Crappy league. They’re so worried about a rookie who hits a little too hard because they don’t want anyone tough in the league and not concerned about why their product is so mediocre and is on the decline year after year. What a sad state of affairs the NHL is.
Rempe is a joke and not in a good way. Sure, it is fun when goons fight with each other. It is not fun to watch goons try to injure star players.

Do you actually think the product would be better if no-talent goons would be allowed to just destroy the star players?

The Dallas Stars are extremely disappointed that Rangers forward Matt Rempe was only suspended 8 games for his horrifying act of violence last night at American Airlines Center. Rempe is a repeat offender with a long history of these type of acts and we find it shocking that the NHL and their Department of Player Safety failed to take the appropriate action and suspend him indefinitely. We view this as a dereliction of duty by NHL Head of Player Safety, George Parros, and believe he is unfit to continue in his current role.:sarcasm:

As someone who thinks the kid’s overwhelmingly crappy at everything, most of his popularity came rom him dropping the gloves in almost all of his first several games.
Let me guess, he got his ass kicked, so he started head hunting instead?

He held his own through most of them, but he’s reckless. Comes in full speed along the boards…often late, doesn’t always have his elbows tucked, he’s a mediocre player. But, he really hasn’t shied away from the tough guys.

And personally I liked that. I got nothing against goons fighting another goon, that whole Rempe saga was fun and entertaining at first. It should have stayd in that "goon vs goon"-range and it would be totally fine.

How does a team benefit from having Rempe play for them? Struggling to see any positives.

It’s all about intimidating skill players. If the other teams skill players are nervous it may affect their play. It’s the mentality that helped win the Flyers two cup in the 70’s, although, in fairness, most of their goons weren’t embarrassments as hockey players. They could actually play a regular shift of decent hockey even without the sideshow.

Can we start a poll with how many games it takes for him to do this again?

Is it possible to set up a poll with one answer on hfboards because it is gonna happen in the first game.

NHL looked at the schedule and said "ooh let's make sure he gets a hero's welcome by having his first game home be at MSG against the Devils" - 100% in line with how the head office thinks.

We need options:
Warmups, 1st period, 2nd period, 3rd period, overtime or 2nd game.

He probably would have been sent back down to Hartford anyway after that game, so 8 games is NBD. Honestly, he needs to learn from this. It's so funny because he's such a nice, genuine guy off-the-ice and during interviews, but forgets his brain during game time.

Shouldn't it raise some red flags if your example is not only from half a century ago, but is also qualified with, in essence, "they could also play hockey pretty well"?

so how is he not learning a thing and doubling down?

Does he have posters of himself on his walls thinking he's a superstar and he's just giving his fanboys what they want (incl hand-to-ear shtick);
is he furiously refreshing his phone after games to see the social media impressions he's generating?

is he just plain ignoring all the advice on toning it down that must've come from every single coach and player, and the Quick family... and thinks the best path is boxing lessons

did not getting a sweater for 4 weeks at a time TWICE this season not get through his head

anybody want a peanut?

personally I get the feeling he's got Rempemania on the brain and 'ba da ba ba ba' 🎶He's Lovin' It🎵

This stuff will never go away until the NHL decides to protect is it's star players (and by extension, everyone else too) by banning hits after the puck is gone, just as the NFL protected quarterbacks by banning hits after the ball was released.

Before the NFL did that, cheap shots on quarterbacks were commended, and defenses that did that were "tough" and no one seemed to recognize how stupid it all was.

Without a doubt. Laviolette should be embarrassed for dressing Rempe. The guy doesn’t belong in the NHL. The only useful purpose he serves is intimidating talented players. A better punishment would be forcing the Rangers to play him 25 mins a game the next 8 games.

He's just a big guy and that's the only reason why he played at a pro level. He has something like 80pts total since he's been playing junior hockey. Yeah, even since he was 15 year old!
Good for him for having his 15 min of fame, it's now time to move on. Injuring real hockey players.

Lav seems pretty desperate lately, which is understandable since any morning he could come in and on his desk would be an empty box for his personal effects and a gift-wrapped Timex.

Am doubtful that the Rangers' recent woes are mostly Lav's fault -- the Rangers always struck me as having a strange build -- but when you're the coach it's your head that gets chopped off first.

8 games seems about right.

I'm wondering if there ought to be team punishments in addition to individual player punishments.

Reason being - losing Rempe or some other scrub hired gun loser is not much of a detriment but a guy like that can take out a star player with him. In a playoff series, mere individual punishment could greatly benefit the dirty team.

For example - I lose Reaves to a suspension while you lose McDavid due to the dirty hit Reaves got suspended for. My team is literally incentivized to injure McDavid. It's totally worth it. I lose Reaves? Who gives a crap! The only thing preventing it is basic human decency - which cannot be counted on (see Clarke, Bobby). That incentive could be eliminated with stiff enough team penalties. As in, the team that committed the penalty must lose more PPG value (or some other metric) than the player that was injured.
