Value of: Ristolainen @ 50% to EDM

Risto still has 2 more years on his deal @5.1m after this season.

He doesn't hold much value even with retention and I doubt Flyers want to commit a retention spot for years on him for some nothing return.

Why do I care? He was also the worst dman in the league at that time. The OP is asking about his value now, not when it was in Buffalo. He put up a bunch of points playing with Eichel on the PP. Still not who he is now.
Just saying he has offensive potential unless if that just disappeared

As much as I want the Flyers to move on from him, I don’t see the fit for Edmonton. Maybe they retain for 2 years if they’re getting a 1st back, but we also have the Oilers’ 1st for this year. Not sure what their prospect pool looks like - any decent B prospects in Edmonton?

If the Oil are targeting a RHD with term that they want to pay additional assets to get 50% retention, I prefer the target be Connor Murphy.

That might be an option, but it looks like they want a defenseman with more offensive potential. Someone who can make a good outlet pass or skate the puck out of the d-zone.

I would prefer a Larsson type myself, but that doesn't seem to be on Bowman's shopping list.

I don’t see the Flyers retaining 2.5M for 3 years without being properly compensated.
Ridding themselves of a player who has spent the bulk of the last 5 years being awful is the compensation. Nobody is taking Ristolainen at full cap hit. If the Flyers don't want to retain salary to move him because of the length of the deal, then they can enjoy his services for another year or two.

I don't expect the Oilers to have interest in Ristolainen because of the length of his deal. I expect they want expiring contracts so they have enough for the McDavid and Bouchard extensions without paying teams to take contracts off of their hands.

The retention is necessary because Ristolainen is so overpaid. You aren't getting extra assets for retaining on a guy who is overpaid on his contract by 50% at least.

Dude, read it. I don't want him. I feel Bowman is going to make a mistake and trade for him. I was asking what HF thinks that trade would look like.
I’m not trying to give you a hard time but risto is not good at all idk why fans even entertain him being on the team. And he’s a great guy irl I’m not hating on him but yeah he is not good at the whole hockey thing (and is grossly overpaid.

He has 6 points and a -1, lol. I wouldn't take him at free for 50%, never mind give up assets for him.
You show a lack of knowledge. 6 points you use ? Yeah ok
. Makar is -1. He sucks too right lol
Josi is -13. He also sucks right lol
Risto is -1 on a team thats often a train wreck. How do I know, I watch or go to every game. He was god last year as well. Hockey people that scout him know this, occasional fans don't

Risto isn't the type that can get away with not producing.....if he's not producing he's total and utter garbage. He's proved over and over again that he can't sustain any kind of smart play over a season.

I feel as though this is the kind of trade Edmonton is going to commit to soon. I don't think Risto is the piece they need on the right side and they can't afford to get him at his full salary.

So as the wrong guy for too much $$$ it seems like the inevitable move Bowman is going to make,

What would be fair value?
According to Daily Faceoff NHL insider Anthony Di Marco, “The play of Ristolainen this season has elevated him in the eyes of the Flyers, and it sounds like the asking price for the hulking rearguard will be a first-round selection or value-equivalent.”

Now I am not saying they will get the first unless they take a really bad contract back.

But never overestimate the intelligence of nhl gm's when it comes to physical d-men.

Thanks for that, I appreciate the insight.

A few fans have spoken highly of Risto's play lately. He isn't the guy I would want the Oilers to target, but I don't think this team has any real plan or agenda to make the improvements they need to.

To be clear I would drive risto to edm personally for a 1st and a bad ry-jo type of deal.

Its more like a 2+, bad contract for Risto.

But hockey gms are galactically stupid over physical d-men. I wouldn't want my gm to overpay for Risto like Up Chuck Flusher. But some nit wit for sure will.

EDM first would be crazy risky. If they give that, then it has to be 2026, as the Flyers already have their 2025 1st. That makes the 2025 1st unprotected.

Im going back to Sabres days, but Risto was pretty useless defensively. Has that changed? Sounds like the opposite of what the Oilers needs, but also something theyd do, so sure.

He’s not worth a 1st. Nor was Sean Walker last year despite Philly fans insisting he was. Risto is worse than Walker.

And don’t come at me like Walker returned a 1st, the cap dump involved made it more like a 2nd-3rd.

Risto is a big RHD who hits. GMs love that shit even if he sucks.

Thing is...hes actually playing well this year like Walker did last year. I think a 1st is possible.

That said, Flyers prob wont trade him and will extend him when the time comes bc yeah.

Like Walker last year. I doubt Phillly keeps him. They still have their eye on the future.

They do...but they also fall in love with players who play "flyers hockey". Trading Walker was pretty uncharacteristic. They couldve easilly moved Seeler at the TDL but extended him 4 years instead. Laughton has drawn interest for years but Briere refuses to trade him. Hathaway couldve been another decent tdl piece this year but was resigned. All of these guys 30 or pushing it.

Im not sure where Risto fits but Jones loves him and the coaching staff seem to aswell.

As colorful as his history has been, Ristoleinen has been playing well and the Flyers aren't going to retain much, if at all, to trade him right now. They're more likely to welcome a spot of nice play from him this season and keep him.

They're thin enough back there and rely on him to carry a lot of water during the rebuild. Moving him creates a huge hole on their blueline. Lots of youth; not a lot of veteran experience. He and Sanheim are it.

Yeh I remember them keeping Seeler cause he was “Flyers Material”. I just never thought Risto would be put in that same category though. Maybe things changed this year, but Risto was a bit of a project last year i thought.
