Hyman is such an important part of this team, arguably as or more important than Tavares and Willy Styles. If the Leafs have to decide I take Hyman and hope 1 of the 2 kids in the minors can step up. Thoughts?

Hyman, for a few reasons:

1) we don’t have any prospects with his style knocking at the door, while Sandin/Lilj may have the potential to fill Rielly’s role in the near future
2) we don’t have anyone on the team to fill his special teams shoes, while there are multiple options for point man on the PP
3) Hyman’s likely to be cheaper, which gives us more room to fill out the rest of the team in a scenario where we can only have one of the above

They'll be able to afford both providing they don't want home run contracts.
Don't see how its remotely possible. Reilly is making $5MM now and will probably want a raise, Hyman is gonna get I believe $4MM average annual, THEN you still need a goalie.

I've seen different spread sheets with different numbers.
It can be done.

And we could very well save a few bucks in net.

It will be Hyman, because he'll be cheaper even if he asks for FMV and doesn't take a hometown discount. The cap budget will boil down to keeping Nylander or Rielly. Either keep Nylander and go get a 5 million dollar defenceman to replace Rielly or keep Rielly and trade Nylander for a cheaper forward. The combined budget for those 2 is 12-13 million dollars a season and can't go higher. Getting Hyman just costs this team Kerfoot.

My guess would be a little more than what Krug signed for . We must resign Morgan. Hyman can be easily replaced.

Hyman has more motor than anyone I've seen on the Leafs in years and he has a little bit of skill to go with it. Lock him up long term.

Campbell plus a 1 b goalie is cheaper than andersen.
1.2mm coming off kessel.
Kerfoot expendable.
Muzzin will be 33 to 34
Holl will be 29 to 30
Rielly will be 2 years younger than Holl
You dont lose Rielly
You dont lose Hyman

It will be both. The players all know there is a flat cap situation for the next 3-4 years and contract value expectation will be lowered across the board. Contract length will reflect that as guys will go shorter term to try and hit it big once cap opens up. Going to be tight salary budgets league wide until then, so opportunities to switch teams for a huge payday will be few and far between.

Hyman is too integral after playing long time with the big 4, and will be less expensive as he doesnt put up as many points. Rielly probably gets too expensive for what he is bringing, despite the brainfarts, his transition game is great, so Leafs need to figure out if Sandin can fill his shoes, and there is also Lehtonen who has looked okay

Trade Kerfoot, go 1a/1b for goalies instead of Andersen, and you have room to sign both.

Gotta just hope guys like Sandin, Robertson and Amirov can add value while on ELCs

I suppose if you take some of Andersons money and the Kessel money which I forgot about you can keep both BUT you have to go with a goaltending tandem where neither has been a number 1 and played consistently well for the majority of a season. Keeping both means, potentially, we have major question marks in net. I think history has shown it is very rare that you go far in the playoffs without a stud in net.

If I can only have one, I take Rielly. He's our #1D and Keefe plays him 2 minutes more a night than any other guy on our blueline. On a team that's built around offense and star forwards (though our defense is awesome now) having an elite offensive talent on the blueline is integral to the team. Utterly fundamental. IMO, Rielly is our 3rd or 4th most important player. He tilts the ice 24 minutes a night and his offensive game far and away eclipses any defensive deficiencies he has. There are two players on the team that I wouldn't trade in order to keep Rielly.

Hyman is the forward that we want to clone six times. There's a few more names on the, "won't trade in order to keep him" list than for Rielly, but it's still a damn short list.

If push comes to shove, I'd trade Nylander if that's what it took to keep both these guys. I desperately hope that's not the case and we can find a way to juggle the cap and Rielly+Hyman are willing to take enough discount that we can fit them all in. Curse this flat cap.

Give Hyman 2 years at $5M per then see where you're at after that.

Gives him a little more money, but also keeps the term managable. Allows you to still get a half decent tandem goalie to go with Campbell.

Can't go long term with Hyman unless he takes a sweatheart deal.

You get rid of Kerfoots 3.5 mil and most likely lose Andersens 5 mil. Thats 8.5 mil to spend with the flat cap. We will probably sign a goalie for anywhere between 3.5-4.5 so that leaves about 2 mil raises to both of them and then replace Kerfoot with a ELC.

Its not pretty but it is what it is, starting Robertson, Amirov, Hirvonen, etc are gonna be used to fill out the roster eventually along with vets taking league minimim. Simmonds 1.5 mil will be off the books aswell.

Its gonna be tight but I think we can keep them, its needed.

You can definitely sign both. Here are some steps that would be nice.

Step 1: Trade for Rickard Rackell (retained) who will cost you 1.9 million this year and next and is a signifant upgrade in the top 6 over Alexander Kerfoot.

Step 2: Trade Alexander Kerfoot to free up 3.5 million dollars in the off season.

Step 3: Let Freddy Anderson walk in free agency to free up 5.0 million dollars in the off season.

Step 4: Extend Zack Hyman, for term in the 4 million dollar range this off season.

Step 5: Sign a veteran depth forward (Eric Staal for example) on a 1 year contract.

Step 6: Sign a 1A goalie to play alongside Campbell, in the 3.5 million dollar range.

Money out (2021)
Freddy Anderson: 5.0
Alex Kerfoot: 3.5
Total: 8.5 million

Money in (2022)
Zack Hyman: 1.75-2.0 (raise)
Rickard Rackell: 1.9
1A FA goalie: 3.5
Veteran forward: 1.5-2.0
Total: 8.5-9.0 million

Lineup...

Thornton-Matthews-Marner
Rackell-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Staal (example)-Hyman
Simmonds-Engvall-Spezza
Robertson

Reilly / Brodie
Muzzin / Holl
Sandin / Bogosian
Liljegren

1A
Campbell

The following off season, Phil Kessel's 1.2 cap retention comes off the books, you let an Eric Staal or Wayne Simmonds type walk and replace them with an ELC and you resign Reilly long term, for 7.5 million'ish.

We’re gonna have a question mark in net no matter what. Andersen has been decline and he isn’t getting younger. We can go sign a starter but goaltending is voodoo and when you look at guys like Price or Bobrovsky, even the best can just fall off without warning.

With Matthews/Nylander contract also expiring within the next 4 years and therefore also under a flat cap there are going to be some seriously difficult decisions. I wonder if Nylander is traded near the end of his deal as i dont see how they will be able to afford giving him a raise too if they give raises to Matthews, Rielly, Hyman etc
