Because he's better. Cernak is far more physical, Zub is a slightly better one-on-one defender and is better in transition. He's more versatile and can handle a wider array of duties.
You haven’t provided any proof as to why he is better. It’s just your opinion.

Cernak has a slightly better offensive track record and strong defensive analytics.

I have Zub in one of my fantasy leagues, he’s been a solid depth grab for me so I do have a vested interest in knowing him as a player, I just don’t think he’s a more valuable asset than Cernak.

Due to age, size, draft pedigree and basic stats.

Yes, it's my opinion that to a win-now team, Zub is more valuable. If I had 2.5-3m to spend on a player, I would pick Zub over Cernak. If you disagree with that opinion, I don't really care. I won't even say you're wrong or I'm right. It's just my opinion from watching them.

Cernak was a main shutdown guy on back-to-back cup winners. He's heavily underpaid on our team, and our #3 (above Sergachev). He would be the #3 on all but a handful of teams in the league, if not all of them. Even now that people know his name, he seems to be one of the more underrated guys in the league because he doesn't have pedigree.

What RHD are available at the TDL that could be a cheap pickup for the Bolts who are severely lacking on the right side especially with Cernak and Bogo being injury prone this season.

Guessing someone like Joseph or Raddysh/Katchouk could be available for the right player, as well as our 1st this year or next

Does he have upside as a center or is his future entirely on the wing?

Big fan of Cernak. Zub is arguably the most effective D in Ottawa in the past 10yrs outside of Karlsson & Chabot.

It's a close race.

If I'm Tampa I don't make the swap because Cernak has proven he can get the job done on a championship team.

But if Zub was on Tampa and Cernak was on the Sens, most people would think Zub is the better player based on team strength.

Lmao Zub is better. Look at the teams and context.

maybe savard for a second or a third and a b prospect?

I would love him as a rental. Can't afford to take term at that price.

We really don't need anything splashy. Basically another Bogosian would be perfect.

Not really arguing against it. But Cernak is a major part of TB's success, and there has been a lot of success. Him and McDonagh are kind of the unsung heroes of the team, and the secret ingredient. Everyone knows how much we score, but they don't seem to notice we win cups by shutting teams down in one goal games.

I agree entirely - I made my initial comment as a "Ottawa is not a good fit at all for this type of trade", because our only RHD worth adding would cost a huge amount, and would require someone off their (extremely successful) roster. It wasn't a genuine suggestion.

That said, I have been vocal about how much I'd pay to bring Cernak to Ottawa in the past, while also addressing that Tampa trading him was a fantasy. I have lectured other Sens fans about how 2020 28th OV + Brannstrom for Cernak or 2021 10th OV for Cernak would be a hell of a deal for us.

I don't think the Habs should be using a retention spot on Savard and that's the only way the Lightning would have any interest (double retention down to 25% of total contract)

Subban just wouldn't be the type of guy we need. It's really a much more low key player we're looking for. Probably a guy making less than $2m.

I think he'd fit right in on TB, he needs a structured system to play in and that is part of why he's looked so out of sync in NJ.
I don't know how the cap would work though, maybe NJ takes a contract back or they try to do the double retention

We'd have to move multiple contracts even to fit him in with double retention, moving our shortage from RD to the forward corps. It's just rearranging deck chairs at that point.

Double retention takes his cap hit down to 2.25 million I think that should be manageable.
You wanted under 2 million and this is pretty darn close, I don't know if they'd really be interested in him but I'd like to see him win a Cup and Tampa would obviously be a good place for that to happen

If this was next yr and MAYBE Trouba is thinking about waiving a bit early b'c he knows as much as we like how he's played this yr his 8m is rough now that we are adding Fox + Zib extensions, THEN and in that event, if he would consider TB [presuming we can incentivize him], then for the younger slightly less expensive backliner:
Trouba
for
Stamkos retained at 7 per & and a late 1st.
Note: today per CF, Trouba is 28, Stamkos 31.
We can take back an expiring body to help balance cap.

Howev, none of this can be done today. And we would have to ship out Stamkos for cap after the season.
