LOL, thought I figured out a great one by remembering the name of an obscure Swedish import who got traded from TOR to CBJ, woops guess not!
Missed on Fuhr for TOR, thought him playing through the mid-90s would have brought his save % down (it's Career Sv%, so that complicates things, or maybe it simplifies them actually?)
So for the last square, I'm thinking, "Okay, JVB wasn't great with Philly, but he played on a pretty good team and in the f***ing Dead Puck Era; surely he managed at least a .900 sv%..."
Wrong!
Edit: No, the mistake I made was this: I thought the square was asking me for a goalie who had a save percentage of .900 or higher playing for Philly (in a particular season).
That column is for career save percentages. but it's a double-edged sword - had I know that, there's no way I would have selected goalies like Lehner and Bernier.
Ehhhh... knew Havlat wasn't that good an answer but could only think of him and Hartman. I've used Darby Hendrickson at least three or four times... He's one of my go-to answers when applicable.
Totally missed the "had to win the Cup on that team" part, so I whiffed on Bret Hedican, trying to complete my all-old-ex-Canucks grid
Also missed on Rick Lanz for VAN/BCHL, trying to be different, thought his looooong BCHL coaching career and high draft pedigree probably meant he was a WHL guy, but nope, he played in the OHA
Also, looking at the results: it is truly sad how unheralded and unremembered Tomas Sandstrom is!
Eh... STL/ARZ and STL/OTT were tougher than I figured they'd be... of course, I always think of better picks right after picking someone else. Hello, Dan Quinn!
I always struggle with finding obscure ones for Nashville-Atlanta-Columbus-Minnesota for whatever reason.
With the Coyotes move to Utah, I looked up some past drafts where the relocated team didn't have a jersey ready for their first draft. Carolina took Tselios (cousin of Chris Chelios, his side of the family kept the Greek spelling) in 1997 and he was given a generic white jersey with the NHL crest because there had been ongoing litigation with the Hurricanes name.
Carolina was decimated with goalie injuries during the pandemic season and lured Jack LaFontaine out of college in the middle of the season which was unusual. He got in a couple games and got lit up unfortunately.
I wonder what the best answer is for the WSH square. Who was their Captain right before the Lockout... Halpern? Didn't they have Witt as Captain for a while?
Got hurt by thinking Konstantinov had an Olympic medal and Frank Boucher was a Rangers captain (he was later coach and GM, so it was a logical thought).
Oh jeez, what was even supposed to happen here? I could only think of Lehner for all 3, and then like... 6 goalies, 4 of which only worked for Buffalo...
