Rich Tocchet is leading candidate to be the next Bruins coach

If the NHL had like offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators like the NFL. Tocchet would be one of the best defensive coordinators in hockey.

Vancouver was the ultra rare
Top 5 in xGA
Bottom 5 in xGF
For a majority of the season

So you’re right about the NFL assessment

Like Vic Fangio in the NFL who just won the Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator
But as a head coach in denver he admitted he is out of depth doing both or overseeing them

It's wild to me that these retreads from the old boys club keep getting work but someone like Jay Woodcroft isn't getting another chance.

Tochett isn’t terrible but he’s a noticeable downgrade from Boston’s usual quality of coaches the last 20 years
Maybe they need a shit coach since the players always seem to revolt against the good ones they've had in the past.

He had one year where literally everything went right for the Canucks and they overachieved in every possible way and now he will live off of that pedigree for a while.
Ya it’s amazing and I am sure he is getting paid well. Not sure why such hype other than the overachieving Canucks a few years ago.

According to Jimmy Murphy, After failing to secure the Anaheim job, and having Quenville beat him out, it now sounds like Tochett is heading to Boston to be the next coach of the Bruins.

I personally dont see a fit there as Boston already struggles to score. Toch is a very defensive minded coach that wants to win games 2-1 every night.

I guess it can work because Boston is filled with veterans and not much young or rookie prospects in the lineup. Toch hates young players and prospects. Especially if they are offensive and skilled.

Toch hiring would be good for the likes of Swayman, Zadorov, Mcavoy. Absoloute disaster for Pastrnak and Mittlestadt.

I think this gives further insight into what the plan is in Boston.

A 61 year old tocchet isn't coming in to guide a teardown. Boston will be reloading with their current core.

The Bruins have always come across as a 'finger pointing' organization. They love to burn good coaches and players at the stake, blaming them for whenever they fail and turning on each other, when management has often shit the bed. Bruins fans have been piling on Carlo all year but he's looked great for Toronto for example.

Jesus, he's 61? Didn't realize he was that old already.

Tocchet seems to be a coach of extremes and may be better suited to an Assistant/Associate role.

A player's coach who gets along with all stars, personalities, and play styles but can't keep his lockerroom united.
A defensive guy whose rosters overachieve in the d-zone but suck offensively.
Not somebody you bring in to develop young guys, but has a pathetic resume for a win-now HC.

I seriously don't know anywhere he'd be a fit. Let alone a retooling team with a track record of collapsing.

Tocchet's division finishes:

2009 - last
2010 - 3rd; no playoffs
2018 - last
2019 - 4th; no playoffs
2020 - 5th; COVID play-in
2021 - 5th; no playoffs
2023 - 6th; no playoffs
2024 - 1st; playoffs!!
2025 - 5th; no playoffs

Tocchet's xGF% finishes:

2009 - 22nd
2010 - 23rd
2018 - 28th
2019 - 16th
2020 - 19th
2021 - 21st
2023 - 25th
2024 - 8th
2025 - 21st

I know NHL coaches are mostly NPC's and they're not really good or really awful most of the time, but I really, really don't get the appeal to this guy at all.

Outside of that one Vancouver team, his teams objectively do nothing but fail and their underlying numbers suck eggs.
PREACH!

Been saying this for years. Not sure why he’s so hot.

I think it’s because they love who he was as an NHL player 30 years ago. He was a Pens assistant coach for I think both of the back to back cup teams, which also earned him points, but I figured those would have dried up by now.

Lost me at"According to Jimmy Murphy..."

Wasnt there Bruins games this year where Pastrnak was getting benched for poor defensive and play without the puck effort?

Pasta will really have to step it up on those fronts because Toch will have non of that.
Yes there was.

Im surprised if Tocchet would want to go there. The ownership wants to win now regardless of where the team is in the cycle. Much like Vancouvers. And they will fire coaches just because.

Remember when everyone was wondering if Clayton Keller was ever going to reach his full potential, then Tocchet left and he had a breakout year in a different city? I think we're going to see a similar recovery from Petey in Vancouver next season.

I expect Pastrnak to have a notable decline in point totals if the Bruins go with Tocchet.
I don't think Pasta will buy in and will do what he wants out there if Tocchet is headstrung enough to mess with him

Don Nelson said you have to adjust your system to your talent rather than force your talent into a system they can't succeed at
