Right-handed D in need, who is the right guy?

I’ll be interested in seeing how many of these players actually get traded. When teams have really good right shot defenceman it’s very rare they get traded. I think it’s very important to Montreal’s rebuild that a player like Reinbacher finds success and can be a top 4 defenceman.

Currently 18 of the top 50 scorers for defenceman are right shot and 122 of the 291 (41.9%) of the defencemen who’ve played at least one game in the NHL are right shot.

Going with the opinion of some others who say Andersson will be a top pair D for us. We wait until after July 1 and see if the Flames extend him right away. If not , make an offer. Need to have a talk about an extension. We then move Matheson. Hutson and Andersson are 1st pair, Guhle and Carrier 2nd and the best of the rest for last pair. I don't want to move Reinbacher for Andersson though.

Or we go after Nemec now , if he's got top pair potential. Maybe Calgary 1st ( pick likely not priority for them ), Evans, Anderson retained and Mailloux. So we keep Matheson on top pair with Hutson, Guhle and Carrier 2nd pair and Xhekaj and Nemec 3rd pair as Savard is traded. Cross fingers either of Nemec or Reinbacher can be top pair in 2 years. Then other guy is then paired with Guhle, Carrier leaves or is on bottom pair.

Or we stay with current line up and hopefully Reinbacher is a top pair D.

Or be open to whatever else comes along and seize opportunity.

Not at all, Nemec played 60 games in NHL last season in top4 role as 19y old. Mailloux might never get there.

Yeah, and Nemec was sent to AHL this year because they can't have him learn on the job in the NHL... which is the exact same thing we are doing with Mailloux.

It's easy to look at where they were drafted. But after they turn pro, you can get a lot of signs on their track. If Nemec was as good as you think, he would have not had his job stolen by Kova. Nemec is on the needs time to develop train.

Brookmark it. Where are both players at when they touch age 23+. I do still like Nemec because I think he is better defensively than Mailloux but Mailloux has just as much or more offensive ability. My gut today says there is not a massive gap between these two. We will see how that ages. It's going to come down to how quickly either of them can show trust in the D zone. That is the hardest part to learn

Last year Neme was better than Luke Hughes in almost every defensive metric.
He was injured and Kovy had stronv start (5pts in 7GP). They sent him to AHL because he needs to play, not because he cannot play in NHL.

I understand the context with Nemec. You won't bring up anything I already don't know with how the Devils are managing their D and want Nemec playing big min's in the AHL.

However, there is no way of knowing how good Nemec will be. Same with Mailloux. Yeah, one was drafted #2 and the other was 31st. Of course I would pick Nemec over Mailloux but do I think the gap is massive today? NO, I really don't. Habs are managing Mailloux the same way. We want him playing big min's in the AHL.

The real unknown is how long either player shows ability to be trusted in their own zone. I really do think Mailloux has more offensive ability but Nemec is more well rounded. I would give Nemec a 75% chance at making top 4D level and Mailloux around 50%. That kind of gap

Just like the Habs could not afford to have both Xhekaj and Barron on the same 3rd pairing, the Devils could not afford to have both Hughes and Nemec on the same pairing (learning on the job). Even if Nemec was better than Hughes defensively.

Good research ! But we see how important it was to pick Reinbacher. RD who can play 22 minutes by game are close to impossible to find
Thanks, Reinbacher is such unique profile. We will admire the pick in few years, hopefully he stays healthy.

Schneider is the ideal candidate among those listed but the Rangers aren't moving him.

Ditto for Andersson, long shot at best and costly through trade.

The best stop gap in that group, IMO, is Perbix this offseason but even he'll probably be priced out of our range.
If Calgary is committed to rebuild they might be interested in their 1st back.

I doubt Clarke would be the one traded. But if he is not, Spence might be the one disponible. He could be an interesting target.

But my no. 1 and no.2 targets would be Andersson and Nemec.

I agree but we need one more.
Matheson needs to go but that will happen next year. I'm not sure what happens with Savard. Carriere has been great.
