Speculation: Report: Maple Leafs' Trade Offer For Flames' Goaltender Jacob Markstrom Was 'Comparable' to Deal Executed With Devils

Calgary picking one comparable offer over another is not much of a story.

But them taking lesser draft picks for Zadorov/Tanev than what the Leafs presumably offered out of spite for Tre choosing the Leafs is a little wild.

Markstrom himself could have had a say in it.

Absolutely.

Hypothetically - If they offered the exact same value but Markstrom prefers NJ by any degree - then you trade him to NJ.

The Leafs are also a great regular season team, so their 1st rounder should be valued less, and I'm not sure they have a player similar in value to Bahl. For that reason, it seems odd to suggest they could even offer something really similar. their prospects/youngsters are either flat out better, or flat out worse (assuming I'm not overlooking someone) in terms of value.

Why is this a thread lmaooooo

Yeah the whole thing is pathetically stupid. This is nothing more than idle speculation by EF, and 'comparable' does not mean equal to it merely means in the same ballpark.

Either it wasn't comparable, Markstrom didn't want to go to Toronto, Calgary wanted to make Treliving overpay, or Calgary sent him to NJ as a thank you for retaining in the Tanev deal.

No need to overpay for markstrom, I don’t think he’s the answer anyways. Blessing in disguise for the leafs.
I agree with you and I think NJ fans are going to be calling Markstrom a bum before the contract is up

I imagine the package was - Timmins + 23rd overall pick in 2024.

The package the Devils got had a better roster player and a more valuable pick but the framework is similar.

I'm not surprised, the Flames have been petty with Treliving ever sense he got here, it started with them not letting him on the draft floor for the first half of the 1st round.

It continued with CLEARLY taking less for Zadorov then they could have gotten, you will never convince me that a 3rd and a 5th is the best they could have done there is NO SHOT that's true.

The excuse was they didn't want to retain which doesn't fly when you retain on a player with more term which Markstrom has.

And now this.

Personally I feel that Markstrom did not want to go to Toronto with its sometimes vicious media putting him on the hot seat.

He looked very uncomfortable in front of the Calgary media (Toronto wannabes in my opinion) this past winter.

I don't know what the Jersey media is like, but I suspect Marky won't have the spotlight shining on him the way it would be in Toronto.

Markstrom did kind of hint Toronto was interested and he as well, but New Jersey was always his first choice.

lol Flames organization fired him. You gotta pay up.

Reports keep coming that the Leafs keep getting outbid - Leafs GM needs to start “losing a trade” to start getting the players they want or else it’s going to be status quo.

Ah yes, the great tactic of deliberately overpaying. Wonderful idea.

idk why Trevling is still wasting time calling Calgary. They aren't trading anyone to him. It's legit a waste of his time to be calling them. Calgary's owner legit prob is telling Conroy to lead him on for weeks and then reject his offers to f*** with him.

1- flames didn't fired treliving. Treliving left because calgary forced him to keep Sutter

2-It's Markstrom who preferred to play in NJ over Toronto

I mean, "comparable" but clearly not equal or better. So...

Not sure what the equivalent from Leafs would be. Presumably 2024 1st which is known to be a late pick in a weak draft. Plus...what does Treliving view as "comparable" to Bahl? Cade Webber? A longshot like Niemela? Some sort of throw-in forward like Nic Robertson? If it were Kokkonen, or one of the actual "bigtime future superstar prospects" like Minten/Cowan, Markstrom would presumably be a Leaf right? Maybe he offered the rights to RFA Arbitration Trap Timothy Liljegren?

How many more people are going to speculate that Markstrom didn’t want to go to Toronto when Friedman flat out said he updated his places he would accept from just NJ to include Toronto and Ottawa. Then to EVERYONE. Then he paired that back to any team in the East because of travel and his age.

He also said that it was only going Toronto’s way if they REALLY beat the Devil’s offer. Calgary isn’t doing shit for Toronto. That’s what happened.

No other team could take the whole contract without CGY having to retain.

Tre didnt leave on great terms, so why would a comparable offer from him be taken. Being the bridesmaid has always been hes schtick as well.

wonder how many of the Leaf posters would have changed there tune if they ended up with Markstrom.;)

Sure, not getting Markstrom is a "blessing in disguise."

It really depends what option they go with instead.

There are better goalies available in the trade market.

Treliving keeps missing on his targets. Now he's talking extending Marner because he won't waive and he doesn't want to lose him for nothing. Tavares won't waive. Not sure what the solution is there. Talk about a wasted rebuild.
Seems like a bunch of assumptions here
