You just placed a top 30 dman as your #3 and two top 4 dmen as your 3rd pairing. If you can find 2 dmen better than Rielly plus add Pesce/Montour/Skjei, then you'd easily have the best defense core in the NHL and it's really a very unrealistic ask.

To put it into perspective, you're putting more than 8m worth of defense talent as a 3rd pairing (re-signing McCabe right now would cost a lot more than what we are paying).
Marner for Theodore + package gets you your better than rielly player

Montour/pesce/skeji is your 2nd pairing player who can play big minutes

Rielly is still #2D but he is behind Theodore in this scenerio

Theodore (5.5M) - Skeji/Montour (7M)
Rielly (7.5M) - XXX (Zadorov or Roy - 5M)
McCabe (2M) - Tanev (3M)

Benoit is #7D who can play/rotate with Tanev

The top6D are at 30M

Giordano is 40. He stunk this year but was good last year. Tanev hasn’t even turned 35 yet and we’d only be looking for 4 years out of him probably which he’s perfectly capable of giving. The rest of the years just artificially lower his AAV. That’s it.

Tanev is still a very good defender and a clear top 4 and there’s no reason to assume he won’t be for a while still.

Some stability with Rielly would be so welcomed.

With a $100M cap basically 2 years away. $3-3.5M is going to be bottom pairing money in short order.
if your building a good d core rielly shouldnt be your 1D

Acquire a better D via marner trade

Rielly as #2D
Skeji/Montour #3D
Roy/Carrier/Zadorv #4D
McCabe #5D
Tanev #6D
Benoit #7D

That is a top 3D league wide, and that is what we will need to win

Marner has to go, he cant be a leaf if we want to build our defense and build a team capable of competing for a cup

Still short a legit #1 D man and not good enough # 3 and 4.
Maybe, but it is improved and getting a #1 is easier said than done. We might have to build with 3 or 4 numbers twos? Rielly and Skjei are a start.

Also, serious question here...how many teams have a legit #1 and a deep top four?

Spread a lower AAV over a longer term and put him on LTIR once he loses his effectiveness. This is the first move of many and he’s a solid top four defender who won’t need to be paid like one. Wait to see what he’s being paid and what other UFA dmen get before judging this move by Tre.

I don’t understand this move at all. We really going to rely on a 35 year old to log real minutes?

The fact he’s almost 35 doesn’t make him bad. He’s still one of the best defensive defensemen in the entire NHL even at his advanced age. He also doesn’t handle the puck like a grenade. He can absolutely help this team for another 3-4 years if his body holds up, and if it doesn’t his cap hit won’t matter.

Tanev is still a legit top 4D. You can disagree but you’d be wrong.

We don’t need anyone better than Rielly to win. Rielly is a #1 D. The problem is we’ve surrounded him with spare parts his entire career. Get players of appropriate quality to actually help and compliment him. And because he’s more of an average 1D than a high end one, you do need someone else who is close to his level, someone like Skjei would be a good example

You need to read the implications of having someone on LTIR for multiple years before you plan on signing someone with the intent to put them on it for 3 years.

Why do people care so much if this is a long term deal? He’s got 2-3 years left in him , we can worry about it after that .
That's what people said about Tavares and yet some people have been complaining about him for the past few seasons even though he's still a pretty decent player who hasn't dropped off nearly as far as many expected him to by now. If Tanev drops off early or doesn't play nearly as well as we hope he does, there's going to be a firestorm coming.

having tanev on bottom pairing shows how deep our defense core would be

Sure he can be a #4D still

But why would we want him to play their if we can add Montour/Skeji & Roy/Zadorov(interchangable with Tanev moving forward imo)

A marner for Weegar + or Theodore+ type of trade lets us have the best d-core in leafs 100 year history if we can hit on on UFA deals

Knies - Matthews - Domi (4x4)

Teravinen (5M x 4) - JT - Nylander

Tomasino (1M x 2 via Lilijgren deal) - Wennberg (2.5M x 3) - Robertson

Holmberg - Kampf - McMann

D-core

Weegar/Theodore - Montour (6.25 x 7)
Rielly - Roy (5M x 4)
McCabe - Tanev (3.25M X 6)

Woll
Storlaz (2M x 2)

We can severly upgrade the dcore, while getting a strong offense led by 88 and 34 if we move Marner. If no marner move, you have tanev being tried as our 1RD and that will quickly go to shit

Treliving is pulling a sleepy Joe impression

Timmins, Jarnkrok, and Dewar should have been dealt for 3rds to 6th rounders at the draft to create space and accumulate picks

Marner needs to be gone July 1st at latest otherwise no deal is happening there

We are sitting on our ass making a 3rd rate move for Tanev when we need a lot more to be done to become a team that can win the cup

I mean it's pretty obvious they're trying to get the cap hit as low as possible and then they probably dont expect him to count against the cap later on. The negative comments are pretty weird.

Juice the 2-3 years or so he has left. Pretty smart move. Even if you don't like him, it's factual he will outplay his cap hit for at least 2 years.

Yep. Probably a good deal longer than 2 years with a significantly rising cap.

-"Let's trade Mitch so we can sign some UFA dmen"
-"Good idea. Let's get Tanev"
-"No, too old"
-"Ok, let's get Zadorov, he's young"
-"No, he'll be overpaid"
-"K, let's get Sjkei or Montour"
-"No, these are the top 2 dmen on the market, the bidding war will be nuts"
-"Pesce?"
-"He has a deal with NJ"
-"So...Roy?"
-"The 2nd best RHD on the market? Won't be cheap..."

if it was up to me Roy and Skjei would be my top 2 targets willing to spend somewhere in the 12-13 million range for both
