You'd think that this would have to be a Hagel-esque overpayment incoming, no? Like, the Canucks have made some baffling moves in the past under former management, but you would think this is a "meet our elaborate overpayment of a price or we'll just hang on to him" kind of deal, no?

Marino+Kapanen for Garland+Schenn checks the boxes roster-wise, but it seems like that's skewed toward the Canucks in terms of value, unless everyone has REALLY soured on Kapanen.

I’m not ok with trading Schenn for Kapanen…

Okay, lemme break it down.

Kap and Marino for Garland would be an awful trade. Pens are not deep on RD after Letang/Marino. Garland is not that much of a difference-maker where we would trade Kapanen (who has 5 less points than Garland on a down year) AND a cost-controlled 24 year old top-4 dman in Marino.

In what world does that make sense? Like others have said, Garland and Marino probably have similar value, but it’d still be a bad trade for the Pens.

Kapanen and Marino for Garland is too much cap going back to Vancouver. Kap and Garland are similiar players, but Kapanen is going to get paid this coming offseason, whereas Garland is cost-controlled for a while.

Does Vancouver have the balls to retain on Garlands deal if that garners a Hagel-like return with 2 firsts? It’d be a long time to retain but it’d expedite Vancouver’s retooling.
