I see he has 1+3 in 5 games in the AHL so far.
How has he looked and how close to NHL is he?

Not under the radar with Dallas brass and fans, just stuck in a situation that won't allow him to be called up because Nill won't cut the one of the bad defenders in the NHL. At worst he gets all the minutes he can handle in the AHL and gets a shot next year when Oduya is gone and hopefully one of Oleksiak/Nemeth is as well.

Patience worked well with Klingberg so maybe it's round 2 with Julius? Wonder if he gets a taste of the NHL this season?

His skating is so smooth and he also seems to have a nice wrister. Here's some of his points so far in the season:

He always had a great motor, but looking at that highlight video he looks visually thicker and stronger on his skates. He could really make some noise in the NHL soon. Vatanen is an obvious offensive comparable, but to me Honka seems to be more well rounded and doesn't really have weaknesses like Vatanen.

Hopefully when the NHL defense gets sorted out Honka gets a call-up.

Right now the Stars like hoarders with NHL defenseman and they've been unwilling to waive any of the bad ones . The team needs another puckmover badly but as long as theres already 8D on the NHL team Honka will have to stay in the AHL .

Really hate that Oleksiak is still on the NHL roster. I mean he's not even playing but still blocks a spot ...

So Honka got called up today and is expected to debut tomorow. About damn time . Sick of so many defenseman who play or handle the puck decently . Hope he sticks with the team and Oleksiak is gets waived.

Played very well , had a couple of great plays and a really nice assist. Played 21 minutes and lead both teams with 5 SOG . Should stay up imho but who knows with Dallas.

I really liked his performance last night. He was playing it pretty safe the first half, but started taking some risks the last half. He's got a lot of similarities to Klingberg, except has a lot better defensive game and likes to utilize his slap shot on one timers. I'd really like to see them both in the line up, I just don't know how the pairings would look.

Great debut.

That breakaway pass was awesome. Was able to get shots on net from the blueline, create scoring chances and was rewarded with an assist. Makes quick decisions and smart decisions.

He's a smaller kid but has a high compete level.

I think Honka is about to break the defense logjam for us.

I've been watching him in the AHL last year and this year. While he is going to make a few bad turnovers, he’s just too talented to pass up for the likes of Nemeth, Oleksiak, and Jordie.

He’s going to force Nill’s hand here.

I watched the 3 on 3 last night. Kid looked like a superstar.

He would have looked like a superstar at 3 on 3 at 17. The question around Honka is whether his size is going to limit him to be a weak 2nd pairing/bottom pairing offensive specialist or someone who can lead a second pairing during 5 on 5 play. I guess there is a chance he could be first pairing, but my money is on him being a Shattenkirk/Krug type that can lead your second pairing on a good team.

It's ridiculous that he spent the whole season in the AHL. He should be in the NHL to start next season.

Looks like the IIHF World Championships has been Honka's coming out party to the rest of the league. He's been quite impressive.

Where does he rank in terms of already-drafted defense prospects?

He was absolutely incredible last night even though Finland lost. I don't understand why they didn't give him the "player of the game" title. His skating skills are stunning !

I agree. His skating, especially his edgework, are phenomenal. I'm biased as a Stars fan, but I really dont see a reason why he wouldn't be right up there with McAvoy and Chabot in terms of top D prospect yet to fully "break in".

They're more hyped since they're a few years younger. Honka has been going under the radar since he was drafted, I can see that changing next year.
