be developing better thus far). And Savoie is certainly the kind of player we don't have in our prospect pool at forward. Kulich and Savoie are probably close to the NHL in this order - although I would like to see Savoie (selfishly) bring home a WJC for Canada he might make the Sabres early as a firestarter (and Buffalo lacks this in their lineup).

Kulich is ready for promotion in the main lineup.
I wouldn't judge the roster on the ice too harshly vs Buffalo last night as you said. As you and others have said, they have 4 first rounders up front alone, AND a guy like Kulich? Last year he was turning into a dominant AHL player at the end of the season and in the playoffs. That guy should be fighting for a Roster spot in the NHL, NOT playing in a prospects tournament. Rosen, Kisakov, Kozak, and one or two more all all players for Buffalo that had considerable time playing against men In the AHL...they simply are at a different point in their development.

A better judge of these guys will be in the next couple of games. Its not that Buffalo's players are that much BETTER, its just they have more experience and are in a different point in their development.

We absolutely have development specialists and coaching has nothing to do with these exhibition games. This organization is currently a leader in developmental techniques and has an intense focus on development.......the Bergevin era is long gone.

These games are about letting the kids play, offering instruction after the game and growing relationships. They are not about structure and winning.
Zero evidence of successful development below MSL.

I agree with your point regarding relationships, however their time with development professionals is finite so yes fundamentals or structure (as you put it) need to be addressed. They want the boys to have fun but they set up line formations & d-pairings because playing is just one aspect of learning, especially at this level….many times you can witness the PD coaching in real time. As for winning???? I’m certain the kids want to win, management wants a thorough assessment or evaluation of prospect depth winning’s not their top priority, obviously. cheers.

Can't wait for Houle to be fired.. get someone who doesn't handicap their players before they play a game for them and continue that through their next season of their development.
I guess on a good note MSL not wanting to look at any tape of Newhook before he makes his own assessment is refreshing. I heard Houle talking about trying to mirror the same systems that are being used by the big club but I'm not sure if that is a great idea or not. The PP strategy is completely flawed and someone's nose has to be held to the grindstone this season if we don't fix it. For me it's on the Head Coach at either level.

To be honest Mesar over Kulich is starting to look like when Boston got Pasta and we got Scherbak, except at least we didn't even have the chance to pick Pastrnak. Are Czech players underscouted or undervalued again?
Imo, when you get the undersized guy, he needs to score a lot of points to value his draft position. Mesar at 5 ft 9 over Kulich at 6ft. Kulich on a better league. This is something I will never understand. This is like the OHL vs LHJMQ. I value most of the time a better producer in the OHL vs the Q.

Reason why people keep whining about too be careful in adding too many small players 'cause we already have some...note that in due time...Gallagher won't be there. And Mesar and Farrell will NOT be a factor.

It's rare that I do that this soon in a kid's career...but I have no hope in Mesar at all. Same thing for Kidney who will probably have played his best hockey in juniors. And Farrell.

I understand wanting and expecting some break out rookies in this small tournament but it would be nice if expectations were tempered a bit. Looking as deep into player performance in this tournament as some have is a good way to skew others perceptions of the player and to harness potential differences of opinion, which, I believe, create a full scope for a players overall abilities.

They f***ing blew it there. Big time. And it was the easiest decision move to make at that point. But some will be satisfied thinking that others missed him too. Here's my case about that...look at every player chosen before....And I see a role for each of them. If Mesar isn't top 6, he has no role with a team. The other players teams should be judged on are Bichsel, Yurov, Miro, Gauther and Rinzel. I guess that remains to be seen. But Mesar...an uphill battle to say the least.

I didn't think Mesar was that much a passenger. Looking at highlights....you never think he is. But even in Juniors..he let others dictate the play. Insane.

I don't believe in them. That's just my opinion. Typical good junior players that won't have what it takes to move forward. I usually reserve my judgment especially on younger kids like Mesar or Kidney (Farrell isn't young), but I'm not. Just my take.

Havent finished watching the game yet but I really like Reinbacher.
Slightly unrelated but I don't think it's out of line to say Reinbacher is a better prospect than Slafkovsky. I like Slaf and think he'll do good things it's just annoying we got the 1st overall in such a odd draft

Mailloux lacks hockey sense imo. Last year, in the OHL, he didn't make the smart plays but his physical skills still let him be a dominant player in junior hockey. I don't think his D can really improve because his reads are slow.
If Mailloux is as bad defensively as these fellows are saying he's probably not going to make it. Sounds like he has long way to go. Behind the curve. I never watched the game though

pretty obvious were gonna run into lack of high end talent, frustrating considering its been the problem for the last couple decades
up until Hugo, Habs somehow thought they were raising talent locally like the 60s... it's going to take close to a decade to get a proper farm system locked and loaded.

add in a few generational goalies: Roy, Price, and Hart winner Theodore, plus Halak and to an extent Huet, the Habs relied on goaltending to make them a playoff team, but never a contender.

There are several posters pumping his tires. There's maybe one of them which I truly trust on his appraisal ( @ChesterNimitz ) but would consider maybe a bit optimistic.
Here is my assessment of Mailloux’s performance against the Sabres in the first game of the Rookie Tournament, optimistically infused or otherwise. Mailloux’s play confirmed what I have been saying for months: while an intriguing prospect who displays exciting indicia of individual skills, the sum of his game is still not at an NHL level. My concerns about the state of Mailloux’s development are well documented on this forum: lack of game experience against high level competition; limited defensive acumen; poor conditioning and an absence of core strength that undermines his on ice ability to physically control opposing forwards. Those that trumpeted Maillioux’s immediate ascension to the Canadiens have not really followed this player’s development and the gaps in his game. Notwithstanding how he performs in this tournament Mailloux is at least a year from being a contributing player for the Canadiens.

As for the game against the Sabres, Mailloux’s defensive game wasn’t all that bad. He made some obvious mistakes and it was clear he was nervous as he must know that the eyes of the hockey world are on him and that some ( many) are hoping he fails. I thought as the game progressed his play became more impactful including an end to end rush and several strong offensive plays. As he gains confidence, his game will improve by a quantum level. In the game against the Bruins, ( albeit a much weaker team than the Sabres) Mailloux has been, in this writer’s opinion, the best player on the ice over the first two periods. In particular cutting off multiple Bruin offensive chances. And shooting the puck. A little bit of confidence can go a long way. He will continue to grow as a player. It will take time, but this kid projects as a key player for the Canadiens in the near future.

i am not like you. Those kind of social medias experts evaluations make me confident he will be a star for the Habs:nod:
