Referee Dean Morton tells Brendan Gallagher to go f*** himself (WARNING LANGUAGE IN VIDEO)

a) The game was over b) I'd personally rather have some curse word than random penalties , fines or suspensions for stupid nonsense.

When things are heated people lose their cool and use harsh language . It happens. Perfectly normal.

1) Then walk away. I have no doubt in my mind that this ref will call penalties on Gallagher for any little instance.
2) I don't think abuse is "stupid nonsense. Verbal should be called when it gets out of hand, it'll act as a warning to others as well.

After the game is over? Seriously, what are Morton's options here with regards to calling a penalty?

None, you walk away.

He didn't, now this is blowing up in a bad way for him, paired with the SN video of missed calls. This is a bad look...there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he will always have a bias against the habs going forward.

I once worked as a tech support/CSR for Xbox. You haven't heard anything like the wrath of angry video game nerds. I was actually very much a people person prior to that job. Not so much now.
Lol I always try to be nice to the tech guys. I need them more than they need me.

I hear you on the people thing though. I never thought a cabin in the woods would appeal to me so much but I’m starting to get it after 20 years of dealing with the public

Doesn't matter to me what players or coaches say to each other in anger. People make such a big deal. Angry talk is not true information it's angry talk.

People getting fired because something chirped wasn't politically correct or sexual or maybe about the other persons mother etc.. Meaningless drivel.

Refs (hopefully not players) do try to dictate the games as directed by the league and though it sucks NHL is purely entertainment and it should be expected. The games are supposed to go the way that makes the best money for the league. Anybody who believes NHL is a purely honest game is quite naive.

Most of the people I dealt with were just exasperated folks, which I totally understood as a gamer who also hates needing tech support.

Others though... Yikes. I've been called every racist name in the book (except the ones for white people, which is weird because I'm white). I learned new slurs working at that job. I've been threatened, accused of personally trying to screw people over, and blamed for things that couldn't possibly be my fault. We dealt with bomb threats constantly.

The worst one though, was a guy who was *too* friendly, really creepy dude that wanted to know where we were located, my gamertag, my email, my last name, my weekend plans. Very insistent fellah. Got super hostile when I wouldn't give him any personal info. Real wacko.

It seems as though refereeing in the NHL has been getting consistently worse. a referee should never be angry and yet we see them emotional and angry often.

Except that hockey (and other sports) fans have been saying that for the 60 or so years I have been watching sports. Just like my grandmother said life was getting tougher every year and no one could survive, but here we are.

If you ever have a chance to talk with a ref, you will probably get a different opinion. There was even a book out some 10 years ago where several discuss their worst calls. They are very open about it. In the end, they say they just have to trust that their experienced eyes see what they think they see.

And, MTL do themselves no favors with this. Stars broadcast showed Julien several times barking at the ref, more than I can ever recall seeing.

When Gainey brought so many former Canadians down to Texas, they rarely called out refs. They accepted penalties and fines. They understood class.

Looks like that is lost there in MTL now. Lastly, good teams play through bad breaks. Bad teams complain. I think a lot of their griping comes from knowing they really aren't a great or even good team right now.

That said, most fan bases can understand the frustration of 0 power plays. And even the Stars broadcast noted that slash that should have been called and alluded to another one that they "got away with." There is a chance those power plays could have changed the outcome.

And, MTL was vastly better team first 15 minutes or so, skating well enough there should probably have been a few calls.

But bad teams also tend to lack 3rd gear in the 3rd period, too. And that was the case last night.

Lol ah ya the weirdos. Personal favorite of mine.

always wonder if today is the day one of them shows up to make life interesting.

Dean Morton can go f*** himself 20 times over. Looks like there's a reason the NHL has only allowed him 5 playoff games to officiate. Useless ref who is called in when a competent one calls out sick.

Refs already take a ton of verbal abuse from players, coaches, and fans. I don’t blame a ref for giving it back. I was at an AHL game a couple years ago and a ref got fed up with a player and screamed “**** you!!” from across the ice right back at the player.

Regardless of the quality of reffing, if people can’t respect others (refs in this case), they shouldn’t expect it in return. You can’t attract bees with vinegar.

So when a ref swears at James Neal for diving, everyone thinks it's hilarious. But when it happens to the Habs after they were caught diving all game, it's the worst thing in the world.

Well.........it appears to me he was giving Gallagher the chance to walk away. I believe officials have to stay on the ice until all players leave. That little squirt Gallagher gave him no choice. LOL

ofcourse people take offense to this and get sensitive

Soft world we live in now

I don't think this is the case. To me this seems like like a move to try and get back at the ref for calling the game badly in their mind .

See how conviently the audio file almost completely leaves out what Gallagher said ? Not suspicious at all ....

This is the classic : I think you wronged me or my favorite team/whatever so i'll take revenge on you by leaking out something that makes you look bad. Its especially bad when its edited to make it seem worse.

Please what? Lol aren’t the refs supposed to be unbiased and conduct themselves in a personal manor? I get sworn at on a daily basis at the job I work at, if I were to swear back at my clients I would be fired.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're not a ref.

I've played at several levels of hockey.....this is pretty common.

Also, as a side note......have you ever watched baseball?

I have zero issue with a ref telling a player to f*** off.....essentially if they are constantly bitching and whining.

Just as much as the referees sometimes need to show some thicker skin, so do the players (and the OP as well).

I used to get lipped off from the ref all the time as a 14 and 15 year old in Bantam and Midget. NHL and players always do this and it's been going on for YEARS. And there are no hard feelings between them later on... I guarentee players and refs would grab a beer after the game if they could and laugh about it.

It's ok to battle you know. It happens. I know people nowadays want everyone to be nice and not say mean things to people, but this type of stuff happens when the intensity of hockey is going on.

Feelings aren't always hurt... I know that's hard to believe for some people

If the game was still going, he probably just would have given the Unsportsmanlike Conduct call and skated away. But, the game was over, it was not a penalty, or at best a borderline penalty that wasn't called in OT (biased perhaps as a Stars fan, but his stick didn't touch the skate or lower leg at first) and Ref had nothing to do.

As to the quality if the ref, yes, only 5 PO games, but still, he gets reviewed every year and maintains enough standing to be rehired year after year. If he was really bad, I am sure the NHL would have found a replacement. Not to mention, they all get league directives on what to call and when, etc. They get an email after every game saying they missed this or that. If theirs says they missed a slash, watch carefully, and one of them or both will call more slashes their next game. Whenever the league says they are going to get tough, and call everything, it lasts about 3 weeks, until they see having half the game on the PP isn't very entertaining. So, they tell the refs to call only the ones in scoring zones that look likely to have affected the play. Gallagher falling down in the neutral zone before any scoring chance, even if a trip, probably isn't going to get called. Especially in OT.

Refs are human. And so is the NHL. If any publicity is good publicity (and the league needs it, for sure) then constant griping about referees is at least partly intentional by the league to generate discussion. I will admit as a Stars fan, I may be biased on this particular one. The Stars board has similarly erupted (although not 10 pages worth, because there are only dozen or so of us that regularly post) on zero PP games for us.

However, if we agree refereeing really needs to be improved, anyone want to propose a solution? Probably merits a separate thread on this board.
