I meant, big bodies with skills is what Habs need. Habs teams in the past had that component. Size and skills.
We need skill and size for sure, but it’s a rare commodity. Most of the best players in the league are “average” size, which is why there is so much premium put on that bigger guy that can play. But even Batherson, he was drafted as an overager who had a tremendous upward trajectory. There’s little doubt that scouting team in Ottawa has done a tremendous job the last 5-6 years.

It will be interesting to see where the game goes, in the playoffs and going forward.

This year the rules were heavily enforced and the game was wide open - and scoring was way up. A lot of small players like Caufield and Kaprizov were able to excel without their size being a hindrance.

We'll see if that trendcontinues, or not.

I am not asking for 12 forwards over 6'2.... But certainly not having 6-7 forwards under 5'10

True. I just wouldn't miss out on the next Gaudreau, Kaprizov, or Jack Hughes in order to draft the next big center a la Kotkaniemi.

How does that happen to a player who is on the cusp of recording 100 points?

I'd say that Joshua Roy is grabbing headlines around the Habs community more (he was more noticeable during training camp, had the strong WJC camp, is a local talent and producing more than Kidney).

Outside of Habs land? I really don't know. If he was a Leafs prospect I feel like they would talk about him every intermission on Sportsnet.

There is none of this coming draft. Gaudreau and Kaprisov have been taken in later rounds

The impact Kidney has on his team is much more noticeable than Roy as he is more of a playmaker while Roy is more the shooter type similar to Dufour in Saint-John.
Roy with Kidney would dominate more than he does now....this is why I see a Suzuki parallel in Kidney.
Now we do not need TSN to evaluate junior players when we have watched it for 25 years....and we don't need some who haven't even seen the players play to dispute our opinions.
It reminds me of Isles' fans disputing that Dobson would be the big deal; now he is at 48 points and with 21 minutes icetime per game for them at 22 YO.

It is an easier to attain commodity when you're picking early in the draft, like we are. Esp. when that commodity could also be the BPA.
Except in my opinion Slafkovsky isn’t BPA at #4.

The two C’s and two D’s are BPA before him, and you could make an honest case for Nazar, Kemell and Savoie.

Yeah for me BPA is irrelevant after 2 cause it's fairly even but at the same time, if they don't draft 1/2, they have a chance at landing that coveted no.1 D. Imo, those are the four players Habs should be looking at taking

100%.

D-men also take a bit of time, traditionally. So drafting a Jiricek or Nemec today might only start to pay dividends in 4-5 years. It makes perfect sense to grab a great D in this years draft if you aren’t picking #1-2

They re no Makar or Seider or Heiskinen or Power. Habs need good skilled productive forwards.

Wright, Cooley or Slaf. No one else, please.

I don’t know what to make of Slafkovsky — I’ve seen differing opinions in here.

If you want a productive forward than don’t take Slafkovsky.

Big body, yes. He’s not exactly lighting Liiga on fire in comparison to previous top picks that played in Liiga in their draft year. That’s a huge red flag to me.

Slaf is where he is on the rankings because of the big body and the idea of what he could be.

That was an echo-chamber effect that went rampant on HF and clouded everyone’s judgement.

The amount of “power” guys selected early in the draft that have panned out are few and far between.

Not exactly but I get your point. Tkachuk was always known for having an extremely edgy game, lots of intangibles, etc. Slaf is much less of a sure thing going into the draft than Tkachuk was regardless of where you project(ed) them

Tkachuk also has the bloodlines.

My concern with Slaf is if he just ends up being a big body that scores 30-40pts, great.. but that’s not what I want out of a Top-5 pick.

I just don’t see enough sample size to get really excited about his upside

Agreed. Never was high on Slaf. People got super hyped from a 7 game sample in a neutered Olympic Games. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he drops outside the top 5

Was surprised how many teams passed on Dobson at the draft, including our current GM who went off board for the Russian over Dobson, Bouchard, and Wahlstrom...

I really have Hope's for Roy and Kidney. And if they both make it, they we be perfect fits together on a 2nd line - perhaps with Sean Farrell. We just have to wait and see...really looking forward to camp this September, but especially in September 2023. Roy, Kidney, amd Farrell could all have monster years next year.
