Prospect Info: Roman Kantserov 44th Overall

It's early on Lardis, but his skating and shot are really, really good. ...there's enough there to be some what excited.....but with some of these other recent draft picks, he might have some barriers to big club in the next couple of years.

Glad Kansterov came over for it. Helps him build some rapport with the staff and get to know guys he's going to be playing with when he comes over. Should help with his eventual transition.

yep, looks like he's NHL-bound (eventually), despite that Russians don't don't do that

He's a sleeper because he can't play internationally - Go Roman Go!

I love the onhockey.tv streaming site - it lets me watch (for free) games from all over the globe - including KHL games. I've seen Kantserov play about 10 of the 15 games he's played this season after returning from off-season surgery (he missed the first 21 games of the season). The games are broadcast in Russian so I have no idea what they're saying but it's very easy to pick out when they say "Kantserov" and they say his name a lot because he's always in on the play whether he's scoring or not.

He's come a long way since I first started watching him play at the beginning of last season when he was getting 4th line minutes. By mid-season he was on the 2nd line and by the playoffs he was playing LW on the top line. He was one of the top players leading Magnitogorsk to the Gagarin Cup championship - and he was playing through the shoulder injury that required the off-season surgery.

He's got 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points in 15 games which is the best points-per-game average on the team and one of the best in the league. But I'm equally excited about his all-around and off-the-puck game. He's quick and fast and always energized and moving. He kind of reminds me of a quicker Brandon Hagel with his nose for the puck - almost like he sees the play before it happens and is quick enough to get his stick on the puck. He's also now on the top PK unit where his quickness and anticipation play very well.

And he's doing this on a championship level team as a (just turned) 20 year old. With his KHL contract running through the 2025/26 season - he will be 21 years old with 3 full KHL seasons under his belt when he joins the Hawks for the 2026/27 season. Will he need some AHL time before joining the Hawks? Maybe, but regardless he will be a key piece of the rebuild Hawks.

Edit: He's listed at 5'9" 176lbs - but - he's fearless and engages in physical battles - in front of the net, along the boards, basically anywhere the puck is. He doesn't play "small". He's a great skater with excellent balance and rarely get's knocked down regardless the size of the opposing player.

Scott Powers just wrote in the Athletic that the Blackhawks have no intentions of trying to get him out of his contract. Oh well...

He is 100% riding out his contract. His KHL team has been great to him and relied on him in their path to the championship victory last year. He is a character kid that wouldn't burn a team that has been so kind to him. Especially to play for the hell-fire situation the Hawks are in

His goal is the NHL. The kid has said that since he was drafted. I applaud the Hawks for not trying to get him out of his contract though. Kantserov has already won a KHL championship. Has a chance at another one this year. He won't have much to prove in the KHL when he comes over anyways. And you have to hope the Hawks will be alot better next year and then the year after he comes over.

Adding him and someone like Misa or Hagens in 26/27 would be a huge boon to the forward group.

What RK has done this season is so damn impressive. A PPG pace despite not having anyone on his team anywhere near that. I don't think his game will translate as nicely as Kaprizov's or Kucherov's or Panarin's styles have, but he's still showing top line potential; just probaby not at that 'perenial All Star' level those guys are at.

@EbonyRaptor's comparison to Hagel seems about right. Blazing speed and tenacity. Smooth enough hands to maintain puck control at those speeds. B level shot. 2 inches shorter than Hagel, but around the same overall weight (at least according to their EP pages).

He'll be a real solid addition when he comes over and has PPG upside during his prime years.

Huh I don’t see Hagel at all tbh. He’s not really that fast or super physically engaged. Also Hagel is 6’2 no?

What he does have is Great lateral mobility, shifty and high end puck skills. Can get his shot off in small spaces. Offensive awareness is clearly high end. Kind of reminds me of Michkov the way he generates offense

He's absolutely that fast. I am surprised though, that Hagel is now listed at 6ft2. When he was drafted he was 5ft11, and I would've bet money that was what he was here. Potentially another case of an NHL players height inexplicably changing once they become a veteran in this league.

He's nothing like Michkov, though. MM is slow and relies on high iq. RK is much more of a North/South type that pushes the pace of play.

His scouting report

He just isnt blazing fast. Thats a fact. Unless there are clips out there that show otherwise, he's one of those guys whos fast enough to take advantage of rush scoring chances and push the pace but he wont be turnstiling guys
