Ok, this one I'm struggling with.

If you know the answer, help me to understand.
Ask and you shall recieve.Regehr is twice the defenseman McCabe is.

I'm a Leafs fan and there is no way I'd have McCabe on an Olympic roster over Regehr.

McCabe makes me too nervous. You'd have to put him on there exclusively for power plays, and Canada has more than enough power play quarterbacks as it is.

Canada's defensemen are all about punishing and shutting down opposing forwards, and then SECONDARILY adding to the offense. McCabe does not fit that description.

He's great on the Leafs, but we could sure use a "boring" defenseman like Robyn Regehr.

I'll help

McCabe is a major defensive liability. He averages 28:26 minutes of ice-time on a team that allows 3.36 goals per game. Not exactly flattering defensive numbers.

Seriously, do people watch hockey anymore or do they just look at "Oh hey he's got alot of points he should be on"...

I assume you mean the "stay at home" elements, because clearly his scoring pales in comparison.

One thing Team Canada does not lack is scoring punch from its forwards. They will not need a defenseman to score many points here.

The "stay at home" elements you speak of are at the end of the day MORE important for a defenseman than the offensive aspects.

The guy McCabe should be compared to is Rob Blake, who has had all of McCabe's defensive problems this season and then some, without the offensive contribution.

McCabe was only named to the taxi squad so people wouldn't complain. He doesn't even deserve to be there over a couple other guys.

Right, because a lot of points are a bad thing.

I've watched maybe 6 Calgary games this season, and was always more impressed with Phaneuf. I've watched maybe 12 or so Toronto games (including most of the Ottawa battles) and saw McCabe get burned a few times (but not as bad as the descriptions I'm hearing in here)and score like a forward on the PP.

Pronger, Scott Niedermayer and Foote all seem more than capable enough defensive rearguards. Jovanovski is another name I could have titled the thread as contested, he's just as much of not more of a liability than McCabe, but scores less.

Much better on defense although I would have agreed with Phaneuf making the team.

Jovo has plenty of international experience, which Gretzky places a lot of stock in.

I'm not pimping Ed Jovanovski, I'm just saying why he was selected.

Phaneuf is a rookie, and as good as he is, Team Canada is not going to put a rookie in the Olympics. No way in hell.

Regehr is the type of defenseman Team Canada loves.

You assume correctly sir.And even with MCCabe's better offense,Regehr is still twice the d-man Bryan is.

Exactly.Well put.

Give me a break guys. Regehr and McCabe have NOTHING in common, they are completely different players. If you're going to ***** and moan about McCabe being snubbed you should be looking at Jovanovski, because has way more in common with McCabe and all his defensive gaffes.

Better get used to Regehr, he's going to be filling Foote's shoes soon enough. He's one of the most physically dominating defenceman in the NHL, period.

Need some help understanding this decision? Learn some hockey first...

Let's hear those names. You've been adamant about McCabe's selection to the taxi squad being a poor one - so let's hear those names.

Robyn Regehr is a better defenseman than Bryan McCabe by a fair margin.

Bryan McCabe is not as bad defensively as many on HF would have us believe however. It's just the latest excuse to denounce McCabe's strong play (over the years we've gone through - "use of can opener", "last year was a fluke" {referring to 03-04 season}, "won't be successful in the new NHL")

McCabe is worse defensively than Jovo, but scores more on the powerplay.

Jovo plays with bigtime fire, and provides a physical element mccabe can'tmatch.

Jovo played really well in the gold medal game at the olympics last time. REALLY well.

While I don't disagree with your initial point, you post does make me wish HFBoards had a filter that would allow me to ignore any post with the phrase "Learn some hockey first" or variants thereof. :shakehead

As someone who watched Regehr totally shut down my team in the Western Conf. Finals last season, I will regretfully agree

Regehr >>> McCabe

Yes, I have Centre Ice, and have seen my fair share of Leafs games.

Regehr made the team because he planted Crosby face-first into the end boards!

Games will be played on olympic ice though.
Last year McCabe was nothing short of brutal on the big ice in Sweden. In fact, he was gonna be benched because he was so bad. He got mad and took off before it happened.

For that same reason, makes be wonder why Doan was selected. The guy looked like a pylon at the last WC.

C'mon, McCabes year in Europe is a wash. If you notice his career, he goes good year, bad year, good year, bad year, good year, bad year.

Thank God the lockout just happened to be his bad year.
