Ray Shero passes away

Horrible indeed.

Picking Nico and Jack over Nolan Patrick and Kakko is reason enough to be a NJD legend. He did a great job here.
Especially when Nolan was the favorite over Nico for that draft and Kakko did great in the IIHF tournament which made the narrative about how Kakko would transition over much easier in the NHL versus Jack who would take time for his size.

Too young, thoughts go out to his family.

This got me thinking, have any coaches or GMs passed while on the job? I can't think of any which is statistically odd considering the amount of coaches/gms that have been in their 60s and 70s.

turning into a bad week for people passing away linked to the NHL in different ways

First one that came to mind was Devils assistant coach John Cunniff. After Larry Robinson was fired in January 2002, Cunniff was hired to be an assistant to new head coach Kevin Constantine. Lou hired him knowing Cunniff was undergoing cancer treatment.

But after a month, Cunniff had to depart the team to focus on the treatment (Robinson would be coaxed to replace him). Unfortunately Cunniff passed away in May 2002.

Did a little digging, and George Kennedy, the owner/GM of the Canadiens in the 1910s, died on October 19, 1921 of complications from Spanish flu, while he was still credited as being the GM. That's the only example I could find, though I only looked at GMs, and mostly looked at O6 teams because most teams newer than that, there aren't all that many potential candidates anyway.

Hits me on a personal note.

His dad, Fred Shero, coached The Buffalo Bisons in the late 60's, until 1970 -Calder Cup Cup Champs.

They lived in North Tonawanda, and Rejean - Ray, hung out with a couple of my friends.

I never met him, but I remember hearing about him through them as Freddy's son for years after, for obvious reasons.

62 is younger than me, and Fred passed at 65. Both too young.

RIP Rejean "Ray" Shero.

Millen 67, Shero 62.

I’m in my 60s also. Not enjoying this right now. But that’s not important.

Condolences to the Shero family on their loss. A great family in pro hockey for decades. I’m sure they are hurting today. RIP Ray.

As a guy in my fifties facing the impact of aging I’ll say hang in there and do what you can to take care of yourself. Eat a healthy diet get some exercise and sleep every night and visit your physician. We can’t run away from our genetics but we can at least prolong the fight.

His dad was also responsible for the best quote in pro sports history in my book. RIP Ray Shero.

Can't stress this enough. Go to your doctor, LISTEN to what they tell you and take the appropriate steps. I'm 64 and 10 years ago my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. Yeah, whatever. Ignored him and 7 years later was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes after losing 40 lbs in about 6 months. Went from 205 to 165 and 34 waist from 38. It scared the shit out of me. I believe I've got it under control, but it will never go away. That's my fault. My public service announcement of sorts.

From what I've read, Ray was privately fighting cancer behind-the-scenes. This goes to show you, once again, how important medical check-ups are. I'm only 34 and I get a physical every year. Get screened early before a potential medical situation gets un-fixable. His father also died of cancer in his 60s.

I said 'WHAT?!' so loud reading the thread title my girlfriend asked what was up.

He was so young.

RIP.
