Rename the Selke.....the Bergeron

They shouldn’t rename the trophy under any circumstances. That is beyond disrespectful to Patrice. They need to create a new trophy named after him.

I'm a Habs fan. I've seen Gainey play. And the idea here is to make those trophy names relevant and as TODAY as it's possible. It's not by naming a trophy to a guy who stopped playing in 89. Also, the Selke right now is based on a guy who is a true 2-way player. A 2-way player in the sense that provides offense just as much as he provides defense. Gainey was not that. If we want to have a trophy for the best pure defensive forward, go ahead. Unless you do it for the Selke, and ADD a 2-way trophy and have the Bergeron added to it.....
That’s fine but Gainey is quite literally why the award was created in the first place

Who says he is the best of all time? You?

Should we just rename all the trophies every generation to acknowledge the player who won it the most?

I think we should rename them every week, that way we are up to date with the latest best guy!

If Wayne Gretzky has no major awards named after him, why on earth should Patrice Bergeron have one named after him.

The Patrice Bergeron Trophy for the best rookie defensive defenseman of the year.

This was my first thought

I’d actually be a proponent of the awards being named after the player who won the most of them. And when that changes they are re-named.

I think the Hall of Fame suffices for him

Amazing player and one of the all time greats. Sure, he might win his 6th Selke (more than anyone else by 2), but I just don't see the clear reason to rename a voted award based on the current standards. The Hart is not the Gretzky; the Norris is not the Orr.

1) Why are people so attached to the names of these trophies?
2) Why does this have to 'open the box?'

We don't often see a player do what Bergeron did. I wouldn't have a problem with this. I also won't care if it doesn't happen.

Would like to see the trophy renamed for Gainey if they change it

I’m not into renaming trophies. They’re a large part of hockey history and should remain as they’ve been for decades. Next thing the word Stanley will be changed to something that would probably sound just as dumb as being awarded the Bergeron
