Rick Tocchet not returning to the Canucks

Must be the frustration of no practice facility. But I think one big thing here was the explosion between Miller and Pettersson. Also, Quinn potentially being gone is another big factor which could set them back.

I mean not overly surprising, perhaps one of the least desirable coaching jobs in the league, if not #1. Captain and face of the franchise is growing impatient (publicly admitted by Rutherford), supposed star #1 C signed for 11.6 million long term and then got Monstarred and is becoming increasingly unlikable basically every time he answers a question, loud and sometimes obnoxious media + fanbase, meddling idiot of an owner... if Vancouver wasn't one of the best cities to be a millionaire in they might fold the team lmao

With Bedard, Mckenna and Celibrini in the league, it is not a huge concern if it becomes the norm for players to go where they want.

The amount of people trolling from other franchises (notably the Oilers) in this thread is more than even the usual amount. Dunno if they think that reflects well on them or something but it surely doesnt. (not saying all of them are troll posts but many many are).

As for Tocchet he was a fairly overrated coach. People keep saying PDO but refuse to go look at what actually changed in the PDO year to year. The biggest change was going from a top save percent in the league to dead last for the majority of the year. Shooting percent went from the top to above average, and they certainly could have still won with that. Demko giving Vezina calibre goaltending covered up a lot of deficiencies in that team that then were exposed when he missed more or less this entire season (had stints back but never long enough to get into a rhythm).

Big part of the picture is Ian Clark stepping back too. Canucks used 3 different goalies in the playoffs last year and had amazing results with all three and for years have had every goalie step in and do well. Last year without Ian Clark it just wasnt nearly as good and that will continue to be a problem. Tocchet couldnt get a team with one of the best offensive and possession players in the league to consistently create chances. The on ice impact for Hughes compared to when he isnt there is staggering, but none of that was Tocchet it was all Quinn Hughes. Tocchet also really didnt help the Petey/Miller situation, in fact he made it worse multiple times by commenting on it openly (him and Rutherford).

As for whether its a good thing hes gone, that isnt an easy question since it comes down to who of the available coaches would want to try to take on the Canucks job when the chance to coach Sid or the NYR is available. I have faith in management to bring in another center and make good moves, theyve consistently done so every year and have some money to work with now, but in all likelihood we end up with either a coach on their first job or someone we dont want (or id not be excited for). Im fairly optimistic for next year, especially if Demko is healthy, but a lot depends on who replaced Tocchet and what moves they make for sure.

Except the team isn't in the basement. And has Hughs Hronek, D Petey, Mancini and Willander on the back end.
I’m glad you still have a positive mindset. I’d ask you to look at your roster construction and think if it looks good? I wouldn’t be surprised if Calgary and Seattle beat Vancouver next year with that team.

It wouldn't be the first time the haters got in over their skiis. The defense and goaltending are more than just good. The Canucks have 14 million in cap space to address the loss of Miller.

Remember how people were ready to write off Keller in Arizona? Then Tocchet got lost and he had a career year in Utah. That should be music to Petey’s ears.

On the other hand, Quinn seemed to really enjoy having Tocchet as a coach. Combine that with Rutherford’s foot-in-mouth moment at the press conference and it might be the beginning of the end of his time in Vancouver.

Quinn definitely likes Tocchet, wouldnt dispute that, but I think the whole Hughes is already gone narrative is Canuck fan doomerism more than reality. Same thing they did with Pettersson after his interview back home. Hughes also vouched for Boudreau and hes never made a public statement that made it seem like he wanted out (and hes the captain of the team). If the team is an utter mess next year then I could totally see him wanting to play his prime elsewhere but as of right now I dont see him as the type of player that is focused on that. Hughes seems like the type of player that will buy in with any coach really.

The Quinn Hughes stuff seems more like a self fulfilling prophecy right now in that the entire fan base and media is going to pester him about if hes staying or not for the forseeable future and overreact to everything he says.

Rutherford needs to stop talking though, he only ever puts his foot in his mouth.

With the cap rising, $14 million will get the Canucks a couple of 50 point wingers like Debrusk.

Hard to imagine that being enough.

This exactly. It is hard to believe that he made it as far as he has in life and still hasn't learned communication 101. This whole Hughs gone thing only got louder when he opened his mouth.

I keep hearing that JR is supposed to fade into the distance and it never happens. It's like waiting for Aquilini senior

Hughs leaving would be a high profile move and it would be the signal Bedard needs to get out of Chicago.

Vancouver Canucks is one of two NHL teams that don't have a practice facility. Calgary Flames is the other one, and they are building one with the new arena.

And Friedman said in 32 thoughts that this was actually one of the sticking points for Tocchet.
They seemed to do fine last year. This may have been a factor in his decision but the super wierd personnel bs surely scared him away. Red flags all over the place

Jay Woodcroft anyone ? He looks like a bit of a weenie but he's well spoken and a smart guy. He had the best winning % of all Edm coaches. And got screwed by bad goal tending and PDO. He started off at the bottom in coaching and is fully developed. He worked in the west for 2 stints and would be cheap cheap. He just wants back in the league.
