Rob Blake and TOR GM rumors

I'm sure the Leafs will get Blake just like they were supposed to sign him as a UFA in 2001. Then they'll hire Gretzky, just like they were supposed to get him in '96. That organization from the owners on down is a joke.

They already have a 1 billion dollar contract waiting for Stamkos to sign.

As for Blake, there's no way he leaves Cali, there's no surf in Toronto last time I checked.

Yeah, honestly I'm sort of perplexed why Toronto would be interested in Blake, other than he and Shanahan supposedly had a good working relationship in the league office. He only has one year of front-office experience. Toronto really needs to stop messing around and hire top-caliber people.

I've seen Futa mentioned on the Leafs boards too, and that's more concerning (I posted on their board for Toronto to "keep their grubby paws off" him). But I imagine if it happens it would be more or less like the Hextall situation: the organization feels he deserves to take the next step but there's no opening (i.e. Lombardi isn't going anywhere for awhile).

I'm not so much concerned about Futa, because there were discussions last year about Futa becoming the GM of another team, and Lombardi refused to let that team speak with him, because they were already giving Futa a promotion.

Edit: I think that team was Vancouver?

It was Buffalo, and iirc, Futa is from that area.

Just reading the prior posts here, those made me think:

If Rob Blake were to...

Become GM of the LA Kings
--he'd receive accusations of getting the GM job via some purported "Good Old Boys Club", paralleling how Jim Buss got his via family connections.

Become GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs
--I won't find it hard to believe if he'd get paralleled to Isiah Thomas, especially when NY media is rather vicious towards the Knicks and Toronto media towards the Maple Leafs.

Stay as is in his current position
--he receives further job training and earns himself further legitimacy as a potential GM for future reference.

I'm being objective about this.

On a more serious note compared to my last post, if it comes down to Futa or Blake I'd keep Futa easily. I would even go as far to say that he has potential to take over when Dean steps down.

I saw that. There's a reason why his name is brought up every offseason for what seems to be every GM vacancy.

There's a reason the Kings promoted Futa and Stevens last off season, and likely gave them nice raises. Not saying that either one couldn't be enticed to leave, but the Kings are doing everything they can to show those two guys that they are a big part of their future plans.

Because of what Toronto appears to be doing in that the GM won't really be running the team but will be part of a group running the team. Someone like Futa isn't probably going to want to go.

Losing someone like Futa would be a huge loss. He's been one of the main reasons the Kings keep pumping great prospects through the minors. Rob Blake wouldn't be a huge loss, kind of like Hextall wasn't that big of a loss.

Futa is from Toronto and grew up a huge leaf fan. No one knows who Shanahan wants but Futa seems to make more sense than Blake

If Shanny is smart he gets a GM experienced in doing a rebuild and a head coach that can take the flak away from the players with the media. Mike Gillis makes sense GM wise, someone like Pat Quinn for the coach. Tom Renney maybe?

Whoever they bring in is a stop gap, so performance only matter so much. It's about developing the culture and ensuring kids are brought along properly.

Yup, I was very happy with that last year.

tom Renney now has a big role with hockey canada. He will not be a coach as long as he is in his current role.

I think it's too soon to say hextall wasn't a big loss.
but I agree from an outsider I do not think losing Blake would be a big deal

Is he going to coach from beyond the grave? Quinn passed away last November.

Yeah, I know that....

I was giving an example from Toronto. That'd be why I didn't suggest Quinn but instead suggested Renney.

Renney is president and CEO of hockey Canada. No chance he leaves that role before the next Olympics at a minimum.

One thing - if Toronto does ever turn it around and win a cup, their fans would be so numerous and insufferable that fans of other teams would absolutely pine for the days when the Kings - or anyone else for that matter - were on top.

Terry Murray would be perfect for Edmonton and Toronto. Two teams like the Kings that were terrible defensively and needed that sort of structure to turn the franchises around.

Kessel would hate him. He'd never crack 40 goals again having to be defensively responsible.

Kessel is probably gone this summer anyways. But that is exactly why those teams need a TM. Their offensive players are not held accountable for their lack of effort on defense.
