Rogers Place: part II: What is the good, the bad, the ugly what to improve

Was at Rogers for the first time tonight. My father and I have shared season seats for the past 11 seasons with some other people, but tonight was the first time I was able to sit in our seats at the new arena.

We're in section 115, row 6, so a corner seat at the end where the Oilers attack twice.
First the pros: Super comfortable, and way more leg room than at Rexall. When the puck is in the close end the action is remarkable. I've never really watched much hockey up close like that. It's pretty cool seeing the players up close.

Now on to the cons, and it's a major one. And really I'm pretty disappointed with it. Because of the angle of the glass, 1/2 of the far end is completely unviewable. I'm not sure if it's glare, distortion from the angle, both or what, but it's literally impossible to see what is happening down at the other end of the ice and all the way up the close side until the closest blue line.

Not sure if my rudimentary paint skills are viewable, but if so, everything above the gray line is either distorted or completely unviewable.

There are a couple pictures I took that hopefully illustrate the issue.

I didn't expect I'd be able to see the action in the far corner just because the angle is pretty tight, and I was okay with that. But this is probably 30% of the ice that is basically unwatchable because of the distortion that the glass causes. What ended up happening is you'd have to be craning your head up to the jumbotron (which is super impressive) any time the puck was at the far end and then quickly looking back to the ice when the puck moved its way back down the ice. I mean I couldn't even see the far net clearly.

Now I've never sat in this kind of seating before (the seats at Rexall were upper bowl) and maybe this is just how trying to watch on an angle through the glass works. But wow was I let down haha. Half the game is unwatchable.

Down low is a hoot once in a while but I've found similar problems in other buildings. You end up relying on the jumbotron with the satisfaction of being close to the excitement and action when it is close by.

I sat Section 123 last row in GM Place and found some of the same stuff. I've watched games from high up in GM Place and with the lighting the action just pops. I'm hoping Rogers Place lighting has a similar affect.

This is the case in all arenas. I have been fortunate enough to watch a game in about 14 arenas, it's the same in all of then when watching up close.

I noticed this as well, and having sat in lower bowl seats at Rexall, I feel it is far worse at Roger's Place. I agree, pretty disappointing. I feel like the seats in section 113 etc are probably better angle because you look straight out, so I will plan on sitting there when I attend another game.

You are correct.
The key to having good sight lines (entire ice) while sitting low down, it to be on the goal line, or slightly behind it.
Your example of seats in the corner in section 113 should enable you to see the entire ice, whereas with section 115, half the section is behind is behind the goal line which offers a great view, but the half of it is not, which will result in some blind spots as described above.

This rule applies with each corner of the rink.

Went to my 1st hockey game in Rogers last night. Had seats on row 1 in 206. Definitely felt on top of the action which is good. Loved the scoreboard. The Ice is certainly more lit up than at Rexall. Music a bit more louder than at Rexall but also more superior. http://hfboards.mandatory.com/images/smilies/yo.gif

Seat was comfortable but leg room is poor. This is my second time at Rogers for an event and have only sat in the 200 sections but I find that both times my legs cramped up. They probably did at Rexall as well, just can't remember.

On the end I was at, there was no goal judge. There was a chair but no person. Was it because of exhibition or is there no goal judge anymore?

During the game on the scoreboard they were only trying to sell you stuff. No silly contests or shooting t-shirts into the crowd. Hopefully, its just exhibition and they will get back to this during the regular season. I'm a sucker for that stuff, it makes it fun.

Still not a fan of the escalator to heaven. I love the fact that they have them but I think they could of done something with the large one to break it up. Its an accident waiting to happen.

I'm warming up to the arena, needs some splashes of colour here or there though.

Goal judge sits in that seat for WHL. For the NHL, the goal judge is above ( or was at rexall). Everything is usually scaled back for pre-season. Event teams, on ice promotions ETC.

I didn't know that.

Not sure why they couldn't have placed this exclusive club on one side of the players walkway and on the other something for the more "common tastes".

Just seems petty for what the city tax payer has put into this building.

PS: and I didn't know you agreed that often with me, but with my sleuth abilities I can assume you are not my wife behind that avatar.

Its by design, immediately on the other side is the visiting teams quarters(separated by doors and a wall obviously). No room for anything for regular fans.

Years ago I bought tickets at Rexall in the first row in the corner of the lower bowl and had similar issues. I couldn't see anything at the other end of the ice. This was in the days before there was a Jumbotron. That option was out so you to rely on the rest of the crowd to let you in on what was happening. I never sat that low again. Only thing those seats are good for, I guess, is banging on the glass. It's unfortunate for you that you're stuck with such crappy seats now.

I sat in Sportsnet lounge on drink rail last night, was awesome.

I wish my seats in 109 had all tha food!

Anyone see the on ice video they did in Vegas last night? That was incredible! Is our rink set up to do that?

The glass also has a different look this year. Each pane has 2-3 layers of a plastic coating over it. When it gets too marked up or cut, one layer can be removed to give it a brand new pane look. Also makes the glass more durable.

They say it is, but they aren't using it for pre-season. They want to save some of the cool stuff for the home opener. It was on one of the PCL Ice Level videos, I think the one just after the first hockey game was played.

What's the deal in the Sportsnet lounge? Is it sponsored by Sportsnet? What's the price? How is the view? Seems to me it'd be a distraction from the game with all the food. I have sat in corporate boxes and I guess that's the same. You get food during breaks.

I had no input in where the seats ended up this year, but I can't imagine we'll be keeping them past this season. Either try and move, or just give them up outright. Luckily it's still a pretty fun experience and at this point we're only going to 5 or 6 games a year anyway with the rest going to other people.

It's pretty startling going from a couple rows up from the bottom rail in the upper bowl at Rexall where you could not have a better view to these seats.

The music is way too loud in the upper bowl. You should be able to talk during breaks, but it's pretty tough to hear anything when they play anything with bass. It sounds great, but it's loud.

The pitch in the upper bowl is insane, but good insane. It feels like you're sitting directly over the ice surface. Drastically different than the 300's in Rexall. Love the building, bathroom lines where a non issue. Consession prices were steep, but Rexall was steep too. Found parking easy, getting out of downtown was a breeze. All around I'm stocked about Rogers. New era.

Saw my first game at Rogers last night.

Was in row 12 of the upper bowl, but the sightlines were still great due to the steepness of the upper bowl.

The jumbotron was so massive and crystal clear. Love the digital score display.

Getting in and out was super easy. Just hopped over to a stairwell and went down to the bottom.

Food and drink prices were wack, but they were wack at Rexall too so whatever.

Overall, very impressive building and looking forward to things going ahead.

I have come across a Beer conspiracy , on your facebook and search #wherehasmybeergone , it describes with proof ( Rogers place cups) how Rogers place is short changing on every 20oz beer sold, giving the old 16Oz amount. It's very deceiving. Personally I think I it's a slap in the face .

I don't care what rink you're in. You sit down in one of the corners and far corner will be always be an issue to see. Impossible logistically to rectify. That's like sitting up in the nosebleeds and complaining you have difficulty seeing the players faces.

Buy the cans. It's tough to short change on those.

Maybe the much maligned auto displays in that exact location at Barclays arena or many European arenas is the way to go. Those are awful seats and frankly don't know why anybody buys them. That said I feel like any tickets anywhere in front half dozen seats are bad but the corners are the worst. They really should come at reduced price at least.

As is its basically preying on fans that don't have this figured out. Basically you can't see anything looking down a long wall of plexiglass. But even watching the game through plexiglass is poor optics. Theres been multiple comments about this but people saying it looks like they haven't even cleaned the plexiglass panels properly. You can even see grime, dust and dirt on those in gameplay. Ridiculous that more attention isn't paid to at least keeping them clean.

One thing that hasn't been thought about is that the extra glare at Rogers due to brighter lighting, more visual displays and a humongous jumbotron is all wreaking havoc on the glass with a lot of reflections. That won't be correctable. Any seats where you have to look through glass are just ****** seats. Could never understand wanting to sit there anyway.

Yah, I haven't been to a game yet (going on Wednesday so I can't comment on glare until then), but I wonder if the much brighter lights might be a bit of a blessing and a curse. Makes the rink look spectacular but also provides more glare on glass, etc.

Went to my first game at Rogers on Saturday and it was awesome. Used the Elevator on the North side to get up (no lineup haha). Sat just before the corner 200's. I was a little wary walking down the stairs with 2 beers but not that bad. Best view of a game I have had in my life and it wasnt even centre ice.

Went with the Molson tall boys for about $11 because the lines were the shortest. Bathrooms were a non issue for me. It did seem people didn't know where the bathrooms were because the one on the west side never had a lineup but the one on the north side did.

I really want to try the SN seats because the amount I spent for my seat and beer ended up being the same price anyways.

We left using the stairs and it was so fast so if you are able that's the way to go.

I do believe higher rows in the lower bowls are more expensive than the lower rows (besides row 1).
