Ericsson didn't play the puck like a grenade on his stick and would stand up for teammates while providing solid defence.

This is so far from the narrative that people painted him with during his tenure. He was literally called a pylon. Every. Single. Game. Thread.

I feel like my crusade to clear his name worked a little too well, because now people have the rose colored glasses about that era.

Getting sent over the boards doesn't mean you are good, it can just as easily be the coach making a bad choice. The media pointed it out to him, and Holl was immediately out of the lineup the next game.
Then he sat for 2 games that the Leafs lost.
Came back in for the last games of the FLA series that went OTL, W, OTL.

It's Ericsson all over again. Ericsson got put into big spots because nobody else could do it. And then he got exposed against top lines and people dumped on him for years and years.

The point with Ericsson was that Holland viewed him as a 2nd pairing guy, and paid him as such, while in reality, he was a 3rd pair/7th DMan, based on his "performance".

Problem was, you should blame the GM who offered the contract, not the player who signed it. Hell, anyone of us signs 25/6 at any day of our lives.

Ericsson in his prime was not a 7th D, that is silly.

They didn't win because of him, but they definitely lost some games with his help.
Yep, Justin Holl brought down the mighty Stanley Cup hopeful Toronto Maple Leafs. Gonna get Christmas cards from opposing team's players.

Prime Ericsson was probably an OK 4/5D.

He had to play way above his pay grade (and got paid for it) because the rest of the Wings D was mostly garbage outside of Kronwall since his GM was failing miserably at his strategy to only try to shore up his thinning blue line through free agency.

Never said he was the only reason, but he definitely did his fair share. Also, never said the Leafs were mighty.

What was Ericssons prime, if there was any? But ok, I would agree with 4/5 rather than 5/6/7, when talking about his best years.

He was a 3-5D to me. His prime would be the mid of his career. He was simply asked to play higher than he should because we had very little on the blueline. The contract he got was terrible, but he also got hurt shortly after signing it and his injury affected him quite a bit.

I'm loving the talk about Ericsson because he took so much more grief during his career than was deserved.

As for Holl, I'm just gonna hope he looks really good on the Wings so it's another reason to laugh at the Leafs.

Really hoping he is our overpaid third pairing meathead instead of our stopgap RHD for the second pairing.

Feeling better about this in light of the Ghost news, I anticipate he’s the 3RHD behind Seider and Ghost. Holl and Ghost do very different things on the ice, so if you structure partners and shifts effectively I think they can balance out each others flaws to an extent.

This team won’t play sexy hockey but I understand the logic, generally at least.

Ghost forcing Holl down the depth chart should tell you how bad Holl is. Ghost shouldn't be a top 4 d-man. He should be on a bottom pairing and running a PP unit.

Every Toronto game I’ve watched in the past few seasons, Holl has stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Hopefully a change of scenario for him will do good for him, but I have 0 expectations from this signing if anything I’m extremely pessimistic about it. Those trying to compare him to Ericsson *hold my beer* it’ll be even worse.

So right side is Seider, holl, Lindstrom
Left side is Walman, maatta, chariot
Edvinsson and Wallinder should be able to crack that line up

Haven't heard much from the analytics crowd about this one so I decided to check for myself.

How does he compare to Hagg and Oesterle (who he will be replacing)?

That's a low bar, I expect him to be better. At least we won't have to watch an AHL defense like 3 year ago.

Don't hate the signing, don't love it. Overpaid, but who cares, no worse than Chiarot or Copp who are overpaid by $2M a piece.

I wouldn't put that much emphasis on WAR and especially JFresh's cards.

WAR is very much a flawed stat. Might work in baseball, but hockey is a completely different animal with the style of play and trying to isolate individual performance.
