OT: Restaurant thread

How about free bottled beer for hour at Club St B every Thursday 6-7pm in the mid to late 90s early 2000s

did that religiously. Free 5-8 beers just back in-line and stock up!

magnifico was the owner during that.

I've been jonesing poutine lately so I had some at the Moose game on Sunday. It was pretty good but it wasn't great. Any recommendations? And are you a traditionalist (fries, sauce & curds) or do you add other toppings?

Does anyone remember Pure Lard in the exchange from the mid 90s.

The story goes that the owner / chef was taken by Green Day as their personal chef.

Oh yeah, never was there but heard the same thing. Wasn't that the same guy that before that ran the hunger hut out of his apartment or house or something in the village?

And when I lived in the village around 89 there was a restaurant I remember getting to through the back alley by papa george's and up a bunch of stairs (maybe a fire escape?) I was only there once and don't have a clue what it could have been, I don't think it was there long.

My favourite restaurant is sadly no more. Gausthause Gutenberger was amazing. Authentic German and Central European food..I worked there in the 1999/2000 and continued to go there years after... Sadly the landlord jacked the rent by something ridiculous like 200%...sothey closed up...And the landlord has had a vacant building for a good 7 years now...smart business plan there...

Yeah that was a good place for sure. Went there a few times and was always great food. Nothing like eating authentic German food while a burly man in lederhosen plays an accordion. Good times.

Traditionalist myself. One of the best Poutines Ive ever had was at Le Garage Café in St. Boniface. A small little joint on Provencher. Very tasty!
Actually pretty much anything you order at Le Garage is awesome same goes for another St B hang at Pasquale’s on Marion, waaaay better than Santa Lucia, Lasagna, spaghetti, pizza, all of it. Best Italian fare in town to me.

Agreed. Ive never understood this city's fascination with Santa Lucia. Their food is meh and best pizza in Winnipeg??? Hell no.

Ichi Ban has always been a go to place for us.
I can’t get enough of their chicken livers. I know it sounds weird, but they are SO delicious.
One time I skipped the steak, shrimp and chicken and just had chicken livers for the appetizer AND the main course.
It’s hard to describe what it feels like eating all that iron, but I can best describe it as being similar to swallowing a 10 pound bowling ball.
Pricey but great here. We had our pool league wind up there a couple back.
Had the banquet at Rae and Jerry’s to. Always a great for a time warp and a prime rib. Burger is waaay under rated there as well. Awesome frys to. Great service as well.

LOL absolutely. The food sucks! Feel like crap afterwards as well.

someone mentioned Bistro Dansk in Wolseley in older posts. The best authentic (other than my wife’s) chicken Schitzel. A true hidden gem!

Anyone notice if their favourite restaurants are less busy these days? I wonder if places that embraced the communal table concept are regretting that now. Gotta think Folklorama doesn't happen this year.

I'm already pretty much a social isolationist so I have no info on that, only dine at restaurants if its someone's birthday. My big outings are a Jets game once or twice a month or get togethers at a friend's house. The traffic has sounded quieter to me at night the last couple of nights, though.

I guess with Folklarama, have to see what the situation is in July before they decide to cancel?

I think Quebec and Alberta are on the edge of asking restaurants to close down, if they haven't already.

We were at Smitty’s on Saturday. It was not very busy, so we were several feet away from any other patrons. They were doing a lot of work to control what they could. They were using industrial grade cleaner to wipe down all the surfaces. Every page of each laminated menu was individually wiped down after use. I’m sure no restaurant wants to be the epicentre of a hot spot, but who knows what will happen if the infection rate balloons.

Restaurants are taking a big hit on the stock market. Most of them are down 40 % and falling. If this virus gets out of hand, and some would say it is right now --no telling how far the shares will drop, and if some may go bankrupt ?? They'd have to have a lot of cash on hand, til the storm blows over.

Restaurant that is down the least is Dominos Pizza -likely because it's home delivery only.

Im trying to support local restaurants during this break. Many are still open for take-out only and are relying on our orders to support their staff.

Today I ordered from Tavern Rodos in Charleswood. Large portions of Greek food.

I would also recommend the Snitzel st Bistro Danske on Sherbrook.

Domino’s is an amazing story. Not many legacy brands can do what they did. Great back story to the turn around if you are ever bored.

As far as Restaurants go this has been devastating. People inside the industry believe at least 20% on the low side 30% on the high side of all Restaurants will not reopen. Cash business with low margins means they don’t usually have enough retained earnings to weather a total shut down like this. Doesn’t help that the federal stimulus plans have not figured out a strategy to allow access to relief funds that could provide critical emergency liquidity.

Hotels, airlines, restaurants, and any business that needs social gathering to work are all in crisis mode.
