RD Ben Danford - Oshawa Generals, OHL (2024, 31st, TOR)

What can be said of this kid? Guess not much at all.

Don’t like this pick for the Leafs. Can skate, can pass a bit, but not much for offence. Responsible and competes hard though. But I doubt this guy turns into anything special. What is his top end? TJ Brodie?

He is a very sturdy defenseman and always finds himself in the right spot. Chris Tanev is a pretty solid comparable.

This says more about you than it does about Danford lol

A right handed Brodie that actually has size and uses it would be a dream scenario of this pick. Sign me up. Brodie was a fantastic dman for us for most of the time he was here

As others have said, drafting a Brodie quality dman and having him for his prime is pretty solid for a late 1st.

If this guy ends up as good as Brodie he would go top 15 or higher in a redraft lol. Brodie was a legit #2/3 for years.

Prime TJ Brodie was a top pair d man and at worst a #3 on a contender. What does Brodie, Muzzin, Tanev and Vlasic all have in common? All have similar draft profiles to Danford. Guys who are defense first, with limited offense but can transition the puck. What else do they all have in common? They all played top pairing minutes for their teams.

If Danford becomes anything like that, I take that every day of the week.

Some of y'all will really bite on anything
But I think it’s accurate. Not to say the pick won’t work out, but look at Kiviharju. Actually drafted in round 4. People said he could go late round 1.

After a certain point you can kind of draft anyone, and the reactions will be varying responses of we’ll find out in five years if it was a good pick or not.

Brodie didn’t have limited offense on the Flames. 30 points six seasons in a row, including two 40 point seasons and a career high of 46 points in 70 games (54 point pace). This was in an era where scoring was also lower.

Brodie also only had 30 points in his draft season in the OHL and topped out at 50 in a season. Danford had 33 this season...have to see how the rest of his career plays out.

Correct. Muzzin also had several 40+pt seasons.

I'm talking about their draft profile. Those guys didn't put up a lot of points in junior but still became top pairing d men.

Maybe the Leafs see untapped potential with Danford to produce. He skates well and moves the puck well.

So which D is going to play with Sennecke and Ritchie on PP1 next year, is it him or Marrelli? That can have a huge impact on Danford's overall production.
