Refs not calling the game

Connor needs to sit it out, and be clear why. Knoblauch, Bowman, and Jackson all need to defend him. Some of the vets- especially the grizzled guys like Perry who have been around and know bullshit when they see it- need to to do the same. It would be the lead story on every sports channel- above even the stupid Four Nations- and no fine from Buttman could erase the embarrassment it would bring his precious game managed league.

Of course that would take balls and I don't think this group has them. They're too happy to go along to get along and they're getting the officiating they deserve as a result.

That all want to just make as much money as they can without rippling the water.

I just had a funny picture in my head. If the Oilers have a comfortable lead in the third in the upcoming game against the Nucks, Corey Perry should just grab Garland and pick him up, skating around with him as he's flailing around trying wriggle loose.

I'm childish but that would make me laugh. Make it so.

i would attach a leash to that collar of a neckguard he wears and then pick him up.

This isn't the first time we've seen something like this, where two guys look like they're fighting with each other to get up, but really it's one guy holding both of them down.

The real question is, how are the refs so dumb as to fall for this stuff? This is toddler-level trickery and they still can't see through it.

My opinion is more penalties should be called instead of game management. It would make for 1 really messy season, but the players over time would adapt. Is cross checking even a penalty anymore??

If the game was called by the book there would unironically be 20+ penalty calls per game. It would ruin the entertainment value entirely.

It will never happen and the players have figured that out.

Serevalli on the DFO podcast just said emphatically that no player in the salary cap era has take more abuse with fewer calls than Connor McDavid, and it's not close. He also talked about the serious lack of accountability for refs.

The positive out of McDavid's suspension is hopefully that the NHL executive, made of ex hockey players who were shitty NHL players, will pull their heads out of their asses.

That's hilarious. Player Safety is led by a guy who nearly had 10 fighting majors for every goal he scored in his career and 5 fighting major for every point he scored in his career.

He'll never understand what stars go through in the NHL.

Unfortunately I don't think anything will make Connor miss the 4 nations cup, he's way too hyper competitive.
I think McDavid should sit out the 4 nations cup with the express reason that hes unsure how refs will call the game and its not worth the risk.

Unfortunately, I agree with you both, and you are both correct.

A solution could be, extend the game by whatever power plays are called with right of refusal.

I've been beating this drum for awhile. Name one other sport that increases the standard for what qualifies as a penalty in the final 2 minutes while also reducing the consequence for commiting such a foul.

For example, imagine if the NFL decided that they'll now allow Pass Interfence and Roughing inside the 2 minute warning unless it is the baddest of the bad. And even then if they do call it, that the penalty is reduced to 5 yards instead 15 (or point of incident with PI). Furthermore, if you commit a penalty preventing a touchdown on the last play of the game, it's all good, we'll just give you the penalty on the box score, but since there are zeros on the clock the other team doesn't get to execute a play after applying the penalty.

If they did that, everyone would lose their minds at the stupidity of it. Yet, this is standard practice with hockey.

Or in soccer, if you commit a foul in penalty time that results in a penalty kick, imagine tthey make you take it 20 yards further back or not at all because of the time.

Or in basketball, say they made fouls inside the final minute now only result in a single free throw instead of two and if you commit a foul on a player on a buzzer beater, no worries.

This is what we're told to think is reasonable in hockey. Frankly, it shocks me there aren't way more incidents like these in the final 30 seconds of a 1 goal game.

Short term, yes. Long term, players would have to adjust i.e. elite players would actually have time and space to showcase just how much better they are than the Conor Garlands of the world.

Agree 100%. It's a stupid "tournament" in any case.
