Reffing has been quite questionable in the last game and it seemsed like they were trying to bring the momentum back towards the Lightning. Hopefully the organization puts in a complaint to the league regarding the reffing bias against the Leafs.

I think the league needs to bring in the coaching challenge in the NHL like it has in the NBA. There was 2 clear questionable Call/Non-Calls that were going against the Leafs.

Muzzin's phantom hooking call
Vasilevskey's playing with the puck outside the crease Non-call.

Refs were absolute trash in game 3, I thought games 1 and 2 were fine though. I don't think it was bias last night tbh, just complete incompetence. Overall i'm ok with officiating so far in our series, this is not even close to how the Boston series were, so it's a huge relief. But the refs absolutely need to be held accountable for bad calls/non-calls. We got away with a couple holds behind the net last game as well that I thought were for sure getting called.

Muzzin put his stick in the guy’s hands as he was cutting through the crease. That’s a penalty.

Yes, Vasi touching the puck two inches over the lines is technically a penalty, but which referee do you think should have called that? The only guy within 50 feet was blocked out.

The issue isn't that the Leafs mostly aren't called on real penalties, it's that the other team isn't called for the exact same situations or worse. When Vasi fumbled the puck to Marner, Stamkos hooked him worse than that Muzzin penalty. It was not called due to the Leafs being up...and being the Leafs.

Refs have been fine. I would say all our penalties except one were penalties. The one on Boosh in game 2 defending Point was not a penalty.

Everything else we have ourselves to blame. When you cut to the net like Tampa did in period 3 you get calls. That's always been the case. You want the same calls then start cutting to the net like Nylander did in game 1.

the reffing in this sereis has been surprising not as once sided IMO. I was pleasently surprised that we did not get completely screwed last game with Chris Lee reffing the game.

The reffing in the boston series was one of the worst reffing i've ever seen.

It's the constant game management that is frustrating - the penalties are so predictable and which team gets one depends on the score/penalty tally, it leads to soft calls just to even up the game. League wants every series to go 7 games for obvious reasons, and do their best to get it there
It's also been surprisingly consistent from game to game too. I think both teams have a clear idea of what and what is not allowed in this series.

The real issue is the "even things up" mentality which a NHL ref copped to this year (I think). If a team commits 10 penalties in a row and the other team is squeaky clean the offending team should be called 10 times in succession. Do you think that would ever happen?? Never. So when the even up call comes and it always does it is usually ticky tack and the team getting hosed thinks things are fixed against them and in a way they are. Also a penalty at the start of a game is a penalty with 1 minute left, again the refs put the whistle in their pocket and people get justifiably pissed. The refs are their own worst enemies and I think on balance NHL refs blow.

Game 2 was a disgrace but I was pleasantly surprised with game 3. Game 1 was stupid in The sense you know that nobody on Tampa would get a match penalty for what Clifford did but you can’t game manage your way out of how bad the leafs were dominating that game

Oh please. Everyone thinks the refs have it against their team. Refs make bad call sometimes. They made a bad call against Tampa last night. It happens. It's not because they have a bias against a team.
Bullshit. The f***ing commentary crew was all over Matthews demanding his suspension after he cross checked Dahlin..

Game one got a little bit hyper so they had to clamp down.

Game two there were two soft calls that completely took the wind out of the sails - the call at the end of the first on Kerfoot (which they scored on) and the call on Lyubushkin (still 3-1, has Lyubushkin tried maybe taking less penalties?)

Last night wasn’t too bad but Tampa is always trying to muck it up after the whistle - I think it was Cernak who got a clearly visible warning from the refs at the end of the first to not go into the scrum, and there he goes, into the scrum.

TB has also had a bench minor (G2) and two Marners (last night).

I’m not displeased overall with the officiating but I’m not saying it can’t be better either - less soft game management shit would be welcome.

EDIT: And enough already, let penalties be reviewable by video.

‘But but but! The integrity and agency of the refs!’

Please, like every one of them is a Christ figure or something.

The game has gotten too fast and phantom calls happen every damn night - the two I remember most were Muzzin against Winnipeg (I think) and Spezza in the 8-1 game when it was still just 2-0.

If anything it could vindicate the refs and garner them a little sympathy, they’ve taken a beating this year.

Good. I'm a dinosaur. I feel Matthews will be a better player and the Leafs a better team if he never comes close to winning the Lady Byng. He needs to use that size and play with just a little bit of an edge. I'm aware in the woke world we live we are just supposed to get along. Off the ice fine, whatever. Let the commentary crew improve Matthews street cred. Make him bad ass. Dahlin got what he deserved.

I do feel like that was a bit of a reputation suspension, but in a different sense.

He’s never even been fined before, and barely two weeks later, no call or suspension to Ville Heinola when he does the same thing to Bunting.

He should have paid his 5000 fine and that’s the end of it - instead lets derail a potentially historic season for him because he doesn’t play for Tampa, NYR, Chicago, Boston or Pittsburgh.

100% with you- I don’t want him spending too much time in the box, but he needs to become more stealth dirty like all of the Stars are.

As Kucherov says when he can’t score any more blow, it’s #1 bullshit.

This years playoffs and the new cross checking rules tells me the NHL was not happy the Habs made the finals last season

Everything is just anti- Chiarot so far. Simmonds found that out the hard way.

Maybe that’s because it was a bush league move? It was a dirty play and a suspension was totally justified.
But when people provided you 1000 other examples of similar plays not getting a suspension you just ignored it.
