Rick Tocchet not returning to the Canucks

Not a surprise in the slightest...surprised it was dragged on this long. Suddenly not a very desirable gig.

This news isn't exactly out of left field. It's been speculated for a while that he might leave. With more and more coaching vacancies, and given the not-so-stellar season the Canucks just had, there very well may be more attractive options for Tocchet at the moment. And he should be getting big contract offers I'd imagine.
Tocchet had an option year that Van could have exercised but veteran HC rarely go into the last year. Which is what he would be doing on this option.

He’s decided to move on.

Up to 9 HC changes. We had like 10/11 from last season.

Overrated coach anyway.
I thought it was only the hockey world that overrate him and not necessarily hockey fans, but juding by a lot of the reactions in this thread and people laughing at Vancouver because he wants to leave, maybe they like him a whole lot too.

Or they just hate the Canucks and are enjoying their misery?

Who cares? He sucks as a head coach anyway.

Not sure why people love him so much. One playoff berth in a season that wasn't abruptly halted by a pandemic.
Frankly, I think it's pretty much irrelevant to Vancouver fans whether or not he's a good coach. There are far bigger things at stake here. What kind of a message does this send to the fanbase, if Tocchet doesn't want to come back? What kind of a message does it send to Quinn Hughes?

Both!

But in all seriousness, once Torts was fired, this one was a pretty obvious probably.

When you have an owner OBSESSED with building $100 million homes all the globe instead of building a franking practice facility you’re going to have a revolving door of talent and coaching leaving

I don't blame him. He see's the highest paid player there does not have the will or fire to be better (Petey). It's a lost cause. Quinn will be gone soon. It's all downhill from here.

I don't get it, is the implication that they don't wanna pay Tocchet his contract ask?

This seems more like Tocchet flat out wanting to be somewhere else.
Vancouver Canucks is one of two NHL teams that don't have a practice facility. Calgary Flames is the other one, and they are building one with the new arena.

And Friedman said in 32 thoughts that this was actually one of the sticking points for Tocchet.

Remember what Hughes said

"He is the best coach I have ever had"

They had a closer relationship than normal. I would start dangling Hughes now and get a haul. Re-tool.

Does a head coach with Tocchet's resume actually deserve to be paid anything more than ''Cheaply'' relative to other head coaches around the league?
Who gives a f*** what the coaches make? There's no salary cap for him.

Your inability to see the forest from the trees in this instance is kinda funny. How good of coach Tocchet is matters f*** all, losing him is a disaster for the Canucks when it comes to optics.

I don't know that he left because he didn't like the Canucks or wanna be there, as much as he wanted to be in Philly more than he wanted to be in Vancouver.

I honestly think he'll have more job security in Philly right now. Say he stuck around for one more year and the Canucks missed the playoffs again, does Tocchet come back for 26-27? I don't think so.

I think if the Flyers miss the playoffs next year then Tocchet is almost definitely safe. Maybe even the next two years.

And maybe he just likes Philly more than Vancouver and that's where he wants to be. There's been smoke about Philly being interested ever since they fired AV, but then they brought in Torts that offseason and Tocchet continued to do studio work for TNT, until the Canucks hired him halfway into the next season.

Will Van go cheap (promote Malholtra) or spend big bucks on Sullivan? With their owner, I’m guessing cheap.

You can't imagine how desperate Flyers management were to get their boy back home. Especially after they spent three years lavishing praise on Torts to curry favor with old guard fans, only to summarily fire him when the fossil publicly admitted he was too lazy to do his job anymore.

Briere and the boys are backing up the Brinks truck as we speak.

Yep, exactly. I called it on the Canucks board and was derided by some. When your buddies call you, with a blank check, for a job, you gotta go.

Now Rutherford can hire Sullivan and Pittsburgh West will be complete.
