Damn.
He did a lot of good for the organization. I remember him saying that on his first day he found out Craig Patrick didn’t even have a computer in his office.
RIP and thanks for 2009. One of the greatest memories of my life.
Maybe this thread isn't the right place to talk about his tenure, but maybe it is.
Looking back, as someone who wrote a lot complaining about him back in the day there is an extent to which I think we held him to a standard of perfection that maybe wasn't fair. He made mistakes but even in the things we criticized him harshly for (like drafting) I think history has absolved him quite a bit.
There are three reasons he didn't win more than one Cup in Pittsburgh: injuries, goaltending, and coaching. He couldn't control one, he could barely control the second, and ultimately the third probably was the reason a change took place. If Fleury was even serviceable in 2010 and 2012, we probably make the Final and maybe even win. If Crosby and/or Malkin aren't hurt, we probably make a deep run in 2011. If Bylsma was a bit better, probably make the Final and maybe even win in 2013 and 2014.
The back-to-back Cups exposed the flaws in his team-building strategy - too many low-event grinders in the bottom six, not enough speed, not enough youth - but they also showed that he built a shockingly serviceable prospect core that ultimately addressed all three. Dumoulin, Guentzel, Maatta, Rust, Blueger, Kunhackl, Wilson, Archibald, Sundqvist, and of course Murray. We loathed him for not finding Crosby a winger and it turned out that he'd drafted his perfect winger in the 3rd round in 2013.
He built a Cup winner in 2009 and frankly built a team that could have won in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. In Shero We Trust
I think with Toews instead of Staal, that team probably wins 4 or 5 depending on how long they could’ve kept the 3 together.RIP Ray
Still think he should have picked Toews over Staal in 06 and Filip Forsberg over Derek Pouliot in 2013.
Shero probably saves his job if he moves on from Bylsma. Because the rest of his work was hard to argue against. His drafting was excellent even as he utilized assets for big swings. He tried to fix the goaltending with deals like the one for Vokoun.Shero was a victim of his early success.
People were always upset that Chicago had more success than us, but their window was effectively 5-6 years and they just happened to win 3 cups in that span.
The Penguins largely due to Shero were contenders for the majority of Sid and Malkin's tenure.
JR won the two cups, but did nothing to prolong the success due to piss poor drafting and terrible asset management.. Hextall and Dubas similarly had issues as well.
Yeah, legit shocked.Woah what?! That's hella young. RIP and my thoughts are with his friends and family.
Shoutout to Pitthockey22 if he ever is lurking again. Assuming he was Ray’s son I wish the family all the best. Both the Hossa and Iginla trades were steals for Shero. Thanks again for all you did for the Pittsburgh Penguins. RIP.
Does it? but even Sullivan was there who was not around at the time.
Explains the after game meeting. RIP.
