I would probably do something around Matheson, 41st, and a mid-range prospect like Logan Sawyer. That should close the gap between the two players and the position premium.

Agreed. No interest in considering extending him without seeing him perform for 40 games or so. There may be teams who will just want to sign him so will offer Calgary more, so be it.

Well he was getting slamed the last few years for his two way game, probably why a 70pts D is available. I dont dislike the guy, I just dont want to spend a lot of assets on a primary offensive dman.

He was excellent defensively last year so I'm not too concerned about that.

Ask an average Montreal fan and they'll tell you Matheson is an invaluable number 1 defenceman. Ask an average fan league-wide and they'll tell you Bouchard is the worst defenceman on Edmonton. Ask a Rangers fan and they might tell you Fox was bad this year.

I actually don't mind Matheson. He isn't a #1 and plays way too much, but at 4 mill he's valuable. Now if you want to pay Dobson 11 mill and give up Hage/picks, then I don't know what to tell you.

Good thing to keep in mind is that 11 million in 27-28, when we'll likely be starting to compete, is more like 8.5 in today's money. Pretty reasonable for a top pairing two-way D. I wouldn't necessarily give up Hage for him, but 16/17+? Sure.

Are you under the impression that the extension Suzuki signed in 2021 after a year playing as our 2C, that bought 4 RFA years in an 81.5 million cap world, would remain as the ceiling for a contract we hand out to an established top-pairing two-way RD to buy 1 RFA year in a cap world that's quickly going to rise almost 30%?

11 million at 113.5 cap is virtually identical in terms of cap% as 7.875 is at 81.5 cap.
